The Royals have designated Yuniesky Betancourt for assignment, according to Bob Dutton of The Kansas City Star (via Twitter). The move allows for the Royals to call up infielder Tony Abreu from Triple-A Omaha.
Betancourt rejoined the Royals this past offseason after being included in the Zack Greinke trade to the Brewers after the 2010 season. The infielder was hitting .232/.260/.408 in 56 games with Kansas City this year.

He wont clear waivers
Monkey’s Uncle
I don’t specifically remember what his contract was when the Royals picked him up, but if he is making starter money, I bet he does clear waivers. He is not starter material, and that is what the Royals inexplicably wanted him to be.
TLB2001
$1 million 1 year.
Monkey’s Uncle
TY, less than I thought. Still, based on his “production” this year, I can’t imagine anyone grabbing him on waivers.
Gabe Stalder
Try 2 mil for 1. It was almost like they were competing w/someone to sign him last offseason.
Todd Rogers
Royals never wanted him to be a starter. Getz was the 2nd baseman and Escobar the SS. They wanted him to be a utility IF
Snoochies8
Billy, I know you need a SS, but please, stay away, stay FAR FAR away.
itsmewade
As much as I agree with you, this is exactly the type of crap they usually do.

Signs that you may be running out of chances: when you are DFA’d to make room for Tony Abreu. What the fascination has been with this guy by both the Brewers and Royals, I may never understand.
Novak
He was only ever a place-holder for the Brewers for the year, because Alcides Escobar, the starting shortstop, was a key piece in the deal that got Greinke and B-Court. He performed adequately while with the Brewers, but I sure wouldn’t ever want him back…
MaineSkin
Cant believe Giovatella is not beig called up, but Getz should get a boost in deeper fantasy leagues. Gets has more speed than he has flashed so far this season.
Colin Christopher
They need someone who can play a utility role. Gio isn’t even that good of a 2B, and would be a disaster at SS or 3B.
Eric Park
I’m actually not upset that Giovatella isn’t being called up. Team isn’t going anywhere, better to let Gio play every day and go into next year with the intention of him being our starter. Getz has played well, so we might as well showcase him for the rest of the year and perhaps get some decent value from another team who needs middle infield help. Gio also hasn’t done a thing in his chances in the big leagues. He hasn’t been given many chances, but he should look at his own performance in the majors first when questioning why it’s taking so long for the Royals to commit. Let Abreu play once a week and pinch run in the meantime, sounds like a fine plan.

A general manager like Beane who holds OBP and defensive metrics in regard should not bother with Betancourt as far as Im concerned. He has some power for a shortstop but he’s pretty pedestrian is every other aspect of his game.
RiosFan
White sox! They need a back up SS.
oaklandfan22
I say the A’s pick him up, even though i really don’t want them to.
mgsports
Colon should have been called up or even Myers
Colin Christopher
Colon isn’t ready, so there’s no point in starting his service clock right now, and Myers doesn’t play infield, so that just wouldn’t work.
Tyler Groesch
pirates should pick him up
N_Cap
Barmes’s defense is way more valuable then an extra 20 points batting

If Rafael Betancourt can be an average shortstop The Giants should consider signing him to a minor league contract. Betancourt is alot better than Brandon Crawford.
ThisGuyRocks
Yuniesky?
Colin Christopher
No, he meant Rafael. Think how awesome it would be if you could just move your shortstop to closer for the 9th inning.
Ah
Who says Betancourt is an average short stop?!
Even as a royals fan I feel bad for whatever team picks him up. Unless it is the white sox, Indians. Twins. Or tigers. Then I’ll sit back and enjoy watching a short stop put zero effort into any ball hit towards him.
Go Dayton! Now let’s send Frenchy to any other team and enjoy the fact our team is less awful.
bigpat
Honestly he was a decent fit for the Brewers, I wouldn’t be surprised to see them bring him back.
Otis26
I hope we can trade him for Bob…you know – Bag of balls. His lateral movement is so bad that my entertainment unit at home used to scream at him “I CAN DO BETTER THAN THAT!”
