With starter Justin Masterson being moved today, eyes have understandably shifted to another Indians veteran who is set to hit the open market after the season: shortstop Asdrubal Cabrera. While it remains uncertain whether or not he will be moved, here’s the latest on possible suitors for him and other middle infielders:
- The Giants are still weighing second base options like Gordon Beckham, Emilio Bonifacio, and Cabrera, tweets Jon Morosi of FOX Sports.
- The Indians have discussed Cabrera with the Blue Jays and Giants “this week,” tweets Jon Morosi of FOX Sports, who hastens to add that he does not know whether talks are still alive with those clubs. Toronto has in fact “emerged as a possibility” on Cabrera, reports Jon Heyman of CBSSports.com.
- The Blue Jays are expected to hold off on adding to their slate of position players, tweets Ken Rosenthal of FOX Sports. Instead, Toronto will focus on pitching. (Then again, the club has reportedly shifted back and forth between those broad signposts for weeks, if not longer.)

Not really following the Indians but I believe they’re still in the playoff race. Can they afford to rely on their depth so much through the end of the season. Masterson was having a down season but he was second on the team in innings pitched and the other options aren’t that much of an upgrade Salazar has a 4.96 ERA, Bauer 4.25, and McAllistar at 5.65. And while I know Asdrubal hasn’t lit the world on fire at the plate but he has been serviceable, can Lindor make the jump smoothly and help the team down the road?

Salazar and Bauer have been steadily improving this season, McAllister is still struggling but TJ House, who will take Mastersons spot in the rotation, has pitched pretty well when given the chance, so trading Masterson actually improves the team. Lindor won’t be called up until September at the earliest, he’s only played a handful of games at AAA, they’ve got a kid named Ramirez that would most likely replace Cabrera and if he plays everyday he could turn out to be at least as good and probably better

As I said I haven’t really followed the Indians but I just worried they’d put too much faith in their depth.

5 back in the WC and 6.5 in the division. Still a possibility, but not all that likely IMO.

Sure a lot of things have to go right but you don’t give up when you are that close to a playoff berth

They are “technically” still in the race but highly unlikely. You know whoever finishes second in the Oakland/Anaheim race has the first wildcard almost officially on ice, and then it’s a mess between Seattle/Toronto/Baltimore/New York Yankees/Rays/White Sox for the second wildcard. Outside of the Angels & A’s, the AL is mediocre no doubt, but Cleveland still has a lot of teams to jump. And even with the Tigers playing lousy I don’t see Cleveland catching Detroit for the division.
Howie
lol why do you still include the Rays and White Sox, I am sure they won’t even be in it come September (prob. a 40% chance) The way Baltimore, Toronto, Seattle, LAA, and NYY are playing it’s gonna come down to them I guarantee it.

Can Cabrera play second or third base?? Nats have short stop covered for the rest of the year but could use a fill in at either side of short.

Asdrubal was a second baseman before taking over SS after Omar left.
The Indians are looking for a Starter back with upside and maybe no more than 12 months away from the majors a guy like Blake Treinen or Austin Voth may fit what they are looking for in a return.

Blake Treien, & Taylor Jordan both have major league expierence this year. Taylor Hill also appeared in 1 game. Think AJ Cole might be pretty close too. Of the 3, Treinen has the most upside. He’d be in the major league rotation right now, except all 5 starters are healthy, and all 5 have a 4.3 era or less. Since all 5 starters will be back next year (Fister & Jordan Zimmermann are FA’s after 2015) he’s likely blocked next year as well barring injury.

Cabrera wasn’t even up in the big leagues when Visquel was still with the ball club. Heck, he wasn’t even in the organization yet, as Cabrera was acquired from the Mariners in 2006. I’m guessing you mean Jhonny Peralta, who got traded in the middle of 2010.

any Mid.Inf. would be an UPGRADE for the Giants…I really wish we would pull the trigger on Utley Homegrown Veteran ? We want a ring , not watching the dodgers choke in the playoffs (see what I did there..lol)

Sooooo basically no one has had any idea what the Jays are up to.
Pretty much exactly what I want to hear. Tight ships with few leaks are good things.
