The Athletics are likely to try to make a deal for starting pitching, Susan Slusser of the San Francisco Chronicle reports. Another option might be to stretch out Drew Pomeranz and move him into their rotation.
The Athletics have gotten great results from Sonny Gray, Scott Kazmir and Jesse Chavez this offseason, but haven’t done as well with Dan Straily, Tommy Milone and Josh Lindblom. They’ve also lost Jarrod Parker and A.J. Griffin, both of whom have had Tommy John surgery. Slusser suggests that the A’s could perhaps trade a big-league position player, maybe someone like catcher John Jaso, for a pitcher.
Early May is not prime trading season, of course, and most significant trades don’t occur until later in the summer. The A’s currently lead the Rangers by two games in the AL West.

Thank goodness. I love what Sonny, Kaz and Jesse are doing..but after last night I knew we’d have to do something cause Strails and Milone aren’t getting it done.
liberalconservative
Straily has struggled this season. he might be more of a bullpen guy. Curt Young has done a great job in making below average pitchers into solid starters.
chicothekid
The Mets have pitching available now and are one of the few teams who do. They could probably have Colon back for free, but Gee would also be available and everyone knows what the A’s farm system looks like. Seems like a match made in heaven to me if they can agree on a price.
Seamaholic
A’s don’t have a particularly good farm system.
JoshSyvertsen
Forgive my ignorance…do the A’s have any descent position player prospects?
JoshReddicksWalkupSong
Addison Russell, ranked #3 overall by Keith Law this year.
I think #11 by MLB.
Pei Kang
The only way the Mets will get Addison Russell is by trading Montero +deGrom+.
JoshReddicksWalkupSong
I assume the A’s want proven major league starters and not prospects. So, that wouldn’t happen either.
Pei Kang
maybe. We really can’t predict what Beane thinks.
agureghian
That is a stupid trade for the A’s.
Snoochies8
Why’d the Brewers have to do a silly thing like get off to a major league best start? I wanted Gallardo! Now I don’t know who would be a good target. Shields? Masterson? Eovaldi?
TheoHoyer
Cubs have a few SP trade candidates.
Billy's Braintrust
Doesn’t help Straily or Milone when the offense doesn’t generate runs either. If Jaso’s on the chopping block, the Royals won’t bite w/ Shields (they have Perez behind the plate). Masterson is too damn good at the head of Cleveland’s rotation. I smell a surprise coming from the Braintrust.
Eric D.
Want Doubront? Just ship Reddick back.
Steve Corbett
Nobody wants Doubront
Eric D.
Nor should they
DarthMurph
The Sox don’t really have a need for Reddick.
User 4245925809
Or want him back. Streaky hitter, strikes out a lot with massive holes in his swing. One reason Bryce Brentz is (and will stay for awhile) at Pawtucket.
Think Doubrant also would be dealt this coming off season if the team didn’t have 2 potential FA in Lester/Peavy. They could fill both from within from the outstanding Pawtucket 5 rotation of course, though think if lester is allowed to leave the team will work a short term deal (1-2y) with Peavy and Doubront moved anyway due to his inconsistencies.
Freddie Morales
Getting back Colon and cash for a reliever sounds like a win win for both teams. Mets can put Dice-K, Montero, or DeGrom in the rotation until Syndergaard is ready to come up later this season.
liberalconservative
Brandon McCarthy back to Oakland in a money dump by the d-backs
DarthMurph
I would not rule out a David Price trade. With a legitimate ace, this team could be a strong World Series contender and it would get more national exposure for their stadium issue. Beane has shown an increased willingness to spend.
Seamaholic
Russell available? If so, you can get Price. If not, fuhgettaboutit unless the Rays fall out of the race.
JoshReddicksWalkupSong
Yeah, I don’t see a trade working out with Price. For this exact reason. The A’s won’t trade Russell and the Rays won’t trade Price without him.
DarthMurph
That’s a tough call, but one that I would make. Russell might be a top ranked prospect, but the A’s are in a win now mode and have the pitchers necessarily to stomach the blow if Russell does end up making it as a big league starter. I don’t think it would be as bad as the Shields/Myers trade.
liberalconservative
Rays have just signed Escobar to a extension so there is not a need for a SS. Price is a costly piece which I don’t see Beane going after him unless the price is way down.
jill
It’s a bit shocking to me that the A’s may have to go outside of the organization for pitching. I guess their ‘endless’ supply of young, talented pitchers has come to an end.
