2:42pm: A three-team deal involving Price could well be in the works, with Price being the only piece moving from Tampa, tweets Topkin.
2:36pm: Lefty Enny Romero is under consideration in Tampa’s discussions, tweets Rosenthal, though precisely in what manner still unclear.
2:31pm: A three-team mix could be in the offing, according to reports. Bob Nightengale of USA Today tweets that there were discussions of such a deal involving Price and the Tigers and Mariners. And Marc Topkin of the Tampa Bay Times tweets that a three-team arrangement is under discussion now.
2:14pm: The Tigers appear to be the front-runner on Price at the moment, tweets Mark Feinsand of the New York Daily News.
2:13pm: The Yankees are unlikely to get Price, tweets Ken Rosenthal of FOX Sports.
2:04pm: The Yankees are also involved in discussions, per Bob Nightengale of USA Today (via Twitter).
1:33pm: The Cardinals may also still be involved on Price, per Marc Topkin of the Tampa Bay Times (via Twitter). His source indicates that the Cards, along with the Tigers and Mariners, are the final possible suitors.
1:28pm: The Rays are nearing a deal involving Price, tweets ESPN.com’s Jayson Stark. Where, however, remains unclear.
1:14pm: Drew Smyly would likely need to be part of a package to land Price, tweets Morosi.
1:11pm: The Dodgers are “not back in” on Price, tweets Peter Gammons of GammonsDaily.com.
1:02pm: The Pirates have also been discussing Price, Ken Rosenthal of FOX Sports reports on Twitter. In discussions with the Dodgers, prospect Joc Pederson is in play, adds Rosenthal.
12:52pm: The Tigers have discussed Price with the Rays today, reports Jon Morosi of FOX Sports (Twitter links).
12:47pm: The Dodgers and Mariners are the leading contenders to acquire Price, if he is dealt, tweets Jim Bowden of ESPN.com.
12:45pm:Â The Rays are “definitely moving” ace David Price, tweets Joel Sherman of the New York Post.
While Price has long been a subject of trade speculation, it seemed less and less likely he would be moved as Tampa reeled off an extensive winning streak. But in spite of the club’s solid play, it remains largely on the fringes of contention at this point.
Brewers!
Brewers have no one in the minors
Nelson, Taylor, Arcia, Coulter are all legit prospects
And Jimmy Nelson could possibly let them still contend this year. Milwaukee has been quiet all day, maybe this is what they are focusing on…you never know. Unless you are in the war room of course.
Nelson yes but after that it goes down hill pretty fast
Still a guy like Nelson could be really attractive over other center pieces. A lot depends on what the Rays want. I’m sure Lackey and Lester both could have netted big time prospects…yet the Red Sox went with MLB players.
I guarantee you that it will NOT be the Brewers. Rays want a LOT in return and the brew crew just doesn’t have it.
I’d rather have Joc Pederson, Urias, or Seager from the Dodgers
or
Josh Bell or Glasnow from the Pirates
or
Taijuan Walker from the M’s
as a centerpiece before I pick Nelson as a centerpiece.
Nelson is a fantastic prospect, but he is still not Top 20 quality
Looks like they were focusing more on Gerrardo Parra
Parra is a good and underrated pickup by the Brew Crew
Trade your top 20 prospects, and I’m still unsure whether Rays accept. Just not enough high-level upside and firepower
I’d actually argue that the Rays would be the only team in the majors who would recognize value in the Crew’s farm system where others didn’t/wouldn’t.
They obviously don’t have a top 10 system but there are some serious potential MLB difference makers. Just look at Davis, Gennett, Peralta, and Nelson the past few years. None of them broke the Top 100 list (until Nelson last year) and they’re all playing solid baseball. That being said, I really don’t see Price ending up in Milwaukee.
Braves!
I’m realistically going to with the boring answer…Dodgers
Yeah, I know it’s not the Braves.
Fun day so far!
Cubs haha
Crazy day so far!
A’s!!! LOL
Yes! haha
You think it’s a joke now, but just wait.
Pirates! Please =(
Dodgers????? Hopefully……..
Cards… gotta be
is there some kind of Best Rotation prize that they’re fighting with the A’s for?
not any more. I mean you did read the news already today right?
If the Cards are doing anything, it better be for a real #4 HR guy. Otherwise it’s gonna be just wishing and hoping that Tavares is ready to step up now that he’s the (hopefully) full time RF.
I mean when your SS is your HR leader, something is wrong with the offense.
Tell that to the Rockies
…..ok, not the best example
Let me fix Dave’s response:
“I mean when your SS is Jhonny Peralta and is your HR leader….”
Dear lord please don’t go to the brewers
and hopefully Ned doesn’t get hosed
Marlins have been so quiet! This has to be the team come on!
I was JUST thinking the exact same thing. They’ve got the prospects.
I knew the purpose of all of these Sox moves was to land Price…(lol)
Naw, it’s to land Stanton 😛
Despite their reputation for not hanging onto players, the Marlins almost never trade players midseason that are having good years. Anibal Sanchez is about the only exception. Hanley Ramirez, for example, was having a career worst year when he was traded.
I think realistically whether it’s today or in the offseason, a deal of Cespedes, Craig, Kelly, and a few prospects would make the Marlins heavily consider dealing Stanton.
Pirates?
within 3 minutes of the tweet its on MLBTR. Great work guys, you OWN the trade deadline!!!
They owned the Winter Meetings, too!
I’ll say the angels or the orioles
Angels with what prospects?
It would have to involve a 3 team trade
They could move some MLB Ready talent with a few prospects. They have some good bats that they could deal.
It would have to start with Skaggs and Cron, because there isn’t much else to trade.
Yomiuri Giants!!!
Jays!!!!
I really see Pirates being a front runner here.
Minor, bethancourt for David Price
it’s going to take a lot more than that, as talented as Minor is.
Plus Sims, Hale, Salcedo, and Caratini at least
Lets go Dodgers………..
Pirates… Won’t surprise me if Marte, Glasnow, Locke, etc. for Price and Jennings.
Why Jennings?
