Here’s the latest from San Diego…
- The Padres are listening to trade offers for Ian Kennedy, Andrew Cashner and Tyson Ross, FOX Sports’ Ken Rosenthal reports (Twitter links). The team would look for hitting in return, though you’d suspect the asking prices would vary given the levels of team control — Kennedy is a free agent after the 2015 season, Cashner after 2016 and Ross after 2017. Rosenthal speculates that the Braves, Cubs, Diamondbacks, Indians, Rangers and Royals could fit as possible trade partners for San Diego.
- If the Padres are dealing some of their starters, then the addition of Kwang-Hyun Kim is a way to add depth, Dennis Lin of the San Diego Union-Tribune writes. The Padres posted the high bid for Kim’s services and have just under a month to negotiate a contract with the Korean left-hander.
- Carlos Quentin is open to waiving his no-trade clause to be dealt to an AL team, CBS Sports’ Jon Heyman reports (Twitter link). Quentin has a long history of knee injuries and playing in the American League would allow him to get some rest in a DH role.

Cron + for Ross? Padres in need of a bat and the Angels needing young pitching.
Out in Left Field
Why would the Padres make that deal? They turned down Cron + two prospects they eventually got in the Street deal for Kennedy at the trading deadline last year.
34red4
What’s your source? I remember reading specifically that Dipoto was not offering anyone on the big league roster, which Cron was a part of.
Wes Murry
I remember that, too.
Flowseidon
That’s no where near enough to land Ross. He’s a controllable All Star (FA in 2018) with one of the best sliders in the game. 2.81 ERA, average a K/IP. Cron was exposed in the second half: .205/.247/.342. Plus he can barely field his position.
34red4
Agreed. Ross is way to valuable to even be considered for Cron.
I think SD is willing to sacrifice fielding for power though, so I like to think Cron for Kennedy conversations will be starting up.
vtadave
Guess he said Cron+, but not sure what value the “+” would have considering the state of the Angels’ farm system.
34red4
That’s the thing, I don’t think anyone in the farm (that wasn’t drafted in 2014) is enough of a “+” to get that deal going. Quantity doesn’t really add up to quality either.
RobbyH619
The Angels depleted the farm to knab street. 4 of their better trqde chips were given up for Street in Lindsey Alvarez and Rondon. Idk what morris was worth but who knows
Wes Murry
Cron+ is an upgraded CJ Cron. Like the iPhone 6 and the iPhone 6+. CJ Cron+ would be obnoxiously bigger, cost more, and have a slightly better camera.
mrshyguy99
Be funny to see the Cubs get cashner back.
dlacsa
…for Anthony Rizzo

Castro for Cashner and prospects.
i'm me ..
why? Everth Cab is the same player as Castro.
Colin Chartier
castro > everth cab
i'm me ..
greater money…60M and Everth only cost 2.4M. Castro is not that much better to take on the contract and get rid of Cashner….is he?
Colin Chartier
padres wont trade cashner he is their future. If the Padres do trade a pitcher it will be Kennedy
dlacsa
I don’t know about Cashner. He’s injury prone and he also rejected an extension earlier in the year.
Flowseidon
Castro is one of the better hitting shortstops with 3 All Star appearances to prove it. Everth lone appearance is tainted by PEDs.
i'm me ..
Worth 60M?? and Cashner? i think not.
Bielsa Widow
It’s actually $44M and it’s spread out over five years.
i'm me ..
44M not as bad…
vtadave
….and Cabrera is bad, really bad.
i'm me ..
he has been bad but for any deal for Ross or Cashner i hope they keep Everth over Castro.
Flowseidon
The only other place Everth could play right now is the California Penal League.
dlacsa
Don’t forget about Cabrera’s recent charge for resisting arrest
rizdak
…excluding the PEDs, DUI and .572 OPS.
i'm me ..
still a top 20 SS.
Flowseidon
In the majors? That isn’t much to brag about. That’s like saying the Padres are a top 20 baseball team.
i'm me ..
hate all you want. my point is…he’s a serviceable SS in the major leagues that will put up similar #s to Castro for way less money and the Padres keep Cashner.
RobbyH619
If they’re trading for cub SS while giving up Cashner and Prospects it better be Russell or Alcantara. I think that’s how you spell it. Why would the Padres trade for an expensive shortstop AND give up cost controlled assests? Now if they trade you kennedy and take his entire contract and toss in a few medium prospects not in Top 15 sure or the Cubs eat money on castros deal ok maybe Cashner and good upside prospect not in top 10
i'm me ..
Padres could trade to get Jason Heyward from the Braves.
Out in Left Field
Kennedy for Heyward. Both are free agents after the 2015 season.
Salionski
Wouldn’t really benefit the Braves. Swapping one year players doesn’t make any sense. If/when Heyward is dealt it is much more likely to be with the future in mind. Though that deal wouldn’t even make sense in a win now situation either.
vtadave
Probably makes more sense to keep Heyward, try and deal him at the deadline if the Braves are out of it, and then take the draft pick once he walks.
Salionski
More than likely. They might take a deal earlier if it wows them and/or if they believe that the player(s) they’re targeting could end up traded to another party. I don’t expect they’ll kneejerk trade Heyward.
batman
Alvarez for Cashner?
i'm me ..
no thanks. The Padres already have Yasmani Grandal and that horrid .225 Avg.
batman
Cole and Cash would be nasty together. But agree. What would it take do you think for the Buccos?
i'm me ..
not sure it would be a match BUT i would imagine the Names : Glasnow and Hanson would be in any convo
vtadave
That would end conversations pretty quickly.
Flowseidon
A troubled hitter who can’t throw across the diamond for an up and coming ace?
Jake Remus
The White Sox are in the market for a DH, and there’s no better option in my mind than Quentin, the former fan favorite himself
I Want My Bird
Quentin is a DL not a DH.
Martin H.
Angels had interest on Kennedy and still need a starter.
Kennedy for Kendrick and with a prospect?
Move Jedd back to 3rd? And let Howie take 2nd
After all the Angels are open to trade Kendrick
i'm me ..
doubt it. Padres added Solarte mid season.
Martin H.
Ehh thats true .. Forgot about Solarte
i'm me ..
but…i could see the Braves looking into any of those 3 SP in a deal for Heyward.
Martin H.
Do you think Pads could land Tomas? Even though Phills are the favs?
i'm me ..
Money alone , yes. The San Diego weather would be what made me pick SD over Philly…lol
Flowseidon
Padres aren’t looking to contend now so they’ll want someone more controllable.
MikeTroutForMayor
Get crazy and go trade for Cole Hamels, if Max Fried reaches his potential, a rotation of those 2 would be fun to watch. (I’m just joking)
Dalton Starkey
It’d be the ultimate troll for the Cubs to get Cashner back.
Zummies
Sure, if they got him back for nothing.
Mihailo1227
The white sox need atleast one more quality starting right hander.
budman3
Trade Quentin (and 3 million) and Rivera to the Rays for Sean Rodriquez, Curt Casali, and Mikie Mahtook
thehillz1
Keep Cashner and Ross. Get what you can for Kennedy.
talcha32
What would it take for Texas to get their hands on Kennedy and Grandal? I’d think it wouldn’t be crazy expensive. Then you could add Liriano for a relatively cheap deal and then drop a ton of cash on a big 4 year deal (options included) to bring the Cruz Missile back to town. Whatever’s left can be used to grab some lefty relievers. All offseason holes filled in four easy steps for JD.
