The Tigers have “kicked around” the idea of trading for a hitter to bolster the back end of their lineup, FOX Sports’ Ken Rosenthal reports in his latest Full Count video. Finding a quality bat will be more difficult in the August waiver period, of course, and there also isn’t any position that Detroit would clearly be looking to upgrade. Rosenthal says the team is “pretty much set in the outfield,” though I’d argue that adding another outfielder to complement or even replace J.D. Martinez or Rajai Davis (both of whom were originally acquired to be part-timers) would help the Tigers down the stretch.
Here’s some more from Rosenthal’s video and a separate piece that examines which managers and general managers could be on the hot seat…
- Some of Jon Lester’s former teammates believe the southpaw will sign with the Cubs this offseason. Lester, of course, has ties to Theo Epstein and Jed Hoyer, and the Cubs’ recent waiver claim of Cole Hamels indicates that the team is prepared to spend big money on a top-tier starting pitcher.
- Had the Padres hired Yankees assistant GM Billy Eppler, the return of Kevin Towers to the San Diego organization “would’ve been almost automatic.” (The two worked together in New York.) Between Tony La Russa’s hiring in Arizona and the firing of Josh Byrnes in San Diego, rumors have swirled for weeks that Towers would find himself back with the Friars given his friendship with Padres president/CEO Mike Dee. As Rosenthal notes, Towers could still return under new GM A.J. Preller, though rival executives are split as to whether Towers’ presence would be a positive or a negative for Preller as a first-time general manager.
- Bud Black “would be out of work for about five minutes” if Preller decided to make a managerial change. Mike Dee recently told Rosenthal that Preller would decide on Black’s future with the Padres, though the fact that Black’s removal was “never seriously considered” by upper management would seem to bode well for the long-time skipper.
- While Reds GM Walt Jocketty is in the final year of his contract, “there is no indication that Jocketty wants to leave, or that owner Bob Castellini wants him out.” Rosenthal speculates that a reunion between Jocketty and La Russa in Arizona could be a possibility, though Jocketty might prefer to stay with the contending Reds rather than face a rebuilding job with the D’Backs.
- Ruben Amaro’s future as the Phillies’ GM has been in question given the team’s struggles, which could also mean that manager Ryne Sandberg’s continued employment could also be up in the air. The Hall-of-Famer has “at times looks overmatched, struggling in his communications with veterans and with his in-game management,” Rosenthal writes, though he points out that Sandberg hasn’t been given much to work with on the roster. Sandberg is under contract through the end of the 2016 season.
- Could Jeff Luhnow’s job actually be in jeopardy? Rosenthal isn’t sure, though he notes that “internal tension seems unavoidable” in Houston. The Astros have seen little improvement on the field this season and Luhnow’s front office was widely criticized for its handling of the Brady Aiken negotiations.
- Mike Maddux’s Rangers contract is up at the end of the season, and while extension talks probably won’t take place until then, both Maddux and the team seem eager to see the long-time pitching coach remain in Texas.

Could Jeff Luhnow’s job actually be in jeopardy?
This is getting silly.
While the Astros aren’t a great team or even a good one.
Bo Porter has done an excellent job and the Astros are a real tough team to play.
I don’t know what more you could expect from Luhnow.
I think he’s done a good job!

Agree somewhat, but drafting Mark Appel over Kris Bryant and then completely botching the 2014 draft reflects poorly on him.
JimEdmondsMVP
There’s two sides to that coin, if you’re gonna bash him for Appel over Bryant you have to at least give him credit for Correa over Appel to begin with, a pick he got plenty of flak for & that looks to be a steal.
jb226 2
Not sure that’s a fair criticism, they were pretty much 1-2 on the draft boards.
In hindsight, sure, the Cubs are getting the way better side of that coin, I just don’t think hindsight is a fair way to evaluate a GM’s job performance.
vtadave
How else are we going to evaluate a GM’s performance if not for hindsight? I agree that trades and draft picks are not always easy to evaluate the moment they are made, but if those trades/picks don’t work out, the buck stops with the GM. They key is to make more good trades/picks than bad ones, so no GM is perfect of course.
