Here are a few highlights from Nick Cafardo of the Boston Globe’s latest rumors roundup:
- The Phillies have scouted the Red Sox’ Double-A Portland team the past six days, Cafardo writes. The Red Sox have, of course, repeatedly been connected to Cole Hamels, although the Phillies have several other veterans who could also be trade candidates. Portland isn’t a particularly prospect-rich team right now, with many of the Red Sox’ best minor-leaguers at Triple-A Pawtucket or Class A Greenville. So it’s hard to say who the Phillies might be scouting, and it’s likely they aren’t scouting a potential centerpiece for a Hamels deal.
- The Brewers are already prepared to trade starters Matt Garza and Kyle Lohse. At least one scout tells Cafardo that Lohse (who has allowed ten homers in his first 47 2/3 innings this season, although his strikeout and walk numbers have been fine) is in need of a “change of scenery.”
- The Royals’ bullpen this year has been terrific, but their rotation hasn’t. The Royals are looking for cheap starting pitching to help ease the burden on their bullpen caused by short outings from their starters (although any acquisition they might make right now would likely be minor, since they aren’t yet willing to trade for a starter).
- Teams could see Reds starter Mike Leake as a very viable trade candidate. Leake is having a strong season so far, and it would likely be easier to sign him long-term than to sign his rotation-mate Johnny Cueto, so Leake could attract plenty of interest. Like Cueto, he’s eligible for free agency after the season.
- If the Marlins’ season doesn’t improve, they could easily trade Dan Haren to a team on his preferred coast, Cafardo writes. Haren’s desire to play in California is well known. He’s in the midst of a good season (3.70 ERA, 6.1 K/9, 1.7 BB/9), and any number of teams out west could have interest.
Vandals Took The Handles
Royals bullpen is the best – and deepest – in MLB. But their starters seem incapable of pitching into even the 6th inning, and it’s burning the bullpen guys out.
Steven Garrison
that is where the loss of shields comes into play but the offense is on fire at the moment.
Christian camlin
Shields replacement Volquez has been better than Shields so far.Losing Shields has not been why Ventura, Duffy And Guthrie have gotten off to such poor starts.Nor does it explain Vargas trip to the DL.
Steven Garrison
I mean the leadership shields brought, If he was still there all those things with Ventura wouldn’t of happened
Christian camlin
The Royals starting pitching is not as bad as it appears.Shields replacement Volquez has been better than Shields.Chris Young has been lights out as well. The oddity is that both Ventura and Duffy who were among the leagues best last year have temporarily forgotten how to pitch. That will not last as they both still have great stuff and a phenomenal game caller in Salvador Perez. Both should turn things around before June or 1 of them will be replaced by Kris Medlen when he is ready.and in AAA the Royals have John Lamb pitching like the ace he was before his Tommy John surgery in 2011.Lamb is still just a kid and won’t be 25 for another 2 months yet.A 2.89 ERA in the hitter friendly Pacific Coast League suggests that he is probably ready now but if not it he should be soon. And of course Guthrie managed a quality start his last time out.Point is the death of the Royals rotation has been greatly exaggerated and they have several options if some of these guys do not return to form.
Matt Dunn
Who would be in Portland that they would have interest in?
willi
Nobody , according to Philly sport writers.
Kevin Yeuan
Carlos Asuaje. The #25 prospect of their minor league system
Steven Garrison
I am counting out the red sox for hamels, I see them making a move for Cueto. Hamels I have going to the dodgers or cubs
Matt Dunn
I see Hamels going to the Astros really, I think the Phillies would be dumb to say no to McCullers/Santana/Feliz.
Steven Garrison
I don’t see that happening, the astros are off to a nice start but they are not ready to be true contenders.
Matt Dunn
Why not? Hamels fills a veteran leadership role for years to come while Feliz and McCullers would be replaced by his experience. They still have Vazquez and Appel to groom for future rotation spots and have a young core to build around.
Steven Garrison
Its crazy that the astros have a few pieces that use to belong in the phillies system
willi
Hamels put them over the Top ! Just not in the playoffs but in the final Four.
