With the would-be merger between Comcast and Time Warner Cable seemingly on the ropes, the Dodgers’ TV blackout troubles may be prolonged, as Bill Shaikin of the Los Angeles Times explains. Analysts see plenty of uncertainty in the situation at present, meaning that many of the club’s fans remain unable to watch games in their homes. It remains unclear precisely when and how the problem will impact the Dodgers, but it obviously does not help to have the club’s cable provider piling up losses while fans are left unable to consume the organization’s product in one of its key forms.
Here’s more from the National League:
- Dodgers utilityman Alex Guerrero has been on quite the streak at the plate, complicating the team’s playing time situation in a good way. As Dylan Hernandez of the Los Angeles Times reports, skipper Don Mattingly says that the club is taking the long view in constructing its roster and distributing plate appearances. “We’re just a better club the way we are,” Mattingly said. “And we’ll see. We’re not going to be hard-headed to the point where we’re going to say, ’This is what we said we’re going to do and we’re going to stay with it.’ You make decisions based on where you’re at, where you’re going.” Noting that Justin Turner also warrants more action based on his outstanding 2014, Mattingly explained: “J.T. hits .340 last year, leads the league in hitting, basically. Now, because he’s not the flavor of the day, we start talking about somebody else. That’s where we can’t get involved with what happened over a 10-day period. We have to make decisions based on long term and what we see and project, but also with the fact that things change. Not discounting Alex, but you still have a full roster we know we’ll use over the course of the season.” Of course, it bears noting that the team is still overflowing with quality infield options — even before Hector Olivera comes stateside — and Guerrero is an increasingly interesting trade target.
- The Brewers have put a quality product on the field fairly consistently for some time now, even if the post-season appearances have been less frequent than might be hoped for. But the club’s brutal start to 2015 could be cause to pursue more dramatic roster turnover, as Jon Heyman of CBSSports.com writes. GM Doug Melvin seemingly acknowledged that possibility: “It’s good we have 140 some games left. But we’ve got to see change here. We’ve got to see the arrow pointing in the other direction pretty soon,” he said. “Maybe there’s a point you have to say, you have to reset, retool.”

Where’s Guerrero’s detractors now? Who cares about defense when you’re slugging like Alex.

Mattingly is killing my fantasy swag

Guerrero is another Logan White vindication.
While we now have a dramatically better GM Logan White was always the true source of the team success and now the Padres have him.

Plus a large set in the role player category and a few who were in the top 100 prospects but busted.
He drafted Goldschmidt and Price but neither signed.
If you see the drafts from his beginning tenure [2002 the draft that was voted the best according to MLBTR readers] to the point McCourt got cheap, and starting again with Guggenheim, he did a huge job.

Umm, you realize it’s been two weeks, right?
Portland Micro-Brewers
You’re right. He’s had an OPS over .900 from Cuba to Albuquerque but I’d expect his luck to run out. I’m not buying his 1.661 OPS to hold up over a full 162. .474 BA & .333 BABIP and a HR off Bumgarner in SF just reek of someone who can’t cut it in the majors.
David Coonce
Players who have homered off Madison Bumgarner in the majors: Kevin Kouzmanoff, Yorvit Torrealba, Darnell McDonald, Jhonatan Solano, Jeff Mathis, Clint Barmes.

