The Pirates had the inside track on signing A.J. Burnett, as agent Derek Braunecker told Travis Sawchik of the Pittsburgh Tribune-Review. “It’s the only place he wanted to play in 2015. He instructed me to negotiate exclusively with the Pirates and thankfully there was mutual interest,” Braunecker said. Burnett enjoyed his previous stint in Pittsburgh and rejoined the Bucs on a one-year, $8.5MM deal. Here’s some more from around the NL Central…
- Mutual interest exists between the Cubs and free agent righty Jason Hammel, CSN Chicago’s Patrick Mooney reports. Hammel pitched well during his three months as a Cub in 2014 prior to being traded to the A’s, and Mooney points out yet another connection between the two sides — Hammel played under Joe Maddon in Tampa in 2008. At least nine teams and as many as 12 teams have reportedly shown interest in Hammel this offseason, including the Astros and Yankees.
- The Cubs’ trade for Tommy La Stella “wasn’t a precursor to anything,” GM Jed Hoyer told reporters (including ESPN Chicago’s Jesse Rogers). “Sometimes you have to acquire guys that can get on-base. It’s something we needed.” The La Stella deal seemed curious given how the Cubs already have a surplus of young middle infielders, though Hoyer said his team had tried to trade for La Stella “several times in the past.”
- It’s an open question as to whether or not the Reds will sign Johnny Cueto to a new contract, though an extension shouldn’t be ruled out on purely financial reasons, John Fay of the Cincinnati Enquirer opines. Though Fay thinks extending Cueto would cost “probably north of $150MM,” the Reds will be seeing a revenue increase over the next few years thanks to a new TV deal. If Cueto will take a back-loaded deal, that would lessen the burden on the Reds’ payroll until Brandon Phillips’ contract is off the books following the 2017 campaign.
- Fay thinks there is a “close to zero” chance that the Reds would trade Cueto this winter, since “owner Bob Castellini is not going to have a fire sale. Period. He thinks this team can win and he wants to win badly.” While Cincinnati seems likely to deal a starting pitcher this offseason, recent rumors suggest that Cueto will stay put.
- The Cardinals should jump at the chance to acquire a power-hitting outfielder and not worry about blocking their young OF prospects, Bernie Miklasz of the St. Louis Post-Dispatch opines. Miklasz feels the Cardinals have some long-term questions in their outfield since Jon Jay is “a year-to-year” player who almost lost his job last offseason, right field prospects Stephen Piscotty and Randal Grichuk are unproven and veteran Matt Holliday is only under contract for two more seasons.

I completely agree with Bernie, there isn’t anything that should keep the Cardinals from upgrading RF. The problem is, who is it that makes sense? There’s nothing intriguing on the Free-Agent market. Cargo, Heyward, Upton could all make sense IF they are available and depending on the price.

Yasmany Tomas?
stl_cards16
I would like to see that. That seems a bit more risky than a move Mozeliak would make. However, with a lot of money to spend and a gaping hole in RF, maybe they’re one of the unknown teams. That would definitely be a surprise.
WisBrave
The Cards should just put forth there best offer within reason of the team and see what happens. He might be the best way for them to go as long as they don’t pay him enough to handicap the team if he busts. The Cards might not be the highest bidder but as long as they are close I’d think they have a chance at him.
Lefty_Orioles_Fan
I know I am interested in all of those you listed as well as Tomas stated below by WisBrave.
Bidding War! =P
Actually, that would be bad, because even though I like a game of can you top this, it really is not all that conducive in the game of baseball.

I’d take Adam Jones!
Jeff Jones
The LaStrella I agree is not a precursor to a bigger trade. In the minors he had good stats (.322 BA .407 OBA) and he is a lefty, Seems to be a good late innings pinch hitter when the Cubs could use a bas runner instead of Baez trying to launch one into the stands and striking out.
brian310
With those stats he should be starting and hitting leadoff. And of course Theo isn’t just going to come out and tell everyone he is trying to move players. I think there’s a solid chance Baez and others (Vogelbach?) Get dealt for a Cole Hamels.
Jeff Jones
You could be right, the Cubs don’t have a natural second baseman, and so many prospects so few positions it seems that some will be traded. Vogelbach,Alacantra,Baez, and Olt seem to be the prime candidates to be dealt. All in all it seems to a be adecent deal for the Cubs.
oh Hal
Those are minor league stats. The ones in the majors aren’t so pretty.

Glad to have A.J. back in Pittsburgh. Should be a good 3-4 starter with the better defense in Pittsburgh than Philly.
batman
I completely agree. Now they just need to a Franky/McCarthey type of Pitcher and Im liking their team

Would really love to re-sign Liriano and go after either Ross or Cashner. A rotation of Cole, Liriano, Cashner/Ross, Burnett, and Worley would be sick, especially considering you’d have Morton back mid-season as well and Taillon, Kingham, Glasnow in the wings.
Cole Hoppmann
I would love the cardinals to get car-go or nelson Cruz or sign or trade for 2 part time guys there like gattis or morse
M.Kit
How about Heyward?
schaddy24
Regardless of what Theo/Jed say, I believe that acquiring La Stella is setting the Cubs up to make a major trade. I’m not saying it will be this off-season (or the trade deadline), but you can’t realistically carry 4 starting middle infielders on one roster. By saying it’s not a precursor to something larger, they keep some leverage in trade discussions.

If Hammell goes back to the Cubs and Lester and Andrew Miller go back to the Red Sox after being traded for quality prospects only a few months earlier, then MLB is going to have a bit of an integrity problem. Again.

Why? These players are all free agents, and are free to sign wherever they want for whatever reasons motivate them.
Mikenmn
I think this is a bigger issue than you might be acknowledging. They are all free agents, and they can pick where to go, but being yo-yo free agents does give someone the right to ask whether there was a tacit agreement between player and selling team prior to the trade.
pearljamrox2
It doesn’t matter if there was. The acquiring teams knew the terms. The A’s knew Lester was only a rental, it was figured into the cost. It shouldnt matter to the A’s where these players go when they leave, they obviously weren’t resigning in Oakland.

Why?

I prayed that the Cubs wouldn’t sign Martin and now I have to pray that they don’t sign Hammel. I’m sure asking for a lot these days….

Jon Jay is a “year-to-year player?” Ever since he took over CF for good following the Rasmus trade in July 2011, Jay has actually been a very consistent player with the lone exception of the 2013 season. He’s good to go in CF for the next two years.
