The Rockies’ payroll will likely remain near its Opening Day mark of $94MM, a team spokesperson tells Patrick Saunders of the Denver Post. This is problematic for the Rockies, Saunders writes, given that Troy Tulowitzki, Carlos Gonzalez and Jorge De La Rosa will combine to earn $48.5MM of that figure next season. Season-ending injuries to Tulowitzki and Gonzalez will make it difficult to extract full prospect value for either star in a potentially cost-saving trade, meaning that the team is likely to have 51.8 percent of its payroll tied up in three players. That, in turn, would make it difficult to adequately address the rotation, bullpen and catching situation this offseason — all of which are areas of need in Denver. Geivett recently reiterated to Saunders that the team has had no discussions about trading either Tulowitzki or Gonzalez
Here’s more from Saunders and more on the Rockies…
- Saunders spoke to senior VP of Major League operations Bill Geivett about the team’s $12MM option on Brett Anderson. Geivett said that the Rockies “really think he’s an impact starter when healthy,” but that the option would be discussed following the season. Given the team’s payroll constraints, it seems almost impossible to imagine Colorado paying Anderson $12MM after starting just 32 games over the past four seasons.
- Saunders also notes that Michael Cuddyer is a favorite of owner Dick Monfort and manager Walt Weiss, both of whom want the veteran back. However, Saunders feels it’s difficult to imagine the Rockies paying even $4-6MM for Cuddyer next season, and I’d wager that he’s looking for more than that despite an injury plagued 2014. Cuddyer, 36 next March, has batted .328/.382/.530 in 170 games over the past two seasons.
- Twenty-eight-year-old lefty Yohan Flande will get a couple of starts before season’s end in an audition for 2015, writes Saunders’ colleague, Nick Groke. Weiss said the organization feels Flande can transition to the bullpen if needed, but they’ve yet to give up on him as a starting pitcher. MLB.com’s Thomas Harding notes that top prospect Eddie Butler, too, will receive a look in the final two weeks. While it seems Colorado is evaluating its internal options, I have to think they’ll at least attempt to lure in a veteran starter to complement De La Rosa alongside younger arms such as Butler, Jordan Lyles, Tyler Matzek and, eventually, Jon Gray. Jhoulys Chacin also figures to be in the mix, though he’s battled shoulder injuries this season.
- A look at Cot’s Contracts reveals that the Rockies currently have about $61.4MM on the books in 2015. That doesn’t include arbitration raises for Chacin, Drew Stubbs, Juan Nicasio, Rex Brothers, Tyler Chatwood, Wilin Rosario and Adam Ottavino. Wilton Lopez and Nicasio seem like clear non-tender candidates, and it’s possible that a few others could meet that fate as well. Nonetheless, Colorado’s glut of forthcoming arbitration raises doesn’t seem to leave the team with much wiggle room, if payroll truly is to remain in the $94MM range.

So next season will be exactly the same for the Rockies. Due to the popularity of the new roof top bar and the high average attendance, I have a tough time seeing the Rockies changing anything.

It would be a mistake for the Mets to overpay for veterans like Tulowitzki and Gonzalez. As good as they are, let some other team have at them. Wow, I had no idea Brett Anderson had a $12MM option, that for surely would be declined.
ezrider
It’s an even bigger mistake that the Mess are sticking with the Sandy/Terry combo. Bigger than that is the fact that the Wilpon’s are allowed to continue owning and running this franchise into the ground.
If dollars wise we could afford it i’d overpay a bit for a Tulo to give some life and power to this offense. Some outstanding D at the SS position would be gravy. Our internal options for offensive upgrades are not all that “sterling” so they’ll need to come from someplace outside the organization.
Pete Harnisch
Or sign JJ Hardy and save your pitching prospects.

Sandy has been a decent GM, far better than Omar, for sure. Has Sandy been awesome/perfect? Not at all, but let’s say the Mets deal for Tulo and he gets hurt, then what?