Oh nevermind I see you included Marte in the package
Well just taking a guess. Because the Pirates have been linked to Byrd and Bonifacio. Just would make sense to me.
how bout including ALvarez to take over at 1B since he cannot field at 3B
Rays won’t and/or shouldn’t deal Jennings….keep dreaming
Marlins brought marisnick, could it be a Yelich deal looming
with the cardinals giving away major league talent for lackey………..they really could still be in the mix. Not likely I know…but you never can be too sure
I think the rays would have to think the rays, would have to think hard about an offer of taveras, Shelby Miller and another prospect. Taveras and Miller were both highly regarded prospects.
Tampa should hold firm on Seager
No way they get rid of Seager, he is one of the few hitters on the Mariners that is decent
Think he meant Corey Seager (Dodgers).
I agree with this. I just can’t imagine a Dodgers deal that doesn’t include 2 of the big 3 and if I as the Rays it would be Seager and one of the others.
Buckle up, here we go!!!! Can’t even begin to guess the return onthis one.
It’s gonna be the Dodgers, outside shot Mariners. Tampa won’t trade within division and Pirates cannot afford him next year.
Dodgers, be ready to kiss Pederson and Seager goodbye.
Bucs could always trade him in the offseason
Pederson yes…….Seager doubtful. Urias….hopefully not. Pederson, Lee, Guerrero and lower level prospects to TB
Yelich for price? They brought up Marisnick from the minors
Way to quit on your fans, Rays.
The haul back will be too good to pass up!
So how does Madden and the other 24 guys feel in the midst the great run they’re on?
“Life goes on, it’s apart of the business”
They quit on their fan base, bottom line.
And wait ’til you see the can of quit the players are gonna drop on management and ownership after Price is gone.
It’s sad really. They’re the hottest team in baseball.
Just get to the dance and anything can happen, as has been proven over and over.
I wouldn’t really call what they have a “fan base.”
they’re not making the mistake Atlanta made last year. We should have traded McCann mid-season, at least we would have gotten more for him than we did.
They have plenty of pitching, he’s gone anyways. If the return is right, so be it.
Not like they’ve traded him, officially, yet.
If they had enough fans to sell out playoff games, they wouldn’t need to build their business model on selling high priced talent for prospects.
The mystery team has got this.
Billy Beane, you know what to do.
The Tigers are infamous for being the mystery team that swoops in at the last minute and picks up high-profile players. Unfortunately it seems highly unlikely in this situation haha
This may not seem so crazy after all… GO GET ‘EM DD!!!
Josh Donaldson for David Price. 🙂 Nothing would surprise me now.
Pirates. They have the most young talent to give.
Marlins have more pitching prospects
I don’t see the Marlins mentioned in any rumors. The Rays could also flip the Pirates young bats for pitching just like the Cubs will likely do in the future.
they have been in the SP rumor mill since 2 nights ago. They are quiet about it since teams want Stanton, Yelich and or Kolek and Heaney
You think they would give up Stanton for a rental in Price? That’s steep. Although hasn’t Stanton indicated he won’t resign anyways?
Doesn’t make it right to give it all up. I don’t want Price as a Pirate fan
please no Dodgers
Could it be that the A’s moved on John Lester of giving up their cleanup hitter because of David Price heading to the Halos? The Halos have some pieces to leverage upon despite the many doubters.
ROTFL, no they don’t.
Join a weak divison that can be easy stolen with good starting pitching
and Ruben Amaro is out eating a cheesesteak!
Good. I don’t trust him with trades.
He just traded Byrd, so at least he did something…Although idk if the return will be anything good.
Yankees!
the best move the Phillies can make is to fire him
…Cron and Santiago for the base of the trade as one.
A DH and a back-end starter is a weak base.
I guess Dan but you guys are loaded in the OF with 3 young talented starters already in the bigs. Price would put you guys as a favorite to win the division. The downside is obviously he may not want to stay there long term.
.
We could win the division as we’re constructed now. Liriano and Cole could lead this team to a division title. The moves Stl made don’t scare me, and Milwaukee is slowly falling back. If Marte returns strong from injury or, God forbid, Pedro Alvarez gets his head out of his rear end, then I really like our chances.
As a Cubs fan I am definitely rooting for you guys to take it.
Thank you, you’re Cubs are certainly part of the reason I want to hold onto a large majority of the prospects Pit currently enjoys. The Cubs are going to very very good in a few years
If the Pirates, Cardinals, and Cubs can all hold onto their top prospects, the NL Central is going to be chock full of star power in 2 years.
Rangers for Odor ++ another ace for 2015 and Profar to play second next year. The Rays can flip zobrist.
Braves are being very quiet. Is about to happen!!
Um, no.
If the Tigers trade for Price, I wonder what message Verlander will have for the A’s now?
That would be a scary rotation.
But not because of Verlander… lol
Watch mystery team emerge aka Angels
Angels not in on price
So they say.
Yes, LAA has offered the Rays their newly discovered mystery prospects. Rays won’t know who they are until after the deal is done.
They could unload a bat from their top heavy offense.
Two hours left.
I wonder what the Cubs will get for Bonafacio?
Dodgers please trade for price, keep him out of the AL west, Angels have a good thing going with cespedes gone.
Dodgers don’t need another “Ace” in their rotation.
Just dont want price in the AL west, thats all.
Then Angels have actually played very well against Price.
The rich get richer, the Doggers are trying to buy a pennant, those who have gets!
What else are teams supposed to do?
Barney for price?
If Im the Rays I ask for Kemp and one or two of their top prospects!
You don’t know how this works, do you? The Rays don’t have the money for Kemp.
and a truckload of cash. make that two
Here comes Cleveland!!!
The Giants should go after Chase Utley he lives in the Bay area, and they need someone at second.
I would be very surprised if Dodgers acquire Price. I can see them trading one of their 3 top prospects, but seems like the Rays want at least 2. Maybe the Dodgers should try and see what the price is for Reds’ Latos before going all in on Price.
Just curious, if the Dodgers happen to trade 2 of the 3, which is the one you’re hoping they hold onto?
Seager
Seager or Urias. I’m leaning towards Urias.
the one would be URIASEAGER hes good wouldnt want to trade him
Seager
Starting in CF for your Tampa Bay Rays – Joc Pederson!
Or a cost controlled, team friendly, proven 5 WAR player in Starling Marte
I don’t think we’re going to create a hole in our outfield.
Harrison will be put out there and Lambo could be called up to fill a bench role.
No, not Pederson! Damn you, Ned!
at least it’s not Seager or Urias. They don’t have room in that outfield for him anyway, unless they unload some contracts
its ok man we dont have room for him .. Urias and seager should be the only ones staying
Of the three, Pederson easily trails Seager and Urias.
