The Orioles have designated right-hander Miguel Socolovich for assignment, according to Britt Ghiroli of MLB.com (via Twitter). The move will allow the Orioles to clear a spot on the 40-man roster for J.C. Romero.
The native of Venezuela pitched ten and one-third innings for the O's this season, allowing eight earned runs with six strikeouts and six walks. In 28 games for Triple-A Norfolk in 2012, Socolovich posted a 1.90 ERA with 9.0 K/9 and 2.4 BB/9.

He has some nice minor league stats. He will certainly earn a spot on someone’s 40 man roster.

I’m not thrilled by this. Sure his major league numbers don’t show it, but he has a pretty good arm. Someone will take him off our hands.
Rabbitov
He has a good AAAA arm, thats about it.

Who should have been DFAd instead? In the past, guys with good arms could be helpful because we had a bunch of guys who didn’t have good arms. Now, results actually matter and Socolovich didn’t perform at the major league level. We don’t need to stockpile good arms who can’t get people out anymore. We’re better than that, especially in our bullpen.

You’re absolutely right. It’s just a problem I’m not used to having…having an abundance of quality arms in the pen
mstrchef
Totally agree. Wait, that means I’m agreeing with you agreeing with me. That sounds kind of narcissistic. Anyway, I remember it wasn’t that long ago that we added Jaime Walker, Denys Baez, and Chad Bradford and considered that a major upgrade.
BradyAndersonsSideburns
Ugh Baez, he would come in sweating all over and just fail every time he came in. Then you go further back to the times when the O’s relied on the likes of Chris Ray, Jorge Julio, and Ryan Kohlmeier to close games. Now, I mean I’m not a huge Kevin Gregg fan in the least, but he’s the weak link in the pen and even he has been serviceable for the past few months. It’s kind of frightening actually.

Don’t forget Mike DeJean…I still have nightmares

If Socolovich was lefty, he’d probably still be in the majors. However, I believe that he’ll accept an assignment back with Norfolk.

Yes, he’s posted nice AAA stats but, he’s given up some really big hits and allowed a lot of inherited runners score in the majors. The type that have cost the Orioles a win or two. Not a good trait for a reliever.

I wish we didn’t have to do this. He’s going to be a good pitcher for someone else. Watch and see..
