The Mets will send three scouts to get a first-hand look at Yasmani Tomas for his showcase on Sunday, reports Newsday’s Marc Carig. However, as has been documented recently, the team’s payroll isn’t likely to rise significantly next season, which could make Tomas a stretch, financially speaking. The 23-year-old could top Rusney Castillo’s $72.5MM guarantee, and a $100MM commitment is certainly possible. Mets VP of player development and scouting Paul DePodesta tells Carig that despite the team’s lack of activity, they’ve been keeping close tabs on the Cuban market: “We have been very diligent about all of the free agents who have come available, there just hasn’t been a fit yet.”
Elsewhere in Mets-related news…
- Bill Madden of the New York Daily News writes that the lack of a payroll increase doesn’t necessarily doom the Mets in 2015, as the team’s surplus of young pitching gives them an inexpensive rotation and the ability to trade for a cost-controlled shortstop if it is eventually deemed necessary. However, he feels that it’s becoming clear that the Mets intend to try to fill the shortstop hole from within, giving Wilmer Flores an opportunity to prove himself. Left field may be the more problematic area of need for New York, and while GM Sandy Alderson would like to fill that void via trade, Madden says, the dearth of power hitters in the game might make it difficult to swing. He suggests Michael Cuddyer as a viable free agent option, which makes some degree of sense for the Mets in my opinion. While Madden doesn’t state it, Cuddyer could start at first base versus left-handed pitching to shield Lucas Duda and jump to the outfield against righties. Madden also rightly notes that payroll doesn’t guarantee success, and a look at this year’s contenders and non-factors proves that.
- Triple-A manager Wally Backman is joining the coaching staff for the final nine games of September, and a team insider tells Adam Rubin of ESPNNewYork.com that the possibility of adding Backman to the 2015 coaching staff is “under consideration.” Many fans prefer Backman to manager Terry Collins, Rubin notes, but Collins says he views Backman as an ally rather than a threat: “We have a very strong relationship. Wally and I are very good friends. We always have been — for a lot of years. … He brings a lot to the table.”
- Madden’s colleague, Andy Martino, writes that the Mets shouldn’t have to subtract payroll by trading someone like Bartolo Colon or Daniel Murphy in order to add a free agent such as Cuddyer or another bat. The baseball ops department should be granted what it needs to work with, as Alderson “does not exactly ask for the moon.” He also notes that Alderson and Backman have a good deal of philosophical differences, so if Backman is on next year’s staff, it’ll mean the GM didn’t want to choose that battle or he feels he can keep a better eye on him with the big league club.

How many years is Cuddyer looking at? Dollars? He’s not my first choice, but they gotta do something.
Pei Kang
ugh, no thanks. Cuddyer smacks Jason Bay in my mind, plus, he’s OLD and injury prone.
Out of place Met fan
Bay was never the player Cuddy is/was
DarthMurph
He’ll likely be able to get two at a reasonable AAV. Contending teams might be able to get him for one, but not the Mets.
Out of place Met fan
Was thinking it will take a deal similar to Byrds, 2 with a vesting option to get him on the Mets

Lining up the fans for another sub-500 year. Great work Wilpons.

100 million for a Tomas? I’d like to see the team who would do that..

Spending vast sums doesn’t necessarily equate with success on the field–look at the Yankees, Rangers and Red Sox this year for confirmation of that–injuries and underperformance can derail the best plans. The frustration with the Mets is that the market they are in creates lots of revenue, and Met ownership is focused solely on paying down their debt and increasing operating income. You really do get the impression that they would sooner take their chances losing with a less expensive roster than make a significant move that could possibly get them closer to wild-card contention.
yclept
I think you nailed it here. No, spending wildly does not always equate to success – but this isn’t always true, as the 2009 Yankees showed. Saying “We aren’t going to spend money because it doesn’t correlate to success” is, at the very least, inaccurate. It isn’t like the Orioles, Tigers, Angels, Nationals, and Dodgers don’t spend money. The Dodgers have the highest payroll in the game, for crying out loud.
josebatista89
But the Dodgers have one of the best farm system market’s in the mlb. The Yanks, Tigers don’t have that anymore.