Nick C. Smyly. Robbie Ray …all in play for Price???
Boom Pederson and Urias are headed to TAMPA!!
Clayton Kershaw 1.77 ERA
zack Greinke 2.67 ERA
David Price 3.13 ERA
Josh Beckett 2.78 ERA
Ryu 3.43 ERA
PLEASE NED DO IT
Gammons tweeted the Dodgers saying they are not in on Price.
10 minutes ago….Dodgers all in……Now Dodgers are out…..10 more minutes til their back in.
As I thought, I don’t think the Dodgers were ever back in it. I think the source (Bowden) was just wrong. Dodgers have been adamant in not trading their top trio of prospects.
We need a starter and a bullpen arm and we are WS favorites Ned is just sitting there
It’s boring but Price probably stays with Tampa
He goes to Pittsburgh. That’s my prediction.
What would Pittsburgh give?
I see Pittsburgh offering a package of Alvarez, Allen Hanson, Harold Ramirez, and Jose Tabata
They’ve got more to give than the Tigers and Mariners.
Tigers get Price and Miller would be awesome; sell the farm DD and Porcello & Iglesias if needed also
Rays want 2/3 from the dodgers , dodgers aint budging
the one person who get talk about most might not even get traded.
Actually it would be sweet though if there is a 3 way trade between the rays, dodgers, and mariners.
Dodgers- David Price and Nick Franklin
Mariners- Corey Seager, Ben Zobrist, some starting pitcher from the dodgers or rays
Rays- Taijuan Walker, DJ Peterson, Joc Peterson, and dustin ackley
dodgers need pitching help not IF help. there no need for franklin with all the IF dodgers have and dodgers just trade for one
I think david price is a pretty good pitching help
but there no need franklin a year ago yes but this year no
You are right. That is true.. But I know the dodgers love his potential. They could put him out in the outfield to possibly replace kemp down the road
if they traded pederson yes but if the dont then there no need for him
Any clue who the Rays are asking from the Pirates?
Guessing Glasnow and Bell’s names are getting talked about. I don’t know who is untouchable for the Pirates, NH sounds like he is playing this close to the vest.
When it comes to Price, really nobody except major league guys should be untouchable. So Polanco/Cole are probably out cause they are part of our team now.
Glasnow is super elite prospect. I’ve heard people say his upside is better than Taillon or even Cole (#1 overall pick). He’d be the centerpiece. Add Bell or Meadows for another elite prospect. Maybe a catcher like Tony Sanchez, who should be in the majors but is blocked by Martin. Pirates farm system is literally 10-12 names deep, all B+ level talents or better, so the combinations are nearly endless.
I have no evidence but I’m thinking Reese McGuire could make or break a Price deal. A left hitting catcher who can hit and defend his position, pretty rare bird.
I’m guessing Glasnow and Marte as the start.
Pirates all in. Let’s acquire Price and make the biggest splash.
Pirates all in. Let’s acquire Price and make the biggest splash.
Hard for me to see how the Pirates make this work, no way PIT will pay price 20 MM next year and no way TB is including cash in the deal.
They could trade him in the offseason.
True it just seems like a very risky move to trade your top prospects for a pitcher that will have to be traded in the off-season.
Yeah I hear ya. There is also risk in prospects not panning out, and reward in taking risks. I just hope he doesn’t go to the Mariners or Tigers.
If the Pirates can’t afford a one year $20 million deal, they should get out of the game. I can understand them not being able to cover 3-4 year contracts for that money but one year? Especially with Liriano and Volquez coming off the books and all that increased attendance and TV money they didn’t spend…if money is an issue, that really speaks poorly of the team’s ownership.
They should be able to afford him. Volquez ($5MM), Liriano ($6MM), Wandy ($7.5MM), Barmes ($2MM) are all coming off the books. That’s $20.5MM right there. Martin ($8.5MM) is scheduled to come off the books too, but let’s hope not. That on top of the TV money, Pirates can get a deal done.
The Pirates are still going to have to replace all the above named players too, Martin being the most important.
Pirates are not a WS contender with price
ned wants to keep his prospects so i doubt we will see any traded if we do ill be surprise
Haha Detroit
Wise, well-spoken and very detailed. Would up-vote 1000x if I could.
I’m sorta feeling like the longer this drags on the less likely anyone’s gonna pony up what they want with the teams that have the biggest payroll space and prospects are out of the running.
That or the Rays will end up getting lowballed 5 minutes before the deadline because they keep asking for too much and have to take SOMETHING to save face.
What do people think about this trade: It wouldn’t be a huge splash, but I think down the road it would help the dodgers and mariners significantly.. mariners should trade John Paxton and Taijuan Walker for Joc Peterson and Corey Seager.. Yes Paxton and walker have potential, but I think seager and Peterson are legit.. Or Taijuan Walker for the two guys
Dodgers would never do this. They have plenty of pitchers in the system. They need seager to play 3b in the future.
no because why trade for a walker when they have a bunch of prospects to chose from down the road and dodgers need a true CF and could use seager at 3rd
nah
The Dodgers do not need Walker since they already have Urias. There is no way the Dodgers trade Seager and Pederson unless they are getting David Price and I still think they wouldn’t do that trade. They can afford to give away Pederson and Urias given their depth at both positions but Seager is their future 3B once Uribe’s contract expires after next year
they dont need walker because dodgers are loaded with pitching prospects. their top 20 is like 70% pitching
Yeah my point was made with Urias saying they already have a stacked rotation with a top pitching prospect so no need for Walker. If they deal their specs it is to be for a stud like David Price. But the dodgers are smart by staying put to keep their farm
First off, their names are James Paxton and Joc Pederson.
Second, all 4 of the guys you mentioned are indeed legitimate prospects.. but I fail to see how it would necessarily help both teams long term. And then you backtrack and offer the same deal but without Paxton, as if he’s negligible?
Pederson AND Seager for Walker just makes no sense whatsoever for the Dodgers. The risk involved with young pitchers is far too great to trade a sure-thing prospect like Pederson, who projects to be a 30-30 type player in a few years, AND a potential superstar middle infielder like Seager for a guy who’s already dealt with shoulder issues just this year.
One thing that would be cool about your crazy hypothetical trade would be the chance that brothers, Kyle and Corey Seager, could play on the same Major League team.