They should call the Cubs or the Cardinals.
rouscher
Want cliff lee and some money? We’ll go for addison reed and another prospect
Cabro Epico
ha!
liberalconservative
Addisob Reed will not be traded how about Micheal Taylor and Daric Barton
JoshReddicksWalkupSong
I wanted Cliff Lee last year, but nobody is getting Addison Russell.
Sky14
It might be difficult for the A’s to trade Addison Reed.
Yankees420
I’m sure Towers won’t mind.
Cabro Epico
where’s barry zito?
JoshReddicksWalkupSong
Where he should be
JoshSyvertsen
Counting his cash…
Cabro Epico
hahaha
Seamaholic
Prepare to overpay then. If any decent pitcher becomes available, Beane won’t be the only GM slobbering over him, to put it mildly.
JoshReddicksWalkupSong
The A’s need to send Straily to AAA and throw Pomeranz in the rotation. Milone is a big league starter, he just isn’t good. Straily has good stuff, but completely forgets he’s playing in a baseball game for 5-10 batters a game. It’s either a four pitch walk with nothing close or a batting practice fastball thigh high at 87 mph. It happens so consistently. I’m not a big fan of trading Jaso, but it needs to be a power pitcher if he’s involved. Someone that can strike out a lot of guys that the A’s can use in the playoffs to make it past the first round.
Ron Loreski
Jed Lowrie for Jeff Locke and Jeanmar Gomez.
misunderestimated
No way the A’s make that deal
macdice
I am sure an As fan will correct me but doesn’t Yoenis Céspedes have one more season left on his contract after this year? I wonder if Bene would trade him for a starter, trying to leverage 1.5 years of Céspedes who they might not be able to resign?
Snoochies8
That would have to wait until the offseason
Pei Kang
AJ Cole…wait…
liberalconservative
AJ Cole took forever to make it out of A ball. He is still a good 3 years away. Very inconsistent pitcher more likely a reliever when he makes it to the majors.
RyÅnWKrol
This proves that there’s a difference between pitching depth on paper, and pitching depth on the mound. That depth still has to perform. But I’m wondering if it’s a starter they really need since they’re tops in SP ERA and 2nd in SP IP. I mean, what do they really expect from their 4th and 5th starters? Or maybe something is concerning them regarding the top 3? All I know is there are many other teams with much more of a need at SP. Think the A’s are far from needing to press the panic button on their rotation.
Chris Koch
So how long before the Jeff Samardzija rumors begin and the A’s? Probably the only team that remotely feels out of contention…Ok there’s Houston too but What Pitcher do they have that would remotely improve the A’s?
Lefty_Orioles_Fan
I would be more then happy to trade Wei Yin Chen to the A’s from the O’s.
Not sure, what the O’s could use, but I am willing to get this thing done ASAP!
diehardmets
The Mets have surplus pitching and will need to trade a couple vets in order to clear room for Montero and Syndergaard later in the season. Gee, Niese, and Colon would all be available, and I bet even Wheeler would be available if Beane dangled Russel.
Derpy
The Mets really don’t have pitching depth. Montero is likely going to the bullpen, Mejia is going to get shut down after, at absolute most, 120 innings, maybe even after 80-90, and Syndergaard isn’t going to pitch a full season either. Then factor in the odds of someone getting injured, and the Mets really don’t have much real depth this season. Next season they will, but not this season.
JoshSyvertsen
Difference is that the Mets aren’t really trying to win this year. They can be a little short in the rotation for this year if it means brining in someone like a Russell. Wheeler for Russell is intriguing. I would think Alderson would have to make that deal.
diehardmets
As fun as their run of some success has been, the Mets are really not contenders this season. As such, they should capitalize on their surplus assets now. Furthermore, it’s highly unlikely Montero winds up a BP piece. Perhaps to begin his career to limit his innings, but he is a starter. DeGrom is also looking like a legitimate starting pitcher, but he’s probably destined for the bullpen.
Joel Waitfor-it Curyer
Ryan Cook to the Marlins for Brad Hand, Tom Koelher or Descafni. Marlins have options for a trade and they need bullpen help, desperately.
jdkladsjl
lol that’s silly talk
jdkladsjl
Lowrie and Cespedes are not going anywhere lol Susan slusser said on twitter Jaso would be dealt for a 4 or 5 Starter. Doubt any big name pitchers are on the radar.