The Mets LF has to come via trade. The reason I am saying this is because no player that’s any good is going to sign with the Mets for just 1 year. Cuddyer would want at least 2 years and teams would be willing to give it to him.
Just put MDD/Campbell combo in there if no trades materialize.
Dave_in_Spain
They could sign Cuddyer on a 2 year deal, and then use him as a PH/backup 1B/backup OF in 2016. Plus, I think he´s good friends with Wright, so might sign for one year plus an option or something.

Yasiel Puig was not a “fit” for the Mets?
stl_cards16
Everyone screamed overpay when the Dodgers signed Puig. Hindsight is nice but it’s hard to fault the Mets for not out bidding the Dodgers at the time.

The Mets have a decent enough core to be a competitive team in the NL. They need to spend some money to build around their talent and fill in the gaps. The Wilpon’s don’t seem to want to do that and that’s a big problem.
Jack Strawb
The really don’t have a decent enough core. At all. Short of bumping payroll up by at least 2 stars, or around $30-35 million, they’ll have about a 5% shot in 2015 of making the postseason.
rct 2
Disagree. Harvey, deGrom, and Wheeler are a solid rotation core. Plus, there’s Niese, Gee, Syndergaard. Bullpen has Black, Familia, and Mejia.
Offensively, it’s a little different, but Lagares is one of the best CF in baseball. Murphy is one of the best 2B in the NL. Duda has 28 HR and has played well. d’Arnaud has hit very well since coming back up.
Even with just Harvey back, the Mets would be above .500. If they added ‘at least 2 stars’ (and if Wright played just a little better), they would have a very good shot at making the playoffs in 2015.
Jack Strawb
I can’t help noticing you’ve had to focus on some very slender reeds here. There’s no reason to think DeGrom will repeat. D’Arnaud doesn’t yet have a full, good season under his belt. Harvey will be coming back from serious surgery. Wheeler has yet to show he’s other than dead average. Duda has all of one season where he hasn’t been worse than replacement level. I doubt the Mets can afford to keep Murphy and if they can they won’t be adding anyone.
The team has been very healthy this season, which is more luck. Their scrap-pile relievers have been startlingly good and very likely won’t repeat. Even more luck. Wright and Granderson and Colon especially are well into their decline phases (in fact, Wright’s 2014 was completely in line with three of his previous five seasons), and rate to be worse next year.
.
The team had to be very, very lucky this season just to get to mid70 wins. That’s what many people are missing. I think the team has a much shot at contending in 2016 than it does in 2015.

“Hasn’t been a fit yet?” JOSE ABREU wouldn’t have been a “fit?”
JordanSwingman
I’m still interested in seeing what the Mets do about the d’Arnaud/Plawecki situation. I’d really hate to trade either of them, and with the Mets as poor financially as they are, it just seems rather redundant to trade guys you can use for 4-6 years at a discounted price. d’Arnaud also is a high concussion risk, which being behind the plate for 120 games does not help.
As for SS, it’s really not a great free agent situation. You can kind of see flashes from Flores, and at age 22 it is hard to give up on him.
NYM_Lagares
With d’Arnaud, they stated a possible move to left field so that would solve that problem until Nimmo is ready. I think Flores could be good but if they were willing to go the free agent route they should look at Jed Lowrie and JJ Hardy, both of whom had down season so they might be able to get them on shorter deals for less money. Plus Matt Reynolds had a promising year at AAA. But realistically I think they need Yasmani Tomas to play left field and Wally Backman to be the manager. Terry just makes bad lineups.
josebatista89
In my opinion Cuddyer is a perfect signing. He will only command a one year or two year contract. Although the Mets need to get someone who scares opposing teams.
NYM_Lagares
They should go after Cuddyer to play LF/1B when they face lefties. But if they’re willing to spend the money go after Tomas for 6yr/100 million with a team option after year 3 or 4