Murray Rothbard
The fact remains that early returns haven’t been great for having consecutive number 1 picks. Though I wouldn’t be as critical of drafting Appel over Bryant because I like an approach of picking a high quantity of pitchers near the top of the draft.
essmeier
I’m not sure what the rules are regarding draft botching. Does the 2014 draft become retroactively unbotched once Brady Aiken’s ligament gives out?
vtadave
Ah yes, the whole “retroactive unbotching”. 🙂
I didn’t necessarily disagree with the pick at the time, but more on the way the negotiations were handled.

The Astros had a chance to add 2 or 3 top high school pitchers to their farm system. Every system could use more young power arms especially ones like Aiken, Nix and Marshall who stand 6’4, 6’4, 6’2 and can touch 97, 97, 94. Those were their only three HS players drafted. Two of them lefties and one of them is the ”most advanced high school pitcher I’ve ever seen in my entire career” according to Jeff Lunhow. Aiken still hasn’t turned 18 yet. If the Astros had to do it all over again I would think they would handle it all differently. I like Lunhow but he came away from the draft losing out on a 6’4 17 year old lefty who was pitching 97 MPH in his last HS game.
coldgoldenfalstaff
They already have a ton of arms in the system. Marshall was going to LSU and why pay top dollar for Aiken if you think he’s damaged goods?
Now we get #2, our own pick (currently #3) and also acquired the 1st Competitive Balance pick from the Marlins in the Cosart deal. All the botched Aiken signing did was push that potential haul back a year.
I hope Luhnow is smart and shies away from HS pitching next year, not only is it risky, but the wait is super-long.
ray_derek
Cubs got a bit of criticism for not taking pitching, obviously it’s worked out for them. Bryant is making hitting in the minors look easy, but let’s wait until he hits in the majors to make any assessment.
DarthMurph
I think Lester to the Cubs is far more likely than the Red Sox. He’s got his rings already and they can give him big money. I don’t think he’ll pass up the opportunity to team up with the GM who drafted him to try and end the Cubs’ drought.
bigbadjohnny
Tons of money can make you do funny things.
IdontknowwhyIpostonforums
Imagine being a front line starter and helping end two of the longest droughts in all of sports. That possibility alone should be enticing enough.
DarthMurph
Lester had nothing to do with 04, but it would be good for his legacy.
IdontknowwhyIpostonforums
That’s right, I forgot about 2004.
JustFatOlMe
I,being a Cubs fan, would love to have Lester as long as the years and money aren’t stupid.

Sandberg might be over-matched, but it’s hard to see how a team that is losing and has expensive brittle pieces would be an easy job. You might need to clean house-a new GM, a new manager, and maybe a couple of trades, even if they aren’t for value, just to make a point.
jeffm
It seems like Amaro is somewhat giving orders on who plays and how often. Sandberg has said he wants to add energy and youth to the line-up, but Rollins, Utley, Howard and Byrd have been in the line-up just about every day.
NotCanon
When your backup infielders are Brignac and Blanco, I can understand
keeping Utley and Rollins on the field. Sizemore has gotten plenty of
play recently as well. Ruf should probably be getting more time at
first (although he’s been slumping hard lately, while Howard has been
surging a little – and Howard’s been surprisingly good against LHP this
year), but I imagine part of that has to do with convincing Howard the
whole “we may release you” thing was just a false rumor.
Also: Ruf + Outfield = Blech.
jeffm
I’m not a particularly big fan of Ruf, but he did have an OPS over .800 in almost 300 plate appearances last year. He’s been fairly productive at the plate when given consistent regular at-bats. I don’t know if that would translate over 162-games, but he’s the kind of player they should be looking at over these final 40 or so games. Pretty much all the positional guys are known with the exception of Asche.
IMO, Asche is the only guy that should be guaranteed to play everyday the rest of the way. Though I’d start moving him around to see where else he can competently play. See if he can handle some SS and/or 2B, try the corner outfield spots. Maikel Franco will probably be the opening day 3B next year and Asche needs to make himself more versatile like a Ben Zobrist or Martin Prado to be on the roster in 2015. Teams don’t usually keep just a back-up 3B.
