The Phillies have not reached the point of receiving offers or making “specific requests” for packages involving lefty Cole Hamels, Ken Rosenthal of FOX Sports reports (Twitter links). Indeed, the team has had no “meaningful dialogue” regarding Hamels, Rosenthal reports.
That would seem to be in some tension with an early report from Bob Nightengale, which indicated that the Phillies had responded to a Dodger inquiry on the price for Hamels (which was said to be quite steep).
A source tells Rosenthal that a deal involving Hamels is the least likely possibility among the trades that the team is contemplating. That is not a surprising assessment, given that the lefty is currently healthy, productive, relatively young, and under team control for five more years (one via option).

Must be because no one can take RAJ seriously.

Ok we get it, Amaro won’t trade anybody unless they eat all the salary and include nine prospects. I’m not even paying attention to Phillies rumors anymore.
TommyC
Apparently, you *don’t* get it. This is saying the Phillies never asked for the Dodgers top three.
But I guess the Amaro cj has too much momentum to possibly be halted now.
KJ4realz
Seems doubtful Phillies are making any moves before Friday.
TommyC
Bastardo is almost definitely going to be moved and Byrd most likely will be, as well.
Papelbon and Burnett are outside chances with little to nothing in return.
It is Lee, Hamels, Utley and Rollins that are unlikely to be moved by the deadline, and the first two could be moved in August and the offseaosn, respectively.
raltongo 2
Byrd will be gone
KJ4realz
I’m thinking that he and Bastardo will be, but I’m not seeing who they go to and if Amaro can do anything.
I don’t want to see a Pence/Victorino debacle again just because Amaro scrambles around at the last minute.
raltongo 2
Why is it a debacle? Explain to me who you, as an all- knowing GM, would have wanted AND would have been able to get back in those trades with the giants/dodgers respectively.
KJ4realz
A year and and half worth of Pence and they couldn’t get anyone solid in return?
It’s a debacle more in the sense that we’ve seen no prospect pan out (or were even highly rated) come back to Philly for Victorino, Pence, or Lee. All 3 above average players. 2 out of the 3 had at least a year on their contracts. Hindsight is one thing, but when you move those 3 and you have absolutely nothing to show for it after 2-3 years? That becomes a debacle.
Also saying he waited until the last minute because he most likely could’ve received better packages from different teams. It just seemed as though he could’ve gotten more.
I could be absolutely wrong, but out of those 3 I named, when a failed starter turned to an up and down reliever is the best you could get, that shows inept ability.

