The trade of Jake Peavy might just be the tip of the iceberg for the Red Sox. Brian MacPherson of the Providence Journal lists ten more players the Sox could potentially deal at this week’s deadline. Among them are four relievers (Burke Badenhop, Craig Breslow, Andrew Miller and Koji Uehara), plus starter/reliever Felix Doubront. MacPherson notes that Doubront, like 1B/OF Mike Carp (who recently asked for a trade), is eager to get out of Boston.
Jason Mastrodonato of MassLive.com explains that Doubront sees himself as a starter and wants the Red Sox to put him in the rotation if they’re going to keep him. “I just want to be a starter and stay there,” Doubront says. “If I stay (with the Red Sox), they have to know I have to be a starter. If I go, the other team is going to give me this chance to be a starter.” The addition of player discontent to a disappointing roster full of highly tradeable players could make the deadline a very eventful one in Boston. Here’s more from the AL East.
- The Blue Jays have a number of needs to balance at the deadline, MLB.com’s Gregor Chisholm writes. “I think we have enough resources to do what we want to do,” GM Alex Anthopoulos has said, although Chisholm notes that the Jays probably don’t have a lot of money to spend and doesn’t have a ton of nearly-ready young talent to trade, particularly given that the team is unlikely to deal Marcus Stroman or Aaron Sanchez.
- The Orioles probably won’t acquire a top starting pitcher, but they might acquire depth in that area, writes MLB.com’s Brittany Ghiroli. They could look for a lefty relief pitcher, as well as a catcher (they’ve recently been linked to Kurt Suzuki) or second baseman. Orioles executive Dan Duquette seems disinclined to trade top young pitchers, including Kevin Gausman.
VAR
Doubront and Carp are hardly in a position to be making demands. Play well enough so that they can never give your job away. Then you get to make demands.
tbo1221
Sure they are. They’re on a last place team and they’re not getting any playing time. There’s no point in staying when they could attempt to boost their value elsewhere. It’s not all that different from player opting out of a minor league contract to seek an MLB opportunity on another team.
VAR
I was speaking of demands for playing time. They have little to no trade based on the fact that they haven’t been playing well.
tbo1221
Carp was hurt for a while and he still has a pretty respectable OBP in his small sample size this year. He is never going to beat out Napoli for a job and he doesn’t play much LF. So if he’s looking to play somewhere else I see no problem with that.
Doubront hasn’t been good this year, but when you see younger guys like Rubby and Webster getting starts ahead of you it’s not a good sign. He wants to start and he knows that’s probably not going to happen with Boston. If he wants to complain then let him, he’s just looking out for his best interests.
VAR
His .215 batting average says otherwise.
stl_cards16
Sure, if trying to win 80 games is the Red Sox goal. In reality, Boston is the exaxt kind of team that should be giving Doubrant a test run the rest of the season.
VAR
Doubront has had 4 chances in Boston. His best chance is to earn another opportunity to pitch by pitching well out of the pen. He could do it if he wants. He spanked the cards in the ws last year.
flickadave
Actually, I agree with letting Felix pitch. The more games we lose, the better our draft slot.
Stonehands
This isn’t the NBA, improving your draft slot by 1 or 2 isn’t going to make much of a difference
Dustroia15
The 10th pick is much more valuable than the 11th. (correction:unless a team fails to sign a top ten pick from the prior year)
Stonehands
That is introducing an entire new element though, as a general rule of thumb, the draft helps build your team for 2+ years down the road, you should not worry about draft position, you should worry about winning the World Series and building toward that goal every single year
karkat
Why let Doubront, who has shown time and time again he lacks the ability to last long enough to be a reliable starter, take starts away from people like Workman, Webster, and Renaudo down the stretch?
NomarGarciaparra
Perhaps it’d be a good idea to let him start for the rest of the season and hope he shows enough to be a semi-decent trade candidate.
VAR
I am playing poorly on a team that is not playing well. It us partially my fault. I demand to be traded! Sounds legit.
stl_cards16
I wouldn’t mind taking on Doubrant and give him a look in the rotation.