No way. Walker has actually played in the big leagues and has done alright. For all we know, Joc Pederson is the next Domonic Brown.
These kind of “challenge” trades rarely happen. Too risky; and the scouts, and gm, that put their weight behind drafting these players are still around to make the case for not trading their babies. I like the idea though, Seattle needs bats and everyone else in the league needs more pitching. But, LA will need a SS after this trade.
Prospect wise, I think the Pirates being “all in” means any name is on
the table. Price has the contract and ability that you’re willing to
trade anybody for. I’m glad Huntington recognizes that and didn’t waste
his assets on a rental like Lester or middle rotation guy like Kennedy/Lackey or *ugh* a reliever. This is why you build a farm system – for these moments when a truly elite talent comes on the market and you can bid on him without totally wrecking your current team or the future.
No way the Pirates can afford Price next season. They wouldn’t even risk extending a QO to AJ Burnett last off-season.
That could be true, but do we really need to point out the difference between Burnett at $15mil and Price at $20mil? Seems obvious
The Pirates and Rays have virtually identical payrolls, how is PIT going to fit him into the budget when his salary is exactly what is forcing the Rays to trade him.
Pit has better fans.
The salary isn’t why the Rays are trading him. They are trading him because he has one year left and they know they can’t offer him 4-6 year extension so they’d rather get prospects now than lose him and get nothing. Same as they did with Shields, Kazmir and Garza.
And Pittsburgh should have a bigger payroll tbh. We draw twice as many fans as they do and I’m pretty sure our tv deal is better.
That’s because that was AJ Burnett.
That’s because that was AJ Burnett.
Big difference on committing 12.5 mill on Burnett at the end of his career compared to 18-20 mill for Price in the prime of his career. They can afford it.
Big difference on committing 12.5 mill on Burnett at the end of his career compared to 18-20 mill for Price in the prime of his career. They can afford it.
Brandon Cumpton, Harold Ramirez, Jacoby Jones, and Barret Barnes for Price and 3.5 million towards Price’s arbitration…how can Tampa turn down that type of talent haul?
dodgers love august trades so at this point that where the dodgers make a trade. i dont see one happening for them before the deadline. but anything can happen
I am not one to bemoan fans but this is really not that hard. Trading is a gamble. You are betting that what you trade will of the same value or less value than what you are trading for. The other team is hoping for the opposite. Prospects are wonderful if they work out. If they do not, they are role players at best. The most recent trade to consider as a hallmark is that of Shields/Davis for Myers/Oderizzi. Everyone “knew” that Myers would hit. He did and then struggled as per the baseball learning curve. He will be back most likely. However, right now, the Royals look like they have a better chance at the playoffs than the Rays. So, who won? You give to get. Every team overvalues their prospects. There are true studs out there. But to suggest that just because a kid looks great while killing minor league pitching, he will walk into the majors and blow up, is silly. I guess my point is before we go all reactionary one way or the other, we need to realize that the ultimate goal is a ring. Period.
a ring is the goal but doesnt hurt to keep prospects, look what happen last time dodgers use the farm . dodgers made martin decent catcher, kershaw future hall famer, loney once big time player and matt kemp. plus great 2nd/3rd pitcher in bill before the injures
I just read it’s the Pirates and Glasnow is the center piece…
Makes sense.
WE will see but so many rumors
I really hope this is true. As long as we didnt ship the farm along with Tyler!
It’s going to hurt
Angels give up skaggs, cron, kendrick conger?
Don’t know how the Tigers could possibly have enough to entice the Rays, unless Tampa REALLY believes JD Martinez’ breakout is legitimate. Maybe JD Martinez, Jose Iglesias, Drew Smyly for Price and Zobrist. Not a bad gamble for 4 years of control for a potential OF slugger. Zobrist is a great fit for the Tigers as he can play both SS and LF, splitting time for Suarez and Rajai Davis. Tigers also need another Switch Hitter/Lefty Bat and he would not be not just a rental. Price replaces Scherzer next season and extends the window for another year. If they can’t get it done by next year, let all the free agents walk with QOs (Porcello, Zobrist, Price) and start the rebuild. Again, Tampa will have to REALLY like Martinez for this to be possible.
While the Tigers have more pitching than hitting prospects, the Rays are still loaded with pitching. It’s their offense that has struggled to create Runs, which is why I think 4 years of Martinez may appeal to them. ONLY if they believe in him. With the trades of Craig and Cespedes, this is setting a trend that teams aren’t getting 6 years of hitters, but teams are willing to part with 2-4 years of control of a proven one.
More like that deal for Price. Not Price & Zobrist.
I think you may see Price & Zobrist for:
Moya, Farmer, and Ray with Smyly and Iglesias
For the Tigers to get it done the trade will start with Smyly, Robbie Ray, and a PTBNL (Jose Iglesias after he comes off the DL)… The Rays would have to throw in Zobrist if they wanted to talk about Nick.
It doesn’t seem likely either team will find a medium ground on the deal unless the Rays really love some of the Tigers farm hands.
As I said in my edit, Rays need hitting prospects, not pitching. They have Matt Moore coming back and are great at developing arms. The offense has sputtered though. With the trades of Craig and Cespedes, selling teams are apparently coveting hitters with a couple years of team control and MLB experience and potential for more. JD Martinez at 26 and 4 years of team control fits that bill. DD made the mistake a few years back of believing in Brennan Boesch breakout and turned down trade offers for star players because of it. I doubt he wants to make that mistake again.
Probably to the A’s. They need more pitching!
David Price and Ben Zobrist for Alen Hanson, Tyler Glasnow, Luis Heredia and Clay Holmes. Get ‘er done.
I would do this in a heartbeat if I was the Pirates. Not sure it would be enough for the Ray though. Not to mention I wouldn’t want Zobrist if I was the Pirates. He would have no where to play. The outfield is set, Walker is entrenched at 2B, Mercer has been awesome at SS since June. Harrison/Pedro at 3B. Can Zobrist play 1B? I’d much rather replace Heredia and Holmes for Josh Bell and get Price/McGee.
Zobrist can play anywhere. He’s Zorilla. Seriously though, he can play all 7 positions behind the pitcher. And has. He’s an albino Josh Harrison and better.
If the Cardinals come out of nowhere and make this deal. I don’t know what I will do. Wainwright/Price/Wacha/Lackey/Masterson would be unbeatable.