4ester
If no money changes hands, how about Phils eat $20 million and Phillips gets added, I’d prefer Phillips over Santana, but that’s just me.
Out of place Met fan
To the Cubs for Baez, Castillo, & Mejia
Steven Garrison
I think the phillies would ask for Schwarber
Out of place Met fan
They would and will be rebuffed, which is where Castillo comes in, a viable replacement to Ruiz
dylanp5030
Castillo isn’t the type of player that Phillies will be looking for. He’s a backup catcher who’s almost 30. Yeah, no thanks. Phillies would ask for Russell, and when Cubs say no (like they should) I don’t think it goes any further.
dylanp5030
Also, the Cubs are going to have to give up a couple top 10 prospects to even get them thinking about making the deal. Those three are not in that conversation.
Out of place Met fan
So Baez went from consensus top 10 prospect in baseball to no where with 150 PA? Also Mejia is impressive look further than just the “rankings”
Castillo may be a back up on the Cubs, but he is among the top 30 C in baseball
dylanp5030
He’s not a top 10 because of service time. If Ruben trades Cole Hamels for a guy that is a top 30 catcher, a prospect in which scouts have serious concerns over, and a guy that isn’t in top 20 that has close to a 6 ERA he should be fired on the spot.
Baez could be a part of the package, but the other two would not be.
willi
Agreed !
theo in 2016
almora, vogelbach, pierce johnson, gleybar torres, and wellington castillo for hamels and papelbon. if the phillies eat some money take castillo out and include a fringe prospect like mark zagunis.
DavidL
Some day someone will propose a deal here that includes players who might actually fill Phillies’ needs instead of those the other team doesn’t want.
rouscher
I’d rather go Schwarber, McKinney and Underwood.
Out of place Met fan
I think anyone would, though Schwarber is probably off the table. McKinney would be a nice piece
Sleeper
It’s pretty hard to count them out, it’s not as if anything has changed since they were initially linked to the trade, other than them seeing how their current rotation is panning out, and there being more suitors for his services, which was bound to happen anyways. It’s just been talked about for so long by everyone,it’s really a non story and makes it easier to imagine him going somewhere else.
Steven Garrison
if they are not giving up swihart or betts then it’s not going happen, I see boston making a package for cueto
dylanp5030
I disagree here. Devers and Margot would be interesting enough to get the ball rolling.
Matt Dunn
I would prefer to keep Margot at this point and offer up Devers, Owens, and less prospects like Marerro/Escobar/Mercedes
dylanp5030
I think Ruben’s stance would be one of Betts/Swihart/Boegarts OR all of Margot/Owens/Devers. Obviously I have no idea how he thinks, but I think if he’s not getting one of the top 4 (including Moncada), then he’s going to want three in the 5-10 range.
Ray Mulligan
Philly doesn’t like Owens at all. More likely they would insist on Rodriguez in that deal.
willi
What Rube wants and want he needs to keep his Job is going to be the deciding factor . He has too get a really Good Package of 3 or 4 of Boston’s top Six. I can see Harang throw in to sweeten the pot.
Steven Garrison
Actaully I think the Cards take a chance on Harang or Kazmir
Rocco Moffo
owens stinks and its already reported Phillies have no interest in owens. Phillies wont move hamels without one or the other betts or swifhart, plain and simple. we don’t want the overated other prospects boston has, simple and true
willi
Cueto for 4 months for “TOP ” prospect , that makes sense !
B-Strong
I think they’re going to stick with Betts, but considering they have a small amount of depth at Catcher after this year with Vazquez, Hannigan, and Leon, I’d wouldn’t count a Swihart deal out if both sides can come away feeling fairly content with the terms.
flyerzfan12
I think a deal headlined by Margot and ERod would definitely be a deal that could be made. As much as I’d love Swihart or Betts, I don’t see that happening. Margot, ERod, plus 1-2 lower prospects could get it done.
