The Blue Jays have asked the Athletics about the possibility of trading for reliever Tyler Clippard, ESPN’s Jerry Crasnick tweets. The Blue Jays are seeking upgrades for both their rotation and their bullpen, Crasnick reports. Joel Sherman of the New York Post wrote yesterday that Clippard might become a target for the Blue Jays, who were also interested in Clippard last offseason.
The Jays have gotten good results this year from Roberto Osuna, Liam Hendriks, Steve Delabar and current closer Brett Cecil, but their bullpen has been an area of concern throughout the season, and they’ve recently also had trade discussions with the Phillies regarding Jonathan Papelbon.
The 30-year-old Clippard would be a somewhat lower-wattage addition, but he’s in the midst of an effective season, with a 3.20 ERA and 7.8 K/9. His walk rate is elevated at 4.6 BB/9, however, and he’s allowed fly balls at an alarming 64.9% rate that’s somewhat atypical, even though he’s never been a ground-ball pitcher. He’s saved nine games in his first extended stint as a closer since 2012, when he saved 32 games for the Nationals. He’s making $8.3MM in his last year before free agency.
at what cost
They should just go after Chapman and Cueto……
Either that or Cole Hamels Or Paps, Although Cole does not seemed inclined approve a Trade unless more Yankee Dollars are sent his Way !
Not sure the Jays are willing to part with the pieces they’d need to trade. Norris + Sanchez maybe. Maybe more.
dude… norris and sanchez for a rental in cueto and a year of chapman? are you insane? id say Chapman, cueto and 5m cash for Hoffman is a lot more fair.
That’s not even close, and I’m a Jays fan.
Wait youre saying if you were the reds you wouldnt deal half a year of cueto and 1 year of chapman for norris and sanchez?……….. i would throw up if AA did that
Norris and Sanchez for Cueto and Chapman is more fair than your proposed deal. Your deal of Chapman and Cueto for Hoffman is ridiculous and would get whoever offered that laughed at.
You are out to lunch. Cueto by himself does not warrant a top prospect such as Norris who is as high as 17th in the entire league. He is a free agent after this season meaning he is a rental. Also Relievers do not have exceptional value. Look at the kimbrel deal, just wow. Some of you guys are absolutely out to lunch.
Clippard and Lawrie for Donaldson
Sorry not enough.
You’re right, Jays gotta add Stroman to make that deal worthwhile.
You’re dreaming, time to wake up now.
I’m pretty sure that Mark D was joking. In fact, I’m pretty sure that they were both joking.
I figured that. I also think they are both A’s fans.
On a serious note I would much rather Alex to try and get Gray instead of Clippard. If Alex was able to get Donaldson then it’s possible to get Gray as well.
This is insulting.
The A’s plunder farm systems, it’s not the other way around.
On a serious note, the Jays are not getting Gray without trading Daniel Norris ++++.
Sure I’d trade Norris for Gray straight up.
Not , Time for Jays to Pay though the Nose !
Do you understand the concept of humor?
Do you know how to read? Look 4 posts up.
You’re dreaming, time to wake up now.
Hahaha that’s the best joke I’ve heard today.
LOL, good luck with that! Billy Beane just gave him away; I doubt Toronto would do something so foolish!
He was joking.
How bout Sonny gray, Lawrie, Clippard and 10m for Donaldson and we’ll give you a bucket of baseballs as well.
Jays will be active at the deadline, they need a top starter and a closer. Clippard, Chapman, and Papebon are available, AA can’t sit on his hands this year.
Cueto and Chapman+5m to the jays for Jeff Hoffman straight up. And i really dont wanna give up Hoffman.
Still not close.
Isn’t there a problem with their budget though? I could see why they’d want to make moves, but I wonder to what extent they can without moving some money they already have on the team.
Randomly we only have about 5m left in payroll which is odd because we didnt end up getting ervin santana for 14m last year. Im wondering where that money went considering I do not believe our payroll went up this year. We still have Navarro at 5m as a trae chip as well. Rogers hopefully will be flexiable at the deadline .
Maybe Donaldson’s artibtration figure is that much higher than Lawrie’s was last year? Actually, probably arbitration in general.
A couple mil increase only from donaldson to lawrie.. and we traded adam lind, didnt resign colby rasmus, melky walked, idk man.
The A’s have 3 players for trade in Clippard, Zorbist, and Kazmir. Clippard would be the cheapest for the Jays to get. My bet is they package a few prospects and get all 3.
The jays could really use all three of them, that would really make them intimidating, even the al team to beat
That’s a lot of money for the Jays to take on just for rentals. Depending on what prospects and how much the A’s are willing to eat, it would have to be conditional to all 3 signing extensions with the Jays.
Jays would be lucky if 1 of them signs a extension before testing FA unless they over pay. If there was a condition of them signing extension their price would go way up whoever trades for them. More than the Jays would be looking to trade for them.
So it’s too much money to take on as rentals but not as long-term contracts? I don’t follow.
Want to Win, Pay the Ransom !
I dont think we really need Zobrist but kazmir and clippard would be nice.
A few Prospects and the Family farm too !
Considering what Andrew Miller cost, I would ask for Sean Reid-Foley or Miguel Castro straight up for June-October of Clippard.
Castro, a high ceiling starter for clippard? no way.
Go get Paps !
dont think we wanna pick up his option next year.
Clippard’s having nowhere close to as good of a year as Miller did last season. Get that strikeout rate up and that FIP down then talk about getting someone good.
I think I’d be more concerned with that flyball rate in Roger’s center. In that place flyballs can very easily turn into HR’s.
the jays already have a bullpen dude named goggles. can’t have two goggleses in the same pen. it would confuse buck and tabby too much
One gets called “Specs” and the other gets called “Peepers,” simple.
Boston could get real and move Koji, then it’s within the division and Koji loves Boston and vice versa.
Koji turned down a trade to Toronto on a previous occasion. Boston must keep its garbage—they don’t get another do over after getting rid of Beckett, Lackey, Crawford, Gonzalas….not this time
Garbage? You better look at the Jays closing situation, not Koji who ha been closing pretty nicely in the AL east, except for *1* month (last september) for 3y and would lock down just about any BP for a year and a half.
As for Lackey? Better get some more facts straight (once again) before babbling further nonsense.
Beane got the guy he wanted most out of the Jays org in Nolin, pretty sure he can find a richer return for Clippard somewhere else.
nolin wasnt even that highly ranked in our org?
Not saying I agree that Nolin is the only guy Beane liked from the Jays. But I think it’s pretty obvious the A’s value guys quite differently from your typical top prospect lists.
Franklin Barreto other then lawrie was the guy beane wanted.
Yep, I knew that and agree with you, but Beane loves him more than everyone for whatever reason. He sees something in him that the Jays and other scouts do not. Wish Nolin would stop getting hurt so we could see exactly what he is. So far he’s shown a bit, I think now Beane is hoping he can replace Kazmir.
Interesting.
Would love to get clippard. Would be a great addition to a improving bullpen.
Has Beane commented on the team’s buyer or seller status?