No it wouldn’t.
Would rival the Dodgers rotation though.
Who would be better?
All depends. The Phillies had an “unbeatable” rotation a few years ago. They got beat.
Everyone can be beat.
Never said they were unbeatable. I asked what rotation would be better?
Everyone’s beatable.
Well,
He said “unbeatable” to which I replied, “No it wouldn’t”
So you’re “who would be better” I assumed meant who I thought would be “unbeatable”.
Hardly. One or two injuries or a hot Dodgers or Nationals pitching staff and it’s all for nothing.
We knocked both of them out over the last 2 years … they won’t take us lightly.
Lynn is better than Masterson .. but they might be trading him
So Shelby Miller is in the pen?
I would assume Miller is part of the package to Tampa along with
Taveras or Martinez.
So Shelby Miller is in the pen?
Not unbeatable. Damn good, but not unbeatable. Wacha’s not coming back till September, and both Lackey and Masterson are up-and-down. Still, Waino and Price at the top is a serious 1-2 punch.
Hoping to the Pirates for Marte+ or Dodgers for Pederson+…..come on….no wammies no wammies….stop
Price and Zobrist to Tigers for Castellanos and Smyly would be pretty good for both sides.
You’re crazy. It would take far more on the Tigers’ end.
Fair enough, don’t know much about the Tigers Farm System.
I’m guessing it would take Iglesias, Smyly, and either J.D. Martinez or 1 or 2 prospects with promising bats.
Lifetime Pirates fan here. I would LOVE to see David Price in a Buccos uniform. Frankie Liriano is back to his 2013 form now, Cole is close to returning, Volquez has been solid. Add Price as your #1 and a rotation of Price/Liriano/Cole/Volquez with Locke/Vanimal/Morton vying for the 5th spot would be amazing. It’s almost TOO MUCH starting pitching, but Worley has an option left, Morton has been sketchy, and Locke is still a question mark. The Pirates need that true-blue #1 starter to match up against the Wainwrights, Kershaws, etc.
Josh Bell will be a top-notch power-hitting, switch-hitting first baseman. He is the real deal. Tampa will obviously want him, they will want one of Kingham or Glasnow, and they will want another top prospect. I can’t imagine them trading Price without getting 3 top 100 prospects and an additional MLB-ready player (Tabata). Perhaps the Rays also send a reliever and the Bucs kill two birds. As a Pirates fan, I am ready to do this. The window for a small market team is precariously slim, no matter how great the farm system is. The NL Central is winnable. The NL Pennant is winnable. 2014 is the year to do it, Neal.
After 21 str8 years of losing, I’m with you Jeff.
Cards are still in?! That rotation would be nuts.
Lol
Wainwright
Price
Lackey
Wacha
Lynn
Woah, no Masterson? Lol
Lol no idea what they would do with him probably long relief
That would be an insane rotation, no doubt. Don’t think they need Price though, honestly. Rotation without him seems pretty solid.
Newly acquired Masterson to the bullpen haha
they gave up a AA OF … lol
would cost them Oscar and Shelby Miller and maybe more.
lol could you imagine if cards really got price haha crazy
Cardinals still can’t hit
Cmon Dodgers make that move.
no thank you. we need to think about future not just the now
The Dodgers payroll currently sits at 229 Million. The fans want to see it climb to 300 million before the end of 2015. lol.
Im tired of being second fiddle in the NL with the NLCS. I want to be in a WS already. We’ve been talking about the future for 20+ years
but getting the best pitching doesnt mean anything. you can have the best pitching and still do nothing. dodgers are fine where their at they just need a few piece one not being another ace
Ryu scares me late in the season
dodgers should be fine. dodgers know what to expect and will handle ryu the right way
The mariners should’ve traded for Lester and lackey
So many trades I can’t remember who needs what anymore!
haha I agree, deals are going down! Going to be an exciting 2nd half
Everyone needs pitching. Pretty much sums it up.
Tis the season.
Seriously, this is like Christmas for a baseball fan.
If it isn’t the Tigers I’ll be absolutely stunned
Tigers lol
Do they even have the pieces to pull it off?
Not likely
I’m hearing it would have to be a three team trade for the Tigers to pull it off.
Mariners must be one of the teams also involved going to the Rays & Tigers (if needing a backup first baseman to come off the bench/backup by Smoak, Montero, Hart, or Morrison if dealt elsewhere to a non playoff team).
No one wants Smoak, Montero, Hart or Morrison.
Not even the Astros. Romero, Miller, or Franklin as better option.
Nothing would surprise me with everything thats gone down today, but typically I would agree with you that they don’t have much value if any.
You can’t tell me the Rays wouldn’t take Smyly, JD Martinez, and Iglesias for Price
Probably not. Smyly just isn’t that good, Iggy is hurt and JD is having a career year but was really mediocre previously.
I can tell you that with near 90% certainty, Iglesias has a question mark with his bat plus he’s injured…sure Martinez is hot but to expect him to continue his tear isn’t realistic. Smyly would be a good start though
yes. NICK C!! and Smyly and a prospect.
Must be the Mariners as they are going hard after Price if a third team is also involved like the Tigers. You never know after Cabrera was traded to the Nationals from the Indians.
I said it before…. the Cardinals gave away MLB talent…. still have a lot of chips to trade for price
Take em’ for all they’re worth Tampa.
HOW are the Cardinals still in on it? What would that rotation even BE?
Wainright, Lynn, Price, Lackey, Masterson?
I’m not convinced that isn’t overkill.
No Wacha?
Hes on the DL for now.
I thought he was coming back end of August.
True. By then the Cards may have realized Masterson isn’t all that good.
why rush him back this year with that rotation? Let him cool out the rest of the year, get his shoulder back and maybe be the 7th inning guy if anything for the rest of the year.
Wacha to wheh he comes back. Filthy rotation
semantics, but Lynn would definitely be behind Price, maybe even Lackey in that rotation. Waino/Price would be the best two headed monster in baseball.
well it’d almost definitely be four games out of seven that you’d have to believe could be won with 2 runs or less, which seems to be what the Cards are capable of.
Tavares + Martinez = Price. Masterson to eighth inning.
I think the Pirates get Price.
Tigers could get Price if they give up Castellanos, Smyly, and Moya. Or something like that.