The Rockies need to leave Colorado as quickly as possible. How long are they tied down? They should be scouting cities. Teams usually have 20-25 year contracts, right? And they started in 95, so that means 2025 or 2030? You’d hope they would skip town then.
Vinnie White
Why leave town? They still pull in 25,000 fans. That makes no sense what-so-ever.
SwingtimeInTheRockies
Agreed. That was a bit of a mind-boggling comment.
Derpy
Look up “Either the numbers are lying or the game is rigged.”
In essence, the Rockies have the largest homefield disadvantage in MLB. The biggest in professional American sports, and maybe the biggest in professional sports world wide. It is an insurmountable challenge to build a team in Denver.
Vinnie White
And again. . . .the owners pull in 25,000 per game. I know. I’ve been there. Why would they, or the MLB, EVER pull a team out of Colorado? We are a state of transplants.
Derpy
There is a zero percent chance the Rockies will ever have a sustainable winning team. The most they could ever hope for is one good season followed by many years of failure, and that is assuming they can harness a large number of superstars. Baseball is essentially a 29 team league. That is unacceptable.
Vinnie White
Again, why would the MLB care? They have 25k+ fans going to every game. Coors Field is one of the best stadiums in the league. And yes they can have a sustainable team. They have to do it all from within and keep the prospects coming.
And it’s been proven for over 100+years that the Cubs can’t have a sustainable winning team. And they are still there. They WILL NOT MOVE THE ROCKIES.
Derpy
No, they cannot have sustainable teams when they have a -17 wRC+ as their baseline. In order for the Rockies to win 90 games they have to win something like 95 or 98 games. They have a built in handicap. They may as well start the season with -5 wins when every other team starts the season 0-0. The Rockies have to be so far above average just to be moderately competitive that the odds of them ever being actually competitive are very, very small.
Vinnie White
And again, who cares? If they draw, the MLB won’t care.
ezrider
If the Rockies want/need to upgrade the rotation, as a Mets fan i’m getting pretty willing to do things to upgrade the offense.
I’d trade Niese, Syndergaard, Mejia and Plawecki for Tulo and maybe a little contract relief. If Tulo responds well to the surgery and we find ways to get him rest maybe we can keep him on the field for at least 2/3 of the season.
SavageMets
I’m not giving up Syndergaard for anyone but Stanton or Trout. In other words I’m not giving him up for anyone. Leave the stud pitchers alone and sign Cuddyer/Hardy.
Seamaholic
You mean the guy with the 4.60 ERA in AAA, with the WHIP of about 1.5 and and AVG-Against of 280? That guy, or is there another Noah Syndergaard I’m not aware of? He’s a fine prospect, but VERY far from the sort of guy you make that kind of statement about. The Rockies have 2 or 3 better SP prospects — by performance, not buzz — already in their system.
David Coonce
Those numbers you cite for Syndergaard have been compiled in a worse offensive environment than even Coors field.
slasher016 2
No reason the Rockies can’t have a $110M+ payroll. Reeks of the owner just taking profits. Reds sit over that number and are in the #2 smallest market and smaller attendance. No reason they need to sit in the high 90s.
Scott Berlin
Tulo to the Yankees.
Charlie Burns
Lol, thanks for the good joke. I needed that laugh.
SwingtimeInTheRockies
Right?
Vinnie White
To the author of this story . . . .The Rockies WILL pick up the Anderson option for this reason only . . . . they will NEVER be able to lure a FA pitcher that has his talent for less. He is the only viable option outside of the young guns in the system.
SwingtimeInTheRockies
I think they save money by just running Frankie Mo and Flande out there another year. It’s not like winning is even a thing. Hell, they’re going to spend their money bringing back Cuddyer – not for what he does on the field be because they just out-and-out like the guy.
Vinnie White
Maybe. What’s Franklin’s contract situation like? I would rather him in the ‘pen along with Flande. If we have to go LH, I’d rather have Anderson as well as Jorge. And if Tyler keeps showing up, we have three in the rotation right there. I want to see Jorge, JC, Anderson, Butler/Gray, Matzik.
