The Orioles are closing in on an extension with shortstop J.J. Hardy and could announce an agreement this afternoon, Jeremy Conn of 105.7 The Fan reports on Twitter. Terms are expected to land at three years and over $40MM, with an option of some kind included on the back end, according to a tweet from Ken Rosenthal of FOX Sports.
An extension has long been rumored to be a possibility. But reports indicated that talks never really got started over the winter and early portion of the season.
Things have changed since that time, of course. For one, Manny Machado — long considered the eventual replacement for Hardy at short — suffered a second consecutive season-ending knee surgery and has in any event established himself as a premier defensive third baseman. On top of that, as you might have noticed, the O’s cruised to the American League East crown and into the ALCS. While it is hard to know whether that had any role in Baltimore’s thinking, the added current and future revenue stream surely did not hurt.
Of course, Hardy’s performance has had its ups and downs this year. While his power numbers are down, and he was fairly inconsistent at the plate on the whole, Hardy continues to provide immense value with his glove. In the aggregate, Hardy was once again about a 3-and-a-half win player in the regular season.
While several other useful shortstop options are present on the upcoming free agent market, Hardy seemed to be the prize — at least for clubs looking for an option that promises to stick at the position over the duration of the contract. (Hanley Ramirez, it seems fair to say, does not fit that description.) His absence from the market would be a boon to the likes of Asdrubal Cabrera, Jed Lowrie, and Stephen Drew.

Glad for the Orioles. Was hoping Yankees would get him if he became a FA, but good to see the O’s doing this. I think he’s one of the most underrated SS in baseball.
Rally Weimaraner
Good job O’s. Yankees will have to start looking for a different SS, in related news Hanley Ramirez is rejoicing.
MB923
Hanley was/is going to get a big contract regardless of how much Hardy would get.
LazerTown
Whenever you take one guy off the board you get intensive competition. It’s really good for the other shortstops, because aside from Drew who was awful with the bat, they all have questions defensively. Take away the only one with a good glove and bat, and suddenly Hanley has tons suitors at ss.
MB923
Fair points.
Rally Weimaraner
True but Hardy was the second best offensive SS on the market and his ability to actually play SS made him a real alternative to Hanley. None of the other SS on the market can really been seen as alternatives to Hanley.
MB923
Only one that comes to mind really is Asdrubel Cabrera. Not comparing him to either of the 2, but he’s probably the next best one after Hanley, at least the next best one I can think of.
Rally Weimaraner
He would be next on my list too but he’s a pretty bad defensive SS, which is why he has played over 400 inning at 2B this year.
MB923
All of that was with the Nationals though who already had a SS in Ian Desmond. Cabrera didn’t play a single inning at 2B with the Indians and hadn’t played 2B since 2009 which was a year where he still played more games & innings at SS.
But yes I agree he isn’t very good defensively.
Seamaholic
Cabrera doesn’t really play SS anymore. There’s just nothing out there now. Yanks and A’s (among others) are going to be scrambling. Good for Dbacks and Cubs, who have a SS to spare.
Suny
Gonna be interesting now. Because where are they going to put Chris Davis next season if they bring back Cruz?
MB923
Who knows, but neither of those 2 play SS so I don’t see how this extension changes or has any effect on that decision.
Bleed_Orange
I think he’s referring to Davis moving to 3rd while Machado plays ss with Pierce at 1st
MB923
I completely forgot Davis plays 3B too on occasion. Though only 91 career games there.
Bleed_Orange
Yeah not the ideal option at 3rd. Honestly Davis may be a DFA option after the season
robbyb
He will be back.. Pearce is a better back up option.. not everyday 1B..
Bleed_Orange
10 million+ to a strike out machine, who hit less than 30 home runs, and got suspended before the playoffs for failing a drug test? Sounds like a DFA candidate to me
Suny
That’s unlikely. Buck can teach patience, he can’t teach power. If Cruz is coming back, expect to see a ton of platooning next season, as well as a lot of pinch-hitting. Buck Showalter is going to be the happiest man alive with all the toys he’s going to be able to play with next season.

Don’t put all your eggs in one basket. I have a feeling Pearce could be the 2014 Mike Carp. I’d like to see if he can somewhat duplicate this year’s performance in 2015.
daveingb
DH Cruz like they’ve been mostl doing, Davis at 1b, Pearce in LF. Resign Young if they if they prefer the platoon option,if not, Lough is a good defensive/baserunning option late in the game. There’s also De Aza.
Bleed_Orange
Cruz isn’t coming back, unless he’s willing to take a David Ortiz like contract
MB923
Orioles are now extending Cruz it says.
Bleed_Orange
lol not the first time I was wrong…. just hope its not to much. Still like the David Ortiz contract as a comparison
Buckweaver
Why not the same place as this year? Buck is a master of manipulating the roster. There’s room for Davis, Cruz, Pierce and De aza to rotate between first, left and DH. It’s probably wishful thinking on my part that they’ll all be back, but I’m wishing!

This is great news for Asdrubal Cabrera
robbyb
Finally an end of the Hardy to Yankees rumors..
Kyle 19
Well this was unexpected, as we are in the middle of the playoffs…
Bleed_Orange
DD got board waiting for the ALCS
MeowMeow
Yeah, Orioles, this is probably what you should have the players be focusing on a day before the ALCS starts…
Seamaholic
Sounds like this isn’t a protracted negotiation. They are just giving him what he asked for, which is probably a little below market. Not a distraction, in fact it might take a distraction away.

Given how quick these news stories came, I can believe that
Lionel Schuler
Mariners should package Saunders, Medina, Maurer, Smoak, and Young to Florida for Giancarlo Stanton.
