The Phillies have indeed been talking about a deal involving outfielder Ben Revere with the Angels, MLB.com’s Todd Zolecki reports. With Philadelphia moving Cody Asche to a corner role and presumably prepared to give Domonic Brown another shot at the big league level, Revere figures to find himself without a role. Revere is earning a relatively steep $4.1MM salary in 2014 and will be eligible to be tendered arbitration contracts each of the next two seasons.
A bit more from the NL East…
- Commissioner Rob Manfred left little doubt where he stands on the still-pending legal dispute between the Nationals and Orioles regarding television fees, as Eric Fisher of the Sports Business Journal reports (Twitter links). “Sooner or later MASN is going to be required to pay those rights fees,” said Manfred of the increased payouts awarded to the Nationals by the league’s Revenue Sharing Decisions Committee. Technically, the Mid-Atlantic Sports Network is the plaintiff in the lawsuit; it is jointly owned by both clubs but controlled by Baltimore, which holds a majority share. That validity of that panel’s decision is the immediate matter at issue in the suit.
- Danny Espinosa has been a pleasant surprise for the Nationals, but his turnaround is due more to a lack of trying too hard than to any intentional adjustments, as James Wagner of the Washington Post writes. While Espinosa spent the spring hitting exclusively from the right side of the plate, he returned to a switch-hitting approach during the season and has suddenly thrived from the left side. The 28-year-old middle infielder is playing on a $1.8MM contract this year, and can be controlled for two more years via arbitration. Washington gained an extra season of arb control when it demoted him early in 2013. Espinosa has long been talked about as a trade candidate, but with Anthony Rendon injured and Ian Desmond struggling in his final contract year, that increasingly seems unlikely — despite the fact that Espinosa’s value is higher now than it has been in some time.

Revere for Trout’s batting gloves. Fair trade.
flyerzfan12
Pass. I’ll counter with Revere for 5 batting lessons from Trout given to the Phillies farm system.

Pull the trigger Amaro! Don’t be finicky with the return. Opening a roster spot for Asche or Brown is way more important than the return you get at this point in time.

I wonder what the Angels would have to give up to acquire Revere?
calicub
Revere is earning a relatively steep $4.1MM salary in 2014*
It’s 2015* right?
cuscus85
It’s THAT steep, last years salary still being talked about

I feel like I read before that Espinosa is a pretty good defensive SS. If so, I wonder if the Nats would put Desmond on the trading block this summer when Rendon returns.
Desmond to the padres for Benoit and prospects.
Rally Weimaraner
Angels top prospects are:
LHP Andrew Heaney- off limits for Revere
LHP Sean Newcomb- off limits for Revere
RHP Joe Gatto
RHP Chris Ellis
RHP Nick Tropeano- off limits for Revere
3B Kyle Kubitza- off limits for Revere
RHP Cam Bedrosian
2B Taylor Featherston
SS Roberto Baldoquin- off limits for Revere
RHP Trevor Gott
I’m not sure how easy it will be to put a deal together with what is left.

Gatto plus Ellis or a combo of Gatto, Bedrosian and another spec would suffice.

Gatto has tremendous upside, but he needs a lot of work. He’s young though, I’d roll the dice if I’m Rube. Getting Gallo and Bedrosian would be a no-brainer, the benefit is just getting the roster of outfielders some semblance with the ability to assess who has a future with the club. If I’m Rube, Gatto and Bedrosian, done deal. Revere is what he is, he plays hard and could have some value on the right squad, but he’s run his course in Philly. I’m ready to see what Asche could offer in left (don’t have very high expectations, but we’ll see). And get Dom back to see what he could do…..not sure if anybody would want to give anything up for Sizemore, so they just may need to DFA him, though he’s been playing fairly well lately.
alex navarrette
Gatto and Ellis? That’s a lot of upside for a guy with minimal upside. Bedrosian seems to be getting his command under control and he’s a legitimate closing prospect. Revere isn’t going to get anyone with top end upside.
MattHollidaysForearms
Ya this whole talk about Ben Revere getting a legitimate return has been bizarre.
alex navarrette
He’s probably going to cost a back end top 20 prospect.
MattHollidaysForearms
Organizational top-20.. Just to be clear. lol I’m sure there are some that think you mean league wide.
alex navarrette
Haha, yeah. I didn’t even think I needed to be that explicit, but you’re probably right.
rouscher
He won’t break the bank in terms of prospects at all.
alex navarrette
I’d be surprised if we gave up more than Nate Smith or Rucinski at this point. Another guy they’d want would be Jett Bandy, but I’d be hesitant to give him up only for Revere.
alex navarrette
I think Nataniel Delgado is a better prospect than Featherston.
BiglerStreet
Let’s get the entire Bedrosian family in red pinstripes.
cuscus85
For Revere earning $4.1 million, I think trading either Morin or Bedrosian straight up.
Bedrosian is major league ready but we have a lot of relievers in the pipeline already.
Trading Morin would give a spot to Bedrosian on the MLB club.
I prefer trading Bedrosian over Morin.
DavidL
I’m not sure the Phillies will think a relief pitcher with a 6.43 ERA or a 26 year old pitcher with an 8.33 ERA would be much of a return. The consensus here seems to be the Angels should be able to get Revere for someone they have no use for. Sounds like a great deal for the Angels.
MattHollidaysForearms
Ya the Phillies should be aiming for players who have a chance to be an impact talent. Trading for relievers doesn’t really accomplish that.
Shaungbd
Can someone break down the whole tv deal easy and quickly, don’t understand what’s going on

As part of the deal with MLB and the Orioles for the Expos to move into the exclusive territory of the Orioles there was an agreement for the establishment of a regional sports network MASN to broadcast both teams games. As part of the creation of the network the Nationals were to get a 10% stake with that increasing 1% a year until it reached 33%. Additionally the network was to pay each team the exact same rights fee which was to be set every 5 years using a predetermined formula. If there was a disagreement it was to go to an MLB arbitration panel to settle the disagreement. The panel is made of 3 owners who have a vested interest in a larger rights fee since that is subject to revenue sharing and they ruled a higher number than MASN determined using the agreed upon formula. The Orioles argument is that the panel deviated from the contractual formula and made up an alternate one of their own to justify the higher rights fee which was larger than MASN determined but lower than what the Nationals asked for.

Thanks I understand now
Luis
Please do not trade him for pitchers with ERA’s over 5. I just know somehow Ruben is going to screw this up. Revere plays hard steals a bunch of bases. He has value in the right team. I might be interested in Gott but just not Gott alone. As the other poster eluded to it might be hard to pull a trade. As I doubt the Angels will part with any of the players he highlighted to. The rest are a bunch of C prospect. Revere salary isnt that steep