Not just 2 weeks. A mere 19 at bats. Good luck with that

They’re waiting for Alex to make his first error so they can say, we told you he can’t play defense. At the same time those detractors have forgotten that, in baseball. The team that scores more runs than the other…wins the game. Meanwhile, the Dodgers are becoming the nu-age Cubs.
David Coonce
Errors are a pretty lousy way to evaluate defense, especially with all the information we have now. If Guerrero was a good defensive player he’d be playing somewhere regularly.
BlueSkyLA
I’m not defending errors, but in truth the defensive metrics currently being touted are no better at answering the question. The main reason Guerrero isn’t playing regularly is the Dodgers’s roster. The other is he spent his first season at triple-A where his conversion from SS to another infield position was cut short when Miquel Olivo bit off his ear.
David Coonce
There’s mountains of evidence, in the minors and majors and from scouts and front-office types that Guerrero caan’t play infield defense anywhere. It looks like he may be able to hit enough to hold down a utility role (Turner’s no great shakes defensively either) but Guerrero may be destined for left field or DH – in another organization, maybe?
BlueSkyLA
Where are these mountains, exactly? He played position only briefly in the minors, and that was a new position assignment that wasn’t completed when he was DL’d by Olivio. He was a SS in Cuba, not exactly the least challenging infield position.
David Coonce
I guess just reading lots of scouting reports and minor league defensive metrics, plus the fact that LA won’t play him in the infield regularly and are actually considering extending Kendrick…seems to be a lot of evidence. Hey, he can hit it looks like. He can’t be traded or sent down; he’s a better player than I thought he would be, but nobody in his own organization seems to want him to play anywhere. Maybe he’s the new Tony Phillips.
BlueSkyLA
Even those who like defensive metrics will agree that they have to be averaged out over years to be at all meaningful (though to me this strongly suggests that they are reporting mostly noise). Of course they are considering extending Kendrick, he’s a great all-around player with years left to play, but it hasn’t happened yet. The way he can hit for sure Guerrero will get more playing time and then we will see.
David Coonce
You’re definitely right about the metrics; I shouldn’t have brought those up. I think the fact that his own team doesn’t want him playing in the field is fairly telling, and it’s not like Crawford is a great left-fielder anymore. In Guerrero’s case, i do trust the scouts and his own organization’s evaluation of his defense.
BlueSkyLA
I really am not understanding where you get the idea that they don’t want him playing in the field. We are not even three weeks into his first season and we know where he is in the depth chart at 3B, behind Uribe and Turner. If he was a disaster defensively he would never have been playing SS in Cuba. How he fares here, it is just too soon to say, but for sure it’s going to depend on his opportunities. As for Crawford, I don’t have a problem with him defensively. Last season he really started to get his speed back, and that was always his best tool defensively (since he never really did have any arm).
David Coonce
I have no idea how Cuban defensive stats translate here; I just know that I haven’t read anything positive about his defense anywhere. I’m sure if he keeps hitting he’ll work his way into the lineup somewhere
Fallito
The only fact right now is he is climbing in the depth chart of the Dodgers. if you were not aware, he got the last bench spot in spring training in a tight race Kike Hernandez. He is our 6th outfielder and our 6th infielder. Already he is the first pinch hit option for Mattingly above Scott van Slyke. This team is stockpyling talent because they want to win it all. He is part of the plan. He will be playing more and more, even more if Juanito continues regressing…
David Coonce
He got the last bench spot because the Dodgers couldn’t send him down, actually. Turns out to be a good move though, at least so far.
The Ring Empire
Random but did anyone watch the White Sox-Royals brawl? Anyone have any idea of why Ventura is yelling at Eaton for grounding out to him. Really don’t like the guy
MB923
Just saw it. Sooner or later he might become more hated than A-Rod (okay that’s a stretch, but still).
Sleeper
Gonna wait for a thread post here to fully express my thoughts on this, but in a nutshell:enough is enough already.
David Coonce
Yeah, I couldn’t figure that out. But if the Royals keep throwing 100 MPH fastballs behind players’ heads somebody is going to really get hurt. I understand Ventura is very young and excitable but there was literally zero reason for him to yell at Eaton while he was throwing him out on a routine grounder. The Commissioner really needs to shut this down now; a long suspension for Ventura – 6 or 8 games and a suspension for Yost seem like a reasonable response right now.
Vandals Took The Handles
Still waiting for the stories to come out – but both teams were yelling at one another all game long. It was not just Ventura. Royals batters have been used for target practice all year, not just by the Sox and A’s.
David Coonce
Ventura has gotten into verbal/physical altercations with other players in each of his three starts this year, which suggests to me he needs to tone it down a bit. He’s young, and he admitted as much in his post-game interview last night, but there’s no reason to yell at a guy you just got on an easy groundout.
stl_cards16
Another reason I like the NL. You think Ventura would be such a tough guy if he had to step into the batters box? Not a chance.
Mexican-American Martian
I have to say, I respect the fact you stay up to date with your rivals in the NL and actively post on their articles. That shows due diligence on your part to make sure your team is keeping up to date with the trends in the league.
Tim 21
The story alludes to Guerrero being an interesting trade target. However, his contract zaps any potential trade value. He can become a free agent if he is traded or optioned to the minors. I would surmise that would drive down any potential return the Dodgers would see as adequate.
Montu Masters
If a team needed a slugging infielder and offered to give him a 4 year deal, he’d approve a trade in a minute. Unfortunately, the CBA doesn’t allow “sign & trade” deals, so they’d have to do the negotiations “behind the scenes”. And although it’s true that his 1.661 OPS won’t hold up for 162 games…..I think he’s shown that he can hit MLB pitching well enough already. If his last name was Bryant……..well, let’s just say that “if Guerrero gets a full time gig soon, Kris Bryant just might not win ROY in 2015″…..
Tim 21
I just don’t see la giving away a player that has the rare ability to hit the ball outta the park. Sometimes a player comes outta nowhere. I agree that Alex could be a monster but there is evidence to suggest that this start is no fluke. He has an unreal ability to make contact and last year he had a 17% k rate. That’s absurd for any player let alone one spending his first season in a new country. Whatever adjustments he made this winter seem to have improved his defense as well. Donny B gonna have to suck it up and at least see what they have here.
Adam 18
You don’t see la giving away a rare ability to hit the ball out of the park?? Well my friend does Matt kemp ring a bell.
Tim 21
Kemp had an albatross contract and a young stud in Joc ready for a shot. Neither apply to Guerrero.
David Coonce
I kind of love that Mattingly actually said that Justin Turner “led the league in hitting, basically”….except for that pesky plate appearances qualifier, which he came over a hundred plate appearances short of reaching.
Tim 21
Exactly! They know JT is a bench player. They do not know if Guerrero is, no one does. Mattingly just wants to talk up HIS guys.