Steven Garrison
I don’t think the red sox give up all that for hamels honestly, I think they fix both getting an ace and getting a closer, Chapman and cueto make more sense for them imo. But only if their offense comes alive
flyerzfan12
If they think that’s too much, then I don’t see them making any deal. A Cueto rental/Chapman combo would probably cost the same if not more than that. Could always add Paps back into the deal since he still feels like a Red Sock anyway.
Edit: Plus it allows Boston to hold on to Betts, Swihart, Castillo, Moncada, and Owens. They keep arguably their top 5 “prospects” (don’t know if Betts is considered one anymore). All other players should definitely be on the table for Hamels, Cueto/Chapman, etc depending on the combination.
rouscher
Them looking at Portland is probably a piece for Papelbon or Harang. There’s nothing Hamels worthy there.
B-Strong
I doubt Boston will be going after Harang. I wouldn’t mind something being put together for Papelbon, as even though it would be kind of a heart strings tug to see Koji traded off, he’s a two pitch closer that’s over 40. Even though he’s done well so far, I’m just waiting for the dip to start.
Steven Garrison
I think Harang will be with the cards
Matt Dunn
Most Red Sox fans (and front office staff) know that Hamels is worth a decent amount, the argument is that Hamels doesn’t fix all the problems the Red Sox have, therefore he isn’t worth a potential franchise cornerstone for years to come. If you find a way to trade for Hamels and Harang, then you are wildly improving the Red Sox rotation over just Hamels, but the Sox clearly don’t care enough for those two.
Steven Garrison
I just don’t see Hamels going to boston, He will get lit up there and I really don’t see the red sox giving up betts or swihart as the main piece, then that would lead to e-rod or owens as the main guy then others. All I know is that Amaro wants a catcher in return
Kevin Yeuan
the Phillies might be scouting Carlos Asuaje for a future replacement for C. Hernandez at third base.
dylanp5030
Franco is their 3B…
BusterMaloney
Maikel Franco is their 3B now. He has been a Top 50 prospect in the past and actually hit his first MLB HR and 3B today

About possible destinations for Colorado shortstop Troy Tulowitzki, Boston Globe columnist Nick Cafardo wrote: “The Mariners appear to be a fit. They’ve got Brad Miller and Chris Taylor at shortstop. Enough said.”
I assume Cafardo wrote that snub before Miller torched Red Sox pitching for three home runs in less than 24 hours.
Cafardo also wrote: “The Red Sox probably wouldn’t dip their toes into the Tulowitzki hunt with their commitment to Xander Bogaerts at shortstop.”
Bogaerts is three years younger than Miller and probably has more room for growth. Each shortstop remains under team control for four more seasons. One can debate whether Bogaerts in his age 22-26 seasons is worth more than Miller in his age 25-29 seasons. Bogaerts’ team control may be pre-peak (or not) while Miller spans typical peak seasons.
Going into Sunday’s game, Bogaerts had been valued at 0.2 fWAR and 0.7 bWAR in 34 games this season while Miller had been valued at 0.9 fWAR and 1.2 bWAR in 34 games. For their careers, Bogaerts has been valued at 0.8 fWAR in 196 MLB games while Miller has been valued at 4.2 fWAR in 233 games.
Robert_Risteen
Mariners dont have the pitching to give colorado unless they want double a and single a kids.
Steven Garrison
They don’t but they have Paxton and Walker but they are untouchable I guess
Robert_Risteen
Seattle can not afford to trade Walker or Paxton.
blueblood1217
I wouldn’t mind seeing Dan Haren going back to the Dodgers. He sure as hell could help out the rotation.
kirkdavenport
I liked him as the 5th starter for the Dodgers but they must have known something about him to unload him on Miami and also pay his salary. It would be really odd if he got traded to the Giants and the Dodgers were paying him be on the other side of that rivalry.
caughtredhanded
I think the reds should hang on to Leake and try to resign the guy. I just don’t see them getting enough return for him. He’s a solid back of the rotation guy, but I don’t see a team giving up much to get him.