MaineSox
Yeah, I think he’d be a decent pickup for someone who has the room to take a chance on him.
karkat
The thing is I love him in the bullpen and he’s not a free agent until after the 2017 season.
Bob Bunker
Doubrant for Wick?
Antonio Alexsander langston
Someone go tell Felix how that attitude worked out for Aceves.
ugotrpk3113
Hey Felix – try pitching well. I heard it helps convince teams to make you a starter. Just a thought.
Lefty_Orioles_Fan
There’s only two pitchers that I would want
Cashner or Quintana.
Everyone tells me they are unavailable, so that’s that.
So, therefore I would rather roll with what we have and roll the dice!
As for a catcher, I think Hundley and Joseph are just fine.
Other then that, the only thing I would consider is signing Castillo from Cuba as long as you think he helps. I don’t know for sure.
Baseball Realism
He has shown glimpses and Carp could be the diamond in the rough similar Jose Bautista (obviously not power wise, more situation wise where no one gave him a true shot). I can see a few teams wanting to take a chance on him at the discounted Boston sell price
Durabont has shown he may be a 5th starter. Not really something to brag about but something you can take a chance with. A chance that would come quite cheap and worse case, you just cut your ties.
tigerfan1968
Carp and Bautista in the same post. Funny. Doubront not Durabont though he is not that durable. These players that are just pitching or playing poorly it is always the situation. The fault is always in the stars. I like Carp and do agree he would be useful in a situation where he could get the AB that a Mike Aviles is getting.
Goriax
Why even mention the Jays anymore? They aren’t doing anything.
Ziggy13
Currently trying to make improvements when they’re 3 games back in the division and currently holding onto a wild card spot, yeah nothing worth following there…
Cuso
I think he’s referring to their lack of attempts to improve their roster – which is a valid assessment. Ever since they balked at the price on Samardjiza, they’ve been stagnant in the trade market and not even linked to anyone.
Who?
The price was Stroman+…can’t just deal away one of the players who’s keeping the team in the race.
Goriax
This is precisely what I was saying. I wasn’t on the samardzija bandwagon. The price was too high. And the price for Price was also way too high and I would have hated to see top prospects going into the division. I would have liked to have seen a move for a proven and (the big word) CONSISTENT number three starter. Happ, Hutch and Dickey have been very jekyl and hyde this season. Hutch’s inability to pitch at home is very concerning. I mean think for a sec, 5 starters and how many of them would you wanna see pitching in the playoffs? Having another tested and consistent veteran arm in there would be great. Doesn’t have to be an ace or something that lights up the radar gun, just a guy that can get the ground balls when needed or pitch out of trouble. The bullpen is also very much in need of such a proven presence.
George Vander Buist
Um, hey, Blue Jays. If you say you have the resources to do whatever you want, then do at least something… all of these games you lose while you sit on the fence are going to become pretty important at the end of September
JamieFC
Which games? I believe they’ve lost three since the break.
George Vander Buist
who mentioned the all-star break as an evaluation point?
JamieFC
“All of these games you lose while you sit on the fence”
They’ve been sitting on the fence the past couple weeks (since the break). During this time, they’ve been winning, What date are you using as an evaluation point?
M.Kit
There’s a reason Doubront lost his spot in the rotation….
Jesus Ortiz
Someone needs to tell doubront that in order to make demands you have to play well. Since 2012 he’s had his share of opportunities to stay in the rotation.
Travis2014
Brewers trade for Uehara and slide K-Rod into the set up role. I could then watch the end of games much easier. Not sure I want to see K-Rods reaction though.
NomarGarciaparra
Doubront: “If I stay (with the Red Sox), they have to know I have to be a
starter. If I go, the other team is going to give me this chance to be a
starter.”
Ben: “No problem. You start Friday in Pawtucket.”
ba9oriole
Koji Uehara to the Orioles makes sense. He was a fan favorite when he used to play for the O’s. Imagine an O’s bullpen with Uehrara (1.51 ERA, 0.76 WHIP), Britton (1.72 ERA, 0.89 WHIP) and O’Day (1.17 ERA, 0.96 WHIP).