Um, Ethan Martin was rated the #80 prospect in all baseball after 2012 at age 23. And we got him, plus salary relief and a mediocre reliever (Lindblom) for 2 months of terrible Victorino.
LIMetfan22
The same Ethan Martin who was optioned to AAA a month ago? Nice! Go RAJ! Please never get fired.
NotCanon
Yep, those 4 IP are a big deal.
He’s coming back from injury, and they brought him up when they needed an extra arm in the bullpen.
raltongo 2
Victorino was a rental and he was struggling big time when he was dealt. If you look outside of Philadelphia, how many trades actually work out for ‘top’ prospects? Carlos gonzalez is one and the rangers got a pretty good deal for texiera to the braves. Other than that, what are we looking at seriously?
KJ4realz
Umm pence to Philly. Holliday to oakland, bedard to Seattle. Plenty more actually.
But like someone above said, Martin, lindblom, aumonte are the 3 best players you receive for 3 months of Victorino, 1 year of Lee, and 1.5 years of Pence? They haven’t even been serviceable pieces sent to the Phillies. Not all packages work out for teams giving up established players, but also, how often do teams get nearly nothing of service back when trading those established players away? Also a #80 overall as the height for 1.5 years of Pence? The phillies have up 2 guys pushing the top 50 for him a season prior. His value doesn’t depreciate that much over a year.
Moral of the story, I don’t Trust Amaro acquiring talent.
KJ4realz
I didn’t see the Cargo reference. Also I think I’m getting the Victorino and Pence prospects received jumbled a bit. I was grouping everything together. But it is kind of funny that he actually got more back from a rental having a bad year
Than he did for a guy that is better under another year of control.
It just seems that Amaro makes deals that he wants rather than that gets the best back. The Lee deal especially. Not anyone can agree that the Seattle deal was the best offer he could’ve gotten.
NotCanon
You can’t really combine all three and act like they were all part of the same trade. The return for Victorino was solid. The return from Pence? Not so much – although that’s due in large part to the concussions of Tommy Joseph. The Lee trade was terrible, but it’s sounded for quite some time like he didn’t really have a choice about how long to wait on that move, due to the ownership group.
Also, while Amaro isn’t even an average GM, he’s the dude who traded 4 guys, one of whom is in the majors (Carlos Carrasco, below-average reliever), one of whom just came back to baseball (A+ ball after 3 years out), and two of whom are out of baseball for Cliff Lee and Ben Francisco. He also traded 3 guys who are either struggling at the MLB level or not even at it (still) for Roy Halladay. And the cost for Oswalt was Happ (who turned into a pumpkin after the trade), Gose (who’s worse than Happ), and Villar (who’s even worse). Acting like all his trades were busts is disingenuous.
KJ4realz
All his trades to acquire talent.
NotCanon
How were Lee, Halladay and Oswalt not talent?
NotCanon
Eh, I don’t think the Victorino trade was a “debacle” in the slightest. He was having the worst season of his career, and his contract was only for another 2 months. In exchange, they got salary relief, a mediocre ‘pen arm, and a 23-year-old pitching prospect who ranked #80 in baseball according to MLB at the time. He was doing mighty fine before his injury too, which really isn’t something that could’ve been predicted.
Now, allegedly they could have had him for less than he cost Boston, but we don’t know if that’s really true… And the last thing we could afford going into 2013 was 3 years of 2012 Victorino at $13MM/year.
Connor 3
Hard to have meaningful Dialogue when you want 3 top 20 prospects in return for him.
raltongo 2
I think that’s fair. Phils need hamels to put fannys in the seats anyway. If they don’t get blown away by an offer, its in their best interest to hang on to him. I would like to see them get creative with Howard but that’s a slim to none shot
NotCanon
Eh, Howard’s off the books around the same time they’ll have a chance at being serious competitors again (not necessarily going to be, but they’ve got a chance), so they can ride that one out without much concern.
Assuming they want to do so, they could even be players for Price in the 2015 off-season.
maxp
Which part of “The Phillies have not reached the point of receiving offers or making “specific requests” for packages involving lefty Cole Hamels” did you miss?
d-blaqueqq
A stubborn Amaro and the surging Rays makes Ben Cherington a happy man.
maxp
Lester is a pending FA while Hamels has 4-5 years left – the 2 have little to do with one another. Price? Different story.
koufaxblue
Of course not your asking the stove and kitchen sink.
maxp
Why do people continue to gripe about asking for too much in a thread that specifically states that no one has given or received Cole Hamels trade offers? RIF
Cdiaz
The only way for it to be fair were if the philles paid all of the salary, lol. But since their not paying all the salary and asking for those prospects it ain’t going to happend. Im sure they’ll put him on waivers in agust.
NotCanon
Everybody gets put on waivers in August. They’re revocable, so it really doesn’t matter.
raltongo 2
Ruben is a bad gm. Yes. 100%. We get it. But its funny how so many of you armchair GMs think you could have done anything better. Its actually sad because this fan base is supposed to have more sports knowledge than this constant complaining of Ruben amaro in hindsight
NotCanon
To be fair, a large number of those calling Amaro stupid aren’t even Phillies fans. Though that doesn’t change a whole lot.
Jaysfan1994 2
His handling of Howard’s extension was one of the worst moves in the history of baseball, there was no need to extend him during he 2010 season as he wasn’t due to become a free agent until after the 2011 season and his value was only going to go down as he aged from 30 to 32 once that time came.
Not to mention he’s handed out multiple limited no-trade clauses to players that would’ve accepted a deal based on the average annual value of the contract alone.
Gumby65
Has anybody had “meaningful dialogue” with RAJ in several years?

His accountant?
