There has been a great deal of trade talk surrounding A’s pitcher Scott Kazmir, but the Dodgers could have interest in another member of Oakland’s rotation, Bill Shaikin of the Los Angeles Times writes. The Dodgers could circle back to Jesse Chavez this summer, a right-hander they discussed with Oakland in the offseason. The Dodgers could use pitching reinforcements and the A’s own the worst record in baseball, so there could be a match there between now and the end of July.
Here’s more from the NL West:
- Some might wonder if Walt Weiss is on the hot seat given the Rockies’ woes, but GM Jeff Bridich says that’s not the case. “There’s no issue there,” Bridich said, according to Nick Groke of The Denver Post. “Throwing around blame is a very dangerous thing to do. The manager and the coaches don’t step on the field and take a bat and step into the batter’s box, and they don’t take the ball to stand on the mound.” Knowing he has the confidence of his GM, Weiss says he does not feel any heat, “This is my third season, and we haven’t won. And I’m sure people ask about my security here, I’m sure that becomes a topic. But I have to tell you, honestly, I have zero fear of losing my job.” The Rockies enter play today at 16-25, the fourth-worst mark in MLB.
- One bright spot for the Rockies this season has been the play of second baseman DJ LeMahieu, who The Denver Post’s Patrick Saunders is championing to make the NL All-Star team.
- Juan Uribe could be the odd man out when Hector Olivera is ready to join the Dodgers, according to J.P. Hoornstra of the Los Angeles News Group.
- The Dodgers’ best-pitched game of the season didn’t come from one of their high-priced top line starters or one of their multi-millionaire free agent pickups. Instead, it came from Mike Bolsinger, who was acquired from the Diamondbacks by the Dodgers’ new regime in exchange for cash considerations, Bill Plunkett of the Orange County Register writes. Â Through four starts, Bolsinger now boasts a 0.71 ERA with 7.8 K/9 and 2.1 BB/9.
- After a 10-5 start, the Padres have gone 10-18 and former U-T San Diego writer Bill Center (in a piece for MLB.com) wonders if it’s time for San Diego to act with urgency and shake up things.

The padres shaking things up? When pigs fly, maybe
Brixton G.
The Rockies need to trade hitting for pitching. They aren’t gonna win without pitching, and right now, they don’t have any. None of their starting pitchers have even remotely decent numbers. Tyler Matzek has the lowest ERA (4.09) but averages 8 walks per 9 innings.
Pete Harnisch
Yes. Trade hitters at their peak, no matter who it is. Morneau and Stubbs should have been traded last offseason.
And the notion Weiss is on the hot seat is ridiculous. Once you’re in with the Rockies, you’re in (as long as you don’t care about winning). O’dowd was offered an extension before resigning for Christ sake.

Excellent Point !
Steven Garrison
the only teams that have the pitching the rockies would want is the mets with syndergard and matz and I don’t see them making trades, If the mets were going to make a trade for a short stop they might go ask the cubs about castro

Dodgers got rid of Kemp for a reason, Upton in Philly or New York pinstripes next Year .
Brixton G.
Upton in Philly makes sense. The Yankees top position prospect is a right fielder, plus they already have Ellsbury, Gardner, Beltran and Heathcott. They don’t need Upton.
Dodgers got rid of Kemp because they had Pederson
scann
They need Upton bating 3rd everyday….position prospects won’t hold them back….
Draven Moss
Yes, it will. This is the new Yankees, not the old one.
Steven Garrison
I saw on an old article somebody said the angels should sign upton next year to play left, but what will happen if the angels trade for revere
Tommets
What will Uribe or Kendrick cost?
Steven Garrison
I have Kendrick going to the nationals

Yankees next year.
Steven Garrison
I don’t think so, I have the yankees getting desmond only

The Padres just shook up the whole off-season. Did anyone actually think this team would work? Using the Blue Jays and Marlins as recent examples, the odds arent in your favor to put together a mish mash team and expect them to contend.
Mark D
The A’s did that every year from 2012-2014 and made the playoffs every year.
Mark D
A’s aren’t selling until Zobrist & Doolittle come back, they aren’t out of it yet – its May and they have a lot of talent, although I think Kazmir could be traded for a LF to help in 2015 as Crisp, Fuld & Gentry all look done as MLB hitters and Graveman, Nolin & Pomeranz all look fit to join Gray & Chavez in the rotation, so Kazmir could be traded to help the team actually contend. Kazmir and a low level prospect for Scott Van Slyke could be very beneficial to both teams.
Steven Garrison
I’m writing off the a’s for this year, If they really wanted to shake things up could trade sonny gray but I doubt that will happen
Mark D
Plenty of teams have been 10 games out of a playoff position on May 24 and made it in there, very early to write them off.
And if Gray gets traded to LA its for Pederson, Seager & Urias aka never happening. He’s having a Cy Young level season and is very cheap for a while.
Steven Garrison
He is having a great year so far but they don’t have the offense weapons like they did last year, no donaldson , no moss and no cespedes. But gray did get hurt today
Mark D
X-rays came back negative, he won’t miss a start.
And the A’s offense last year was 3rd in runs scored in the AL. Currently the A’s are…3rd in runs scored in the AL.

Is Grey better than Cole ” Hollywood ” Hamels, I don’t think so ! The Dodger are desperately trying to hold to Seager and Urias but it’s going to difficult in their present pitching situation.
Steven Garrison
If the dodgers were going to make a move for a pitcher , Hamels would be a great choice, battle tested and can pitch deep into games. Gray is also a good pitcher and is young and cost control for another 4 years, but will the dodgers pony up and trade 1 of those 2 to get the deal started.
