The Orioles are in discussions with free agent left-handers Joe Saunders and Chris Capuano, tweets Jon Morosi of FOX Sports.
Orioles Executive Vice-President of Baseball Operations Dan Duquette has said on several occasions that the O's are on the hunt for a veteran starter this offseason, and both Saunders and Capuano would fit that bill. However, neither distinguished themselves in 2013, as Saunders posted a 5.26 ERA in 183 innings for the Mariners, and Capuano managed just 105 2/3 frames for the Dodgers after struggling with various injuries. He eventually received a $1MM buyout. With both Ervin Santana and Ubaldo Jimenez still on the market, it's safe to say a deal for Saunders or Capuano wouldn't be the impact move many O's fans have waited for this offseason.
The Orioles were known to be in pursuit of A.J. Burnett, who is a Maryland resident. However, Roch Kubatko of MASNsports.com reported yesterday that the chances of a deal "don't look good," as it's believed Burnett would prefer to remain in the National League.
Hopefully that means AJ returns to Pittsburgh.

Let the dumpster diving begin in Baltimore!
the market has finally played out time for Baltimore to enter the market
Begin?
You mean “continue”
Seriously. If the Dodgers got Maholm for 1.5 million base, certainly the Orioles could have gotten him for 3. I would easily take that over the other extremes — a Vargas/Hughes type for 8 million a year, or a Saunders type for peanuts
Was actually hoping Bazooka Joe went back to Seattle on some kind of split contract, or bottom barrel type deal. He’s definately not worth anywhere near the 6m +/- he’s managed to get the last few years, but might be able to get a couple million if he waits until the rest of the dominos fall if he’s lucky.
No Barry Zito?
How about a breakout season (and then some) from KEVIN GAUSMAN. Keep believing.
Its bad when your token signing is probably going to be a guy who is a borderline minor league free agent.
Good, get Capuano out of the NL!!
Honestly why not get one of these guys, and let tillman, gausman, and bundy eventually have the top 3 spots, with britton, on of the mentioned starters saunders or capuano, and miguel gonzalez. And so you look at a rotation of tillman, gausman, saunders/capuano, gonzalez, and britton, and then hopefully plug
In bundy or eduardo rodriguez later in the year.
where is bud norris or wei-yin chen?
chen is better than gonzo. rodriguez is still really young. i don’t see him being brought up until maybe the end of 2015. gausman will be up and maybe bundy can be brought into the pen later in the year depending on how he recovers. they have some good young pitchers though with the three of them plus mike wright. hopefully at least two of them work out and stick around. britton is out of options so he’ll prob get a shot at starting.
UN BE LIEVE ABLE!!! Wait… yes, I can totally believe this… Duquette “yeah… we will be at $100 million payroll by the start of the season….”
How?!? Are you giving yourself a $17M bonus for keeping the payroll low? Sometimes I hate that I love the Orioles.
If the Orioles sign Capuano, I will be happy with that signing.
However, they should have gotten more done during this off-season!
Burnett really wouldn’t have done anything for us.
The “Closer” who wound up with the Rays would have been very nice, but for whatever reason it wasn’t meant to be.
Signing Joe Saunders aka “Mr. 5 and 2/3rd’s” really isn’t my idea of success.
Bottom line is the Orioles need to sign Jimenez and Capuano to have any kind of effect on the 2014 season. We need two pitchers signed! Not just one!
You’d be happier with Capuano than Burnett?
Can’t you read so good? =P
You see Jimenez and Capuano!
Plus, I am not interested in Burnett!
No way let some other AL East Team take him!

Why does Burnett want to be in the NL so bad? Does he care that much about his numbers? He’s retiring after this next contract…
He might just really enjoy hitting. Plus, he’s more likely to have a better (almost certainly) last season if he faces the pitcher at least 2-3 in more spacious ballparks (on average).
The ONLY reason the Orioles are discussing Saunders and Capuano is because they are both CHEAP….thats it. No other reason whatsoever.