Smyly still on the mound so unlikely he’s being traded. Castellanos still in lineup too
OK, Tampa trade David Price and a RP to Pittsburgh.
The Pirates offer a combination of these players:
OF Josh Bell
SS Alen Hanson, OF Harold Ramirez
SP Tyler Glasnow, SP Nick Kingham, SP Jameson Taillon
P Clay Holmes, P Adrian Sampson
OF Jose Tabata
The Rays can have Josh Bell, Hanson or Ramirez, Jose Tabata, and one each of Glasnow/KIngham/Taillon and Holmes/Sampson.
Does this get it done, and what is the final package to Tampa?
I think that would get it done, and maybe net them another piece, if they have a reliever to spare.
I would think Bell, Hanson, Glasnow, Sampson, and Tabata would be enough to get Price and a choice of bullpen piece. I would imagine the Rays would want Glasnow over Taillon due to the injury. Kingham is closer to the majors than both other guys, but Glasnow is probably the most immediate impact arm of the group. I know this is a lot to give back for the Pirates, but I don’t expect Tampa to move Price for anything less than this type of package.
Yeah that’s basically what I’ve been envisioning. Bell for sure plus one of their elite pitchers (probably Glasnow although Taillon and Kingham are more major league ready) plus a good secondary pitching prospect (Sampson seems to be a hot name, Heredia is also a name to watch) plus one of our OFers (Ramirez/Jones/Barnes). I think its Bell or Meadows to be honest, one but not both. Also, not sure the Rays catching situation but the Pirates have a couple good ones (Tony Sanchez, McGuire down in A ball) they could throw in.
If the Rays toss in an extra piece, I’d like to see it be a reliever, preferably Boxberger.
I’d be inclined to ask for Boxberger as well. He would fit in as a solid right-handed reliever. The reason I didn’t expect the Pirates to chase down Andrew Miller is because he is left-handed, and Watson/Wilson are set in as the 1-2 punch as lefties from the bullpen.
Yeah I never understood why the rumors were so hot for the Pirates looking to get Bastardo or Miller (lefties.). They need a 7th inning shutdown guy. Watson pitches the 8th. It makes no sense to have a lefty shutdown guy in the 7th and then another follow him in the 8th. You’d want a righty so you go Right-Left-Right 7-9, right?
Rays wouldn’t trade Boxberger with how well he’s doing for the team right now. They’d probably be inclined to the throw in someone like Gomes.

Love the wheeling and dealing, makes for a much more interesting run to the playoffs.
Could Price and Zobrist potentially be packaged together? Or would that make no sense on the Rays part?
if you trade price your pretty much out of the playoffs so yes Zobrist will likely be traded
The return would have to astronomical. Zobrist has a very affordable option left for 2015.
I have reason to believe that if you packed together Price and Zobrist that the Pirates would have the prospects to get it done and be willing to part with them
They do, the problem is Price and Zobrist will cost about $27MM next season. Are the Pirates ready to take that kind of jump in payroll?
I think they would make the move if it meant giving them an edge over the Brewers and the Cards.
I would be really surprised to see the Pirates do that. They’ve positioned themselves well for sustained success. A trade like that gives them a 2 year window.
I don’t understand why Pirates fans are hot after Zobrist. Don’t get me wrong, I love the Zorilla but he seems kinda extraneous unless your 110% committed to moving either Marte, Walker, or Alvarez. I know he plays SS but that’s not really his best position. Besides, for the prospects we’d have to add to get Zobrist, I’d rather just take my chances with Marte or Mercer.
Mariners can use Price & Zobrist. If Price goes to the Cardinals, wonder if Shelby Mikler, Zobrist, and John Jay/Peter Bourjos (coming off the bench) would make a good three team trade.
Alvarez, Marte, Glasnow, and Hansen for Price and Zobrist
doubt that’s enough
I don’t believe Alvarez is on the block in any deal. I love Josh Harrison, but he is not an everyday third baseman. The Pirates depth of outfielders in the farm system is more than enough to offset the trade of Marte, but I’m not sure Marte’s trade value is very high right now.
I don’t see why Tampa would want Pedro anyway. He should be a 1B but he isn’t and who knows if he can be converted? I guess they could use him as a DH but still… I dunno, I wouldn’t mind trading Pedro because I don’t think he’ll ever be the player his rabid Bucco fans wish he was but I just don’t see this being the deal to trade him in.
I’m not ready to give up on El Torro yet. I’ve seen too many players struggle as Pirates at this point in their careers (Aramis Ramirez, Jose Bautista, Brandon Moss) and then blossom once they move on to another franchise. Granted, A-Ram was fantastic in 2001 and then struggled in 2002 before being dealt to Chicago. Bautista was one of the worst starting ML position players in 2007, was dealt in 2008 in basically a roster-clearing move, and then turned into Babe Ruth in Toronto as he turned 30. Brandon Moss was also terrible in Pittsburgh, and now at 30 he is a premier power-hitter. Alvarez is 27 and signed through 2017. His throwing issue scares me but I think giving up on his bat one season removed from leading the NL in homeruns would be a grave mistake.
Why are people still speculating Taveras could be traded?
1. Mozeliak literally laughed last night about the rumors Taveras was in trade talks.
2 . They just traded Craig to make room for Taveras to play every day.
If a Price deal requires Taveras, the Cardinals are obviously not involved.
unless it brought Wil Meyers as well
Just no….
I wasn’t being realistic. Well…yes, I was. I’m sure the Cards would that. Sounds like the opposite of what the Rays are trying to do. So, no, not serious.
Although I think it is crazy people are still speculating he would be involved (because of Mozeliak’s comments) why do Cardinals fans think its laughable for the Rays to ask for Taveras? Price is an ace, and not just a rental at this point since he is under contract for a whole nother season. If people think the Rays are going to settle on a package without including a number 1 or 2 out of the top 3 prospects out of a clubs system, they need to check their noggin.
Cards for Piscotty, Miller, and a farther down piece. Cards going for it this year and next. No place for Piscotty, Price a big upgrade on Miller.
Not getting Price without OT. Piscotty and Miller not really enough. Is Miller really any type of upgrade over Helllickson next year? Very debatable.
I guess early indication would be if Miller pulled from 12:40 start at last minute.
Price to oakland
Pirates are the best fit
Hope the fence-rider Royals are enjoying watching everybody get better. But them.
