The game is in need of greater minority representation in its most visible non-playing role, that of manager, says Jon Heyman of CBSSports.com. Heyman lists twenty excellent candidates who ought to receive strong consideration from those clubs that are in need of new dugout leaders after the season.
- It’s no secret, of course, that Reds pitchers Johnny Cueto and Aroldis Chapman would draw intense interest on the trade market if they are made available. Writing for FOX Sports, Jeff Sullivan analyzes just how much they could bring back this summer. In spite of his excellence, Cueto might most realistically be expected to bring back a very good prospect rather than a great one, says Sullivan, while Chapman probably has somewhat more value given his nearly-unmatched dominance and extra year of control. As Sullivan notes, the possibility of jointly marketing the two in search of more premium talent in less player seems interesting, though perhaps something of a long shot.
- The Twins have decided to move top-100 pitching prospect Alex Meyer into the Triple-A bullpen, as Mike Berardino of the St. Paul Pioneer-Press reports. It appears that the team is doing so more with the idea of getting him back on track than preparing him for MLB bullpen work — Meyer has struggled mightily, especially with his control — but it would not be surprising to see him appear as a late-inning arm if he can turn things around and Minnesota can stay in the hunt.
- Dodgers lefty Hyun-jin Ryu, who is set to miss the rest of the year with shoulder surgery, told reporters that he has been pitching with a labrum tear at least since he signed with the club, as J.P. Hoornstra of the Los Angeles News Group tweets. Ryu says that his MRI back in 2013 revealed the slight tear, which has not worsened — but is apparently now a much greater problem — since that time.
- Meanwhile, the Dodgers will not attempt to void the contract of infielder Erisbel Arruebarrena, Mark Saxon of ESPNLosAngeles.com tweets. While the club felt justified in suspending Arruebarrena for the entire rest of the year for disciplinary reasons, Saxon says that the still-unreported transgressions were not considered significant enough to warrant yet more drastic action.

How does something become a greater problem when it doesn’t worsen? That doesn’t make much sense unless the pain has become greater (which I’d assume would be related to the labrum tear getting worse).
stew4073
I had the same injury. The tear won’t get worse but the surrounding ligaments, bone, and muscles get taxed making up for it. Tendinitis and fatigue become an issue if the labrum is never repaired.
Derpy
Ones thing you have to realize, your bicep muscle is attached to the labrum. So every time you flex your bicep, it tugs on that labrum. The arm isn’t made up of individual parts as much as it is one big thing that’s all connected to itself in all sorts of ways. One problem can lead to a handful of others which compound in many ways, which may not be foreseeable. Trying to cheat and use the wrong muscles for each movement, changing angles to put stress on different tendons and ligaments. It is all connected, and injuries tend to spread. I believe one of the aspects of labrum surgery is cutting things off the labrum, such as the bicep, and anchoring them in other places so the labrum is more independent.

Thanks for the info Derpy! It is always very helpful!

