Rangers catcher Geovany Soto has torn his lateral meniscus and will miss ten to twelve weeks recovering from surgery, reports Jeff WIlson of the Fort Worth Star-Telegram (via Twitter). He becomes the latest in a series of Rangers to suffer significant injuries.
With Soto on the shelf, free agent signee J.P. Arencibia figures to handle most of the load in the earlygoing, though manager Ron Washington would not commit to giving the starting nod to the former Blue Jay regular. 29-year-old Robinson Chirinos is the only other player that Texas has under contract who comes with MLB experience (just 90 plate appearances).
With roster decisions being finalized in the coming days, it would not be surprising to find Texas in the market for another backstop. As MLBTR's Charlie Wilmoth wrote in reviewing the club's offseason moves, the veteran-laden club is firmly in win-now mode. The group of catchers was already below average, and now looks like it may well need a new addition.

I can see possibly another position player.. Say an OF coming back around 10-12 weeks, maybe even 8 weeks from a torn meniscus. I’d like to also get the opinion of others here who have torn one on how much they felt the after effects of this injury and had surgery to repair it how they think someone who is bending down.. probably 200 times per game with heavy equipment on at that, will get back within 3 months.
Is that feasible?
NickinIthaca
The equipment isn’t that heavy, but I have to imagine that it will take more than 3 months for a catcher to return from that kind of injury. That’s a tough injury for someone who squats a lot to take.

I’m still catching after partially torn meniscus (Mother’s Day, 2013). Although, I took the 2013 season off completely to heal (without surgery), as I don’t get paid to play. It was excruciating for about a month, but it’s fine now.
Folks seem to think the Tools of Ignorance are lead weights – they’re not. new technology has an entire set (shins, chest, hockey mask) town to 11 pounds. I use the Mizuno Samurai kit, like what Brian McCann wore with the Braves, and you hardly even notice it’s on anymore.
All this being said, the 8-12 weeks is optimistic for a man of Geovany Soto’s…carriage. His pop time is likely to decrease, and depending on if it’s his planting leg, his throwing strength may also decrease.

I bet the Red Sox would give up Dan Butler for a low-level high-ceiling prospect type.
User 4245925809
Lavarnway is supposedly already on the block. it seems Butler is the 1st guy to be called up right now before they deem Vazquez ready.. Probably later on this season, though myself I think Lava is of more used than Butler since he can now play both 1b and C.
Butler however has 3 options and Lava only 1, that probably makes him the 1st guy moved of the pair in the Sox FO thinking. Nice post btw.

Johnny Monell perhaps?

Brayan Pena to the Rangers for Michael Choice…
Bronx Bombers
Cut it out Kinsler. Those voodoo dolls must be really effective.
MadmanTX 2
The really scary part is how Kinsler gathered hair from every current Ranger to make the voodoo dolls work.

Another possible landing spot for Lavarnaway? Lobaton? Ramon Hernandez?

Lavarnway?

This isn’t a dig at Texas in anyway before posting.. Just a point..
Several years ago, Boston needed a catcher badly because Varitek was about to retire and both Lavarnway and Fed-X were way down in low A Ball. Texas farm system was literally loaded with catchers, They had Salty, Max Ramirez, Taylor Teagarden and 1 other whose name slips me. Now, Boston is loaded with Catchers in Swihart, Vazquez, Butler and Lavarnway and texas is looking for a catcher.
The point is how things change very quickly in this game of baseball .

Ryan Lavarnway maybe?
dwarfstar
How about Ryan Feierbend for Ryan Lavarnway, he threw 4 shutout innings in his start yesterday?
Nick Pavlidis
I agree… seems like the Red Sox may have found somewhere for Butler or Lavarnway… maybe for depth at a position where they don’t have as much, like a 1B prospect. Anyone know Texas’ depth at 1B?

cool story dude.

Alfaro is a well regarded catcher.
gnats
Gallo could play 1st but his defense at 3rd is great. Guzman is another, but I think the Rangers value Guzman more than most.
Ryan Rua is another.
Ben-Dessa Anderton
Gallo is a 3b but I’m the sure the thought has come up. Guzman is the likely guy of he future. However both are two years away and regarded highly enough they would not be traded for a backup catcher.

Looks like the Rangers might have a hell of a team after the first 50 or 60 games. Maybe they should empty out some of those office suites at the ball park and open a giant rehab and physical therapy clinic. Looks like Doc Meister needs move his operation closer to the field. I’m still a fan. Not a happy fan, but a fan.

Took me longer. However I was 12 and my little league was unable to front me the elite surgeons.

No love for Robinson Chirinos. He is no household name but I think he can serve amply as the backup to Arencibia. Not ideal to have JP start but hell, he can hit a long ball. People are acting as if the a Rangers lost some high level catcher. Soto is a solid backstop but doesn’t hit much anymore. As for trading for one, they could consider moving an out of options RP like Michael Kirkman, but they aren’t going to panic and trade anyone noteworthy. The non roster group is a joke so there could be a need to trade somewhere. At least Chirinos offers the idea of playing so,me 1b but that’s not a need at this point. Too bad Alfaro needs a another year or two.
Matthew Augeri
Can Arencibia hit .150/.175/.300? He hit .145/.173/.265 after the all-star break last year.

Tyler flowers-Gordon beckham- and another prospect for odor
BENT_WOOKIE
it’s kind of awkward for everyone that you’d make such a trade suggestion.
Daniel Morairity
the rangers need more veteran players because of soto and profar out for 10 weeks and they need drew and morales now