A flurry of updates, then nothing…hope that means details are being hammered out. The Rays need to decide quick, cause if Price goes it only makes sense that Zobrist (and Joyce) go too.
This is the kind of trade deadline i’ve dreamed of my whole life.
I’m not a Yankees fan, but do the Yankees have the pieces that would entice the Rays enough to consider trading within the division?
exactly what I was just writing. Potential leg of a 3 team deal?
Zobrist to NY?
Mariners?
Theoretically, but it would completely hollow out their farm. Other teams could outbid as well. NY has “enough” but other teams have more.
So, the Yanks are in, but they could only be the 3rd team in a 3 team deal, correct? They surely don’t have the talent to land Price by themselves
I thought Price wouldn’t go to the Yankees because he does not want to shave his beard?
Does he have a say?
I doubt they have the pieces to get him anyways.
What are they going to do, strap him to chair and bring in a barber?
He doesn’t have a no-trade or 10/5 rights, so he has no choice. He might not resign with them, but he can’t not go.
Lol. I know man. But what happens when he shows up with a beard and refuses to budge? Fine him, bench him, suspend him? Moot beard discussion though as it is never happening 🙂 That rule stinks though.
Eh, I can understand it. He’d shave it. He’d be fined if he didn’t.
Watch the Angels swoop in on this.
Won’t happen
Says who? They could easily do what the A’s did to get Lester.
What the hell could the Yankees offer?
Sorry, I can’t imagine the yanks having enough to get him unless a 3rd team is involved.
Oh please, the yankees aren’t in on this stop it
A’s are in before the Yanks land him
A’s have nobody in the farm. The Yankees farm is a #1 compared to the A’s
hence the joke. neither team will get him
Didn’t seem like one lol
Is Price old enough to qualify for a spot on the Yankee’s roster?
I don’t think he’s collecting Social Security yet.
The Yankees pitching staff is actually quite young. I don’t see them getting Price but if they did I believe he would be there 2nd or 3rd oldest starter.
Okay I’m not believing anyone is in or out.. I’ll wait till 1pm
Yankees!?
Do the Yankees have anything to offer at all? They could probably trade every single person in the farm system and still not be enough
What are the Yankees offering? I know they have some prospects but nothing that makes it worth dealing Price within the division.
I could also ask that about the Tigers.
Agreed, although the price would be a bit lower since the tigers are in a different division.
Lol. Good luck on that one Cashman.
Price/Zobrist for Franklin/Walker/Wilson and 2 (possibly 3) out of Sanchez/Diaz/Marlette/Guerrero would make me happy.
As long as they can keep Paxton I will be happy!
Me too. Keep Paxton/Peterson and I’ll be happy.
Probably another hoax that the Yankees are in on Price.
This may be a bit off topic but….did RAJ forget that today is the trade deadline?
He’s still insisting on top 3 prospects for Byrd. lol
I’ve said it once before and I will say it again, RAJ is overplaying his hand, If he doesn’t move Byrd he could become like Cliff Lee and get injured next year and lose a lot of his trade value. Right now something is better then nothing especially for aging pieces which don’t fit into the clubs longterm plans.
Agreed, down to 30mins left for RAJ to save his job!
It’s RAJ…Even if he makes a trade he loses his job because he will get fleeced so badly.
“Tigers appear to be the frontrunner”…
As badly as I want the Pirates to get Price, I have to admit building a package around Smyly is awfully attractive. Not sure Detroit can offer the number of prospects but Pirates can but a potential front line starter ready now? Yeah, Tigers got them beat there.
The Yankees would have a chance only if the GM of the Rays had the trade logic used in MLB The Show.
This is coming from a die-hard Yankees fan.
What the heck do the tigers have to trade to get Price?
Castellanos and Smyly
Fair deal.
Where would Castellanos play? 3B is locked up by Longo, Loney’s on first. The OF maybe?
DH probably once Myers gets back.
It would most likely be a three team trade from my understanding. But Smyly would be a good start.
Mariners must be the third team if interested in Price by sending Paxton or Walker, maybe Ackley (if Austin Jackson will be DFA), and other piece or two to the Rays & Tigers.
Smyly. The guy is a frontline #2 potentially #1 starter in waiting. And he’s major league ready now so no waiting 2-3 years for an A ball kid to be ready. Granted, Detroit’s secondary pieces are kinda blah but building a trade around him is a really good deal.
#2 seems like the upside for Smyly. Definitely don’t see him as a #1.
This, I’m really hoping its not the Tigers. Doesn’t seem like the right fit for Rays. Rather wait to the off-season if that is the case.
Anyone watching the Tigers game to see if someone gets pulled?
I am.
Nobody pulled yet. Smyly likely to come out but he’s at about 95 pitches or so
He’s out. Al Al is pitching right now
Smyly out but only because he gave up 4 runs/11 hits and 95 pitches in 5 innings
Smyly out but only because he gave up 4 runs/11 hits and 95 pitches in 5 innings
Tigers are the front runners…….until Mo and Neal get back on the phone.
Sounding like a 3way trade…wonder who the third team will be
a’s. this year its always the a’s
Hearing the Pirates are the third team….sounds crazy….no idea who would go where
Pirates would probably be in on Smyly. Wouldn’t have to give up as many prospects and have him for more years of control.
Pirates would probably be in on Smyly. Wouldn’t have to give up as many prospects and have him for more years of control.
Off-topic but Asdrubal Cabera traded to Nats fr SS Walters
Marlins getting Smyly maybe? as a 3rd team
The Tigers have nothing I would want. Martinez, Smyly, Castellanos……while they’re not bad, they’re not enough for Price. Not even all three of them.
Pirates get Smyly, Tigers get Price, Rays get prospects from both?
Tigers get Zobrist, Pirates get Price, Rays get Smyly and prospects for both?
Nvm. Per Joel Sherman: “Sense is Rays won’t move Zobrist before deadline”
I could see Zobrist and Price going in the same trade….likely why its taking so long to sort out here at the end
Dombrowski, Friedman, and Jack Z must be chatting on the phone or video conference about making a three team trade should the Tigers being interested in Taijuan Walker/James Paxton.
Why isn’t Ruben trying to get one of these teams to give up some youngsters for Hamels? Only one of these teams is getting Price.
Because Ruben Amaro.
