Some within the industry believe the Nationals should trade for Jonathan Papelbon and install Drew Storen as the setup man, says Ken Rosenthal with FOX Sports (video link). While there is some concern over Papelbon’s velocity, he’s off to a great start and “never misses his spots.” His $13MM vesting option for 2016 remains an obstacle. Rosenthal notes that the Tigers and Blue Jays are other possible destinations. I agree that these three clubs could all use relief help. To me, it makes more sense for the Nationals to address their bullpen at the trade deadline. The Blue Jays have a tougher path to the postseason, so they could really use the reinforcements now. Here’s more from Rosenthal.
- The Brewers may shift to a rebuilding stance, and teams are in constant contact about Carlos Gomez and Jean Segura. Another star, Ryan Braun, will be difficult to trade. He’s slumped to start the season. He’s owed $105MM through 2020, and his no trade clause includes every team by the Angels, Dodgers, Nationals, Rays, and Marlins.
- Yankees GM Brian Cashman credits his analytics department for recommending Chris Young. The outfielder is off to a blazing start with four home runs and a .357/.426/.762 line in 48 plate appearances. The Yankees have become familiar with buying low. They also acquired Chris Capuano, Martin Prado, and Brandon McCarthy at discount prices.
- The Marlins are en route to their fourth consecutive victory, but manager Mike Redmond may remain on the hot seat. As one insider told Rosenthal, once owner Jeffrey Loria gets an idea in his head, “he can’t let it go.” If that’s the case, Redmond will need his team to go on an impressive streak.

Is this the first we’re hearing the details of Braun’s NTC? I didn’t know those were the teams not on his list. Out of them, basically, the Nationals might be a fit, and they’d probably want us eating a lot of the contract. I doubt we’ll see Braun traded anytime soon, as much as I’d like it to happen.
Steven Garrison
Gomez and Segura would bring a lot back for the brewers, I didn’t like it when the angels trade Segura in the greinke trade.
BenRoethig
The NTC might be the least of the Brewers problems right now. He’s signed for 5 more seasons after this and he hasn’t been the same player since coming back. He needs to get hot and prove his all-star/MVP status didn’t come from PEDs before anyone is going to touch him.
Steven Garrison
I don’t think the phillies would do an intra division trade
Sleeper
Eh, to be honest, I don’t think that would be too big of a factor if the return on the deal suited their needs well enough, considering they’re a bit off from returning to true contention again anyways.
Steven Garrison
With the slow start of the nationals right now, takes me back to 2013 when they didn’t get off to a great start, and the braves ran away with the division, The mets could do the same but I highly doubt that happens
Bill 21
If Phillies were not going to give Pap to the Brewers for next to nothing, they certainly wouldn’t do it for Nats. It might be the Nats who balk at giving up prospects to Phils.
Brad Johnson
I can’t see that being an issue. The club doesn’t plan to contend anytime in the next couple seasons. The Nationals are more likely to regret a trade if it involves somebody who eventually competes against them.
LazerTown
intra division trade is good move in this scenario. It’s only a problem if you plan on contending in the short term. If you don’t you are taking prospects away from your rival that would help them in a few years, and making your team worse now when you are out of it.
fred-3
I could see one of the metric influenced GMs go after Mike Fiers instead of Cueto, Hamels. Fiers pitched a bit over his head last year, but he’d be a solid #3 for a few contenders, like a better version of Shaun Marcum in his prime. He’ll cost much less, that’s for sure.
Bradley Maravalli
Yankees should do more in buying low. Seems to work out for them more than their big contracts for players like Carlos Beltran and others.
Pinstriped Empire
Very true. People forget the Yankees are the ones who resurrected Bartolo Colon’s career, when no one else wanted him. Colon and Freddy Garcia both held down the #4 and #5 spot of the rotation and we made the Playoffs.
Pinstriped Empire
Time for the Yankees to part ways with CC Sabathia.
Send him down to AAA, DFA him. No one will claim him.
Call up a prospect. Bryan Mitchell or Chase Whitley.
CC was a horse from 2009-2012. He’s no longer the same.
Bradley Maravalli
CC Sabathia has a 3.93 FIP and a 3.20 xFIP. He’ll bounceback.
Sleeper
That’s not going to happen, there’s almost zero chance. He’s owed too much money and unless he decides to hang it up early, he’s going to be on the team. Besides, I don’t think he’s entirely cooked yet, despite issues he’s had this year so far. His secondary stuff is still moving nicely, he just needs to stop trying to challenge batters with an elevated FB and work around the knees because he doesn’t have power stuff anymore.
David Coonce
He can’t be sent to triple-A. If he’s DFA’d the Yanks would have to eat, what, 75 million dollars to release him? It’s a bummer, because he was so good in his prime but was overworked so severely. It looks like coming into camp 30 pounds overweight hasn’t helped him at all.
Jaysfan1994 2
The Jays could use any veteran in that bullpen right now. Ozuna and Castro end up pitching every night because of the lack of ability and depth the team currently has. 3 blown saves in 7 opportunities is horrendous.
stymeedone
I truly believe these writers can’t come up with any actual news because its so early in the season. Teams are still seeing what they have in-house. So they trot out any rumor from the offseason and start making making things up. If Philly couldn’t trade Pap or Hamels then, nothing is going to happen in the first month of the season.

“Yankees GM Brian Cashman credits his analytics department for recommending Chris Young.”
That’s interesting. The Mets have a strong analytics department and they released him. So I guess it’s analytics dept. vs. analytics dept. The game within the game.

Braun would be a tough pill for Dodger attendees to swallow especially after Kemp trade.
He is still the cheat who stole Kemp’s MVP around here.