NotCanon
Asche can’t handle SS. He probably can’t handle 2B (and he probably won’t have the chance to do so, since Utley is cemented there for at least 2 years, in all likelihood). The rumor I heard that could have legs is Asche to LF (presumably seeing Dom and him platoon, at least until Byrd gets traded), where he may have the reflexes necessary, assuming he can hit consistently.
That said, I doubt Franco starts at 3B next year. He’s still super-young, and while he’s come on strong lately, he needs to prove he can hack it for longer periods of time. They also probably don’t want to start his clock until mid-way through next year anyway (preventing Super-2), since they don’t look to be super-competitive until 2017 at the earliest.
NotCanon
No, trading pieces just to make trades is not a good idea. It’s never a good idea. You may get lucky with some of them, but odds are far better that you don’t, and you set up your system for even worse times ahead.
A new GM would be apropos (although I imagine Amaro gets the chance to ride out his contract, since he’s only got a year left and that’s how the Phillies operate most of the time), and a new manager may be as well (Sandberg has made some truly head-scratching moves that leave me wondering if there wasn’t a reason the Cubs passed him over) however.
Ron Loreski
Why would you wanna replace JD Martinez and his .909 OPS? I am a believer that Martinez is here to stay. He’s altered his mechanics at the plate and it’s really paying off for him.
Kevin6CD
Yeah, they definitely need to keep him in the lineup. If anybody from the OF needs to sit, it’s Torii Hunter and his -0.2 WAR.
Curt Green
The Kittens need a fountain of youth for Hunter and Nathan. Their bullpen will bring them down sooner or later.
Ron Loreski
By fountain of youth, do you mean walking papers?
Kevin6CD
Strap them to a rocket and blast it into the sun. Neither has anything left in the tank.
tune-in for baseball
Right now they need Hunter’s bat even though he is a defensive question mark. That shows how bad it has become in Tigertown regarding the lack of team offense.
Kevin6CD
I hesitantly agree, I just really don’t like Torii. If it’s me, most nights I would just DH him, put VMart at 1B and Cabrera at 3B. Castellanos’ defense has only been marginally better than Miggy’s last year. Might as well optimize the offense.
tune-in for baseball
He is a part time platoon player at best, I believe hitting less than .200 since All Star break. Davis signed on as a platoon also but got more playing time with losing Dirks since March. They need a strong , solid lefty bat for the outfield. Have not seen any stories regarding any Tigers on waiver wire, so not sure who they will use as trade bait
Ron Loreski
Fair point, Martinez could be complimented with somewhat of a platoon. But he has been productive enough not to be completely replaced.
tune-in for baseball
Regarding the Tiger’s offense lately it is a stretch to use the word “productive”
Ron Loreski
51 RBI’s in 77 games is pretty productive.
tune-in for baseball
Very true but my concern is on the “lately” part of my post. Nobody (other than Vmart) is consistently driving in runs. I like JD Mart a lot but, like the rest of them, he only had 5 RBI since the All star break. To his credit, he did get 3 yesterday so hopefully he can help lead the team out of the hole they have fallen into. He is a good story for the 2014 Tigers and if he gets hot he will be a great story.
Mr Pike
They should just give Ezequiel Carrera some at bats. Maybe they will. They have seen almost nothing but lefties since he was called up.
coldgoldenfalstaff
Luhnow is rubbing all the old-school baseball people the wrong way, hence the smear job.
But both ownership and the fans think he’s doing a great job, so why make a change just cause he’s rocking the boat?
bigbadjohnny
If Sandberg is fired, his days as a Manager are over.
cgriffith
I been saying trade for Alex Rios for weeks; maybe DD finally realizes that Davis, Martinez, and Hunter create a big hole when there not performing well – in the case especially J.D. Martinez (reminds me of Chris Shelton his run just lasted until the all-star break ala Brennan Boesch in 2010)
cubsssss
Lester has a career 3.62 ERA and only one season (this season) with an ERA below 3…Is he really worth 20 million+ a year? He’s also 30. I’d rather the cubs wait another year when someone like David Price might be available.