Andrew Friedman has said in the past that he has always wanted to do a 3-team deal
Andrew Friedman has said in the past that he has always wanted to do a 3-team deal
lol
Rays beat writer (Topkin) saying 3 team deal
Hope it’s the Seattle Mariners getting Price/Smyly & Zobrist.
Zobrist would probably go to the Mariners if he were involved because he hits lefties real well.
What pitcher or offense (if Austin Jackson) would come to the Mariners from the Tigers?
Smyly or Dirks, I’m not a Tigers fan so this is just a guess.
Dirks would be an upgrade over Endy Chavez & Denorfia or Saunders. If Price is heading to the Tigers, will the Mets trade a Colon in less than 20 minutes to the Mariners for Hart/Montero/Smoak/or Morrison?
Nobody wants them.
What about Tailon or Bell after a three way trade between the Rays and Pirates if it happened then goes to the Mets?
Maybe the Cubs to supply the hitting prospects the Rays want in exchange for the pitching prospects Seattle has?
interesting thought
Interesting thought, but I don’t see the cubs unloading hitting prospects for pitching prospects. Cubs would need to land a big MLB arm.
3 team deal for Price sending Price to the Dodgers, Joc Pederson and
Zobrist to Seattle and various players (A/B) from Dodgers and M’s to TB.
The Dodgers are out… move on.
3 team deal Tigers Mariners Rays, could it be like last year where the Tigers get offense, Mariners get Price and Rays get prospects/Smyly?
Who goes to the Tigers from the Mariners if Miller/Smoak/Montero/Morrison/Hart?
What’s the Red Sox pitching rotation look like right now?
Bucholz
Kelly
Workman
Rubby
Webster
Rays prospect Romero possibly involved, would end up being a big deal if that is the case
Price traded to the Pirates for Polanco.
im glad all this dodger getting price talk is over. i really didnt want them to get him in the first place since it meant trading some good prospects
if dodgers really wanted price he would of been a dodger already but dodgers wont give the rays what they want.
20 Minutes someone pull the trigger. I’m tired of hearing about Price.
he might be the most talk guy who doesnt get traded
He’s gone at this point, IMO.
it’s always someone they hype up every year who doesn’t go.
Might the Tigers move JD Martinez in this deal? Mariners want offense..
Rays get Tajuan Walker and Jose Tabata and a lesser prospect from both Bucs and M’s. M’s get Jameson Taillon, Andrew Lambo, and Josh Bell. Bucs get Price and Zobrist.
The Ms would wake up sore in the behind tomorrow morning if they went for that proposal.
Between Taillon, Lambo, and Bell, which of those players might be dealt w/ a player or two from the Mariners to acquire Colon or Cespedes & Napoli?
Has there ever been a four team trade before? Because that could make sense since the Yankees trade with Byrd fell through so they might want to acquire an offensive piece. Joyce of the Rays could always be a possibility? (Yes I know this has virtually no possibility of happening)
Can’t… stop… refreshing…
haha Im with ya 🙂
Per Mark Topkin: “Hearing Ray’s Price is the only Rays player going in the 3-team deal”
well that would be obvious
Not necessarily, it’s been floated about that Zobrist could go also.
They still have a shot at the playoffs. I don’t them doing much.
Man Tigers and Pirates? Tigers and Mariners? Mega trade
report 5 minutes ago was Enny Romero was involved. People were speculating on Zobrist and Joyce too.
Stephen Drew to the Yankees.. weird
Babe Ruth part 2.. Now he will start hitting 40 homers a year.
The Curse of Stephen Drew just doesnt have the same ring to it
My Guess:
Price to Tigers (with contract extension with same $s as what Scherzer rejected)
Scherzer to Seattle
2-3 top prospects and Smyly to Rays.
Why in the world would the Tigers trade Scherzer and Smyly for Price?
Doubt the Tigers give up Scherzer and Smyly just for Price
Gut feeling the pirates will do something.
I think Price is going to either Detroit or Pittsburgh.
Gut feeling the Pirates/Rays/Tigers/Mariners pull off the four team deal if Smoak/Hart/Montero goes to the Pirates or Rays before being traded again next month by being put on waivers.
I think an interesting 3 team deal would be:
Pirates – David Price
Giants – Ben Zobrist, Jose Tabata
Rays – Kyle Crick, Joe Panik, Jameson Taillon, Josh Bell
What do you think?
Not going to happen. Neither of those teams are involved in talks and we’re 10 minutes from the deadline.
I know it won’t happen because Price just went to the Tigers, but it was still fun.
yeah someone posted a source that the Rays were only getting rid of one player.
I wasn’t saying it was actually what was happening, just that it would help all three teams.
Per Ken Rosenthal: “Tigers get Price”
Tigers per Ken Rosenathl
Going to Tigers….wonder who the 3rd team is
Mariners probably
Tigers got Price
Tigers??? Can we just fast-forward to the Tigers/A’s ALCS now please??
Wow this is going to be a huge deal and HAS TO BE A 3 TEAM DEAL
Smyley must be headed to the Mariners w/ Zobrist.
Price to Tigers
Anyone pulled from the Tigers game yet?
I thought I heard Smyly.
yeah he was. at 100 pitches though 20 minutes ago
Smyly had hit 95 pitches, and given up 4er on 11 hits. So yeah, he was pulled
Good question
I know the Rays wanted Smyly earlier today,
Nuclear arms race between Detroit and Oakland?
“Price going to Tigers” via Rosenthal, I just heard
I wonder what the three way will look like.
Jon Heyman says seattle is team 3
Ben zobrist is in it
Austin Jackson and Smyly involved per Heyman
To Seattle?
Austin Jackson to Seattle, Nick Franklin to Tampa
Hope Austin Jackson, Gabriel Guerro, Taijuan Walker, and couple other players goes to the Red Sox for Cespedes & Napoli. That would be a good trade between both teams.
Confirmed per like 10 people
wow tigers just got a lil more ferocious
Jayson Stark says NO Ben Zobrist
Austin Jackson officially pulled from game
Austin Jackson to Seattle and Nick Franklin to Tampa I think.
lol took the guy off the field in the middle of the game.
Assume Rays got a lot more than just Smyly and Franklin…
I would hope so.
not sure where from though… Tigers don’t really have anything. Jackson for Franklin is probably pretty fair so i doubt the Ms are sending much more than one person
Zobrist is a Pirate
Pirates get Zobrist.
