Here are the day’s outright assignments:
- The Cubs have made a series of roster trims, according to Mark Gonzales of the Chicago Tribune (via Twitter). Outfielder Ryan Kalish and infielders Chris Valaika and Josh Vitters have each been outrighted, according to Gonzales. Righty James McDonald has elected free agency as well.
- The Orioles have outrighted righty Evan Meek to Triple-A, the club announced. Meek will have the right to elect free agency, as he has previously been outrighted (including once earlier this year). Meek, 31, threw to a 5.79 ERA over 23 1/3 innings at the MLB level, all in relief. He struck out 6.2 and walked 4.2 batters per nine over that stretch. Meek has had better stretches in the majors, however, and even made an All-Star appearance with the Pirates back in 2010. Over 41 2/3 Triple-A frames this year, Meek worked to a 1.94 ERA with 8.0 K/9 against just 0.9 BB/9.
His All-Star appearance was with the Pirates, just a heads up on a minor oversight in the OP.
Tigers are the Pirates North anyway (at least that’s the moniker they got in the 2006 World Series around the Burgh).
Correct. He was typing fast, he meant the Pirates.
Oh no, the ‘Meek’ster has been been disinherited!
The Baltimore bullpen is not for the Meek!
The Meek shall inherit the earth.
Thanks Meek for possibly grooving Jeter’s last hit at YS for a walkoff.
Guys like this are always fascinating. How do you go from being a fringe guy that couldn’t make a 40 man roster, to figuring it out for a year and becoming an All-star, then effectively becoming a fringe player who can’t make a 40 man roster at age 31? I guess it’s a pretty narrow divide between being good player and a marginal player – wonder if that provide inspiration for him (I was an AS, I can be again) or if it is haunting (why can’t I get guys out anymore?)
If I were any GM, I would put a waiver claim on Vitters. Too early to give up on.
I was kinda thinking the same thing… but not ‘any’ GM, a team like the Astros or Mets who are rebuilding and can afford to lose the roster spot
Its been 2 or 3 years, but I can remember prospect evaluators gushing over Vitters’ swing.