Boras sheds a tear.. Meyer is doing awful, Ranaudo. His future pitching FA cash flow is looking bleak on the minor league front.
Jaysfan1994 2
He represents so many people I don’t think it maters if only half of his clients bust.
oh Hal
Bleak as in not quite as fantastic?
scann
Cueto too the Cubs for Baez….
Sigurd
No thanks.
Vandals Took The Handles
So you’re a Cubs fan? With that logo?
Brixton G.
Why would that be a good deal for the Reds?
User 4245925809
It’s going to be tough getting what the Cubs perceive as equtable value out of what was a top 10 prospect 1 year ago for someone with big holes in his swing and K’s 35% in the PCL, to go with BB rates at or below 5% in that same league.
scann
Red’s are going to lose Cueto anyway’s…..might as well get a legit major league talent for him….plus Baez would put up numbers at the great America launching pad…..
Sigurd
For one, the Reds have control of Cueto. We are under no obligation to rip out our heart and give it to the rich teams for nothing. We want something back. And Baez is hardly a “legit major league talent”. Hes sitting in the minor leagues for a very good reason.
Sky14
The Twins have set a really high threshold on promoting their pitching prospects despite a lackluster rotation in the Majors. I imagine Meyer is just trying too hard to make a good impression causing him to struggle. Hopefully some BP time can straighten him out as his stuff is ridiculous, but I am getting worried he will never be able to command it for long stretches.
Sigurd
Cueto is significantly better than Samardjiza and he got back Addison Russell. Cueto is very much worth a top 25 MLB prospect and some garnishes even as a rental. If not that one top 5 and top 10 team prospects and garnish. Hes as good of a bet as any to carry you through the postseason; especially for pitching starved teams with a shot.
Vandals Took The Handles
Samardjiza had an extra year of control.
Sigurd
Exactly – Cueto is significantly better than Samardjiza; half a year of Cueto = 1.5 year of Samardjiza return given the difference in their value. An Addison Russel type return seems like fair value.
Bruinsfan94
But thats not how it works. An extra year is huge. It gave the A’s a chance to trade and get some value back. Also they got another starting pitcher. This is a terrible trade to reference because:
1) A’s farm was not very strong. They could not have got him without Russal. There was no middle ground. Thats why they had to trade off the mlb roster for Lester.
2) A year and three months of Samardzjia (Cueto wont be traded until after the break) and 3 months of another decent starting pitcher is worth more then two months of Cueto.
3) The A’s are known to make very different and odd trades so its hard to put an A’s trade in any kind of context.
DavidL
While all those are good arguments it really comes down to supply and demand. If there are no other pitchers like Cueto available and several teams want him the price could be higher than Samardzjia’s was. Sure, there’s a limit to what teams are willing to offer, but it can be much higher when there’s a need.
Last year at the deadline the Orioles gave up a top 100 prospect for 20 innings of Andrew Miller because they needed a left reliever and no one like him was available. If 20 innings of Miller is worth Rodriguez Cueto could be worth much more.
Bruinsfan94
Well Cole Hameils is on the market so there’s gonna be at least two aces to be had. If Cuetos price is high then some teams are just gonna go a little bit more for Hamels whos under team control at about or slightly below market value. Other good pitchers like Kazmir could also be moved. Samardzja is a very good pitcher so a year and three months of him is worth a ton. Erods stock was on the decline before the trade and he turned a corner, plus the O’s and Red Sox rarely trade so I doubt they would have given him up for anything less then a legit prospect.
jb226 2
People love to parse the deal like Samardzija got Russell and Hammel got McKinney and Straily, but that’s not true. Neither deal happens if they’re broken apart.
The A’s got 40% of a team’s starting rotation, jumped the market a month before these trades usually go down, kept two definite trade pieces away from their competitors, took a huge gamble on bolstering their playoff odds and still had the security of dumping Samardzija for some prospects when it didn’t all work out. THAT was worth Russell to them — and, by the way, the trade was almost universally panned.
Cueto will bring back a strong return, but don’t hold your breath for a top 10 prospect.
Mark 20
You really think minnesota is world series contenders? I dont think theyll even make the playoffs…
Vandals Took The Handles
I wrote WC – Wild Card.
Mark 20
My bad.
ShaneRedsFan
I would trade Cueto and Chapman both in a package if possible. Highly unlikely a team has the pieces to warrant that though.
Sigurd
Hard to find the right suitor for that package, but we could ask the moon. A top 5 ace in all of the game with the best shutdown closer in baseball could bring back incredible pieces. Somebody would have to give up the farm. Could be worth it to the right WS bound team. Thats a hard combo to pass up.
scann
Cueto’s Definitely not an top 5 ace in all of baseball…..Give me Kershaw…Felix…Scherzer….Harvey….Gray….Greinke….all over Cueto…..
Bob Bunker
Sonny Gray over Cueto??
scann
yea…Sale…Price..Bumgarner..too….
Brixton G.
Cueto last 4 years: 2.59 ERA, 149 ERA+, 1.048 WHIP, 3.35 FIP
Bumgarner: 3.03 ERA, 115 ERA+, 1.085 WHIP, 3.21 FIP
Price: 3.07 ERA, 125 ERA+, 1.101 WHIP, 2.97 FIP
Cueto>Both of them
I’ll go Kershaw>Scherzer>Felix>Harvey>Sale>Cueto
LayerCake
You were almost right. Except Cueto > Price/Bummer. Dont let the World Series shine blind you
Bruinsfan94
I think they would get some very nice pieces but no one is giving up the farm unless it’s a weak system. Cueto won’t be traded until the last minute so that’s only two months. Chapman is great but closers don’t net huge returns.
cman
Alex Meyer struggling mightly, forcing Rochester Red Wings to move him to the bullpen at age 25. That’s Bad bad news for the Twins and Alex considering everyone was banking on him being the future ace. What a shame. At this point if Clay Aiken is still available at number 8 the Twins had BETTER draft him.
