The Giants are seeking outfield help following Melky Cabrera's 50-game suspension, reports Ken Rosenthal of FOX Sports (on Twitter). For now the team plans to promote Justin Christian from Triple-A and stick with Gregor Blanco, Angel Pagan, and Hunter Pence as the regulars.
Rosenthal reports that Scott Hairston and Juan Pierre have yet to be placed on trade waivers, though the Diamondbacks would likely block both players from getting to San Francisco. Arizona has a higher waiver priority and both Hairston (approximately $300K) and Pierre ($200K) are reasonably priced for the remainder of the season. Alfonso Soriano remains unlikely to approve a trade to the 2010 World Champs.
Kevin Millwood and Josh Beckett still have yet to be placed on waivers according to Rosenthal. The Red Sox have put a handful of players through waivers but otherwise have remained quiet this month.
would be fitting for Pierre to join them, kill it for 30 games and then fall back into oblivion
That’s right!
he did it for the Dodgers when Manny got caught, id hate to see him do it for the Giants.
I hear Barry Bonds is available…
And RIckey Henderson hasn’t officially retired yet. 🙂
I’d pay money to watch Josh Beckett man the outfield in San Fran.
Or see him deal with the media there! Then again.. His responses could be considered normal.. Kidding..
Trade Bad contract Zito to the Angels for bad contract Wells. Done.
+1
Wells contract is worse than Zito’s at this point. And Zito actually has more value.
You’re right. I thought Zito had more left on his deal. Angels would have to kick in. Also, Wells would have to waive his no trade clause.
-1 Who would replace Zito in the rotation? Zito is actually an important part of the Giants’ rotation, especially since the role of “Bad Zito” is being played by Tim Lincecum.
The Giants are wishing they still had Nate Schierholtz.
Not really, because then, we wouldn’t have Hunter Pence.
Why would we want Nate when you’re referring to Zito above? We have plenty of players who can field and hit like a 4th outfielder.
trade bad contract zito to the angels for bad contract trout. done
Take Jeff Fancoeur! You know he’s going to be great after he’s traded.
This^ History shows Fancouer plays well for his new team initially and he’ll make it through waivers, if he hasn’t already.
How about Wells? HAHA
Nyjer Morgan could be available, and we all know how endearing he can be to a fan base… 😉
Ike, that was exactly my thought. Plus, he’s hated in Arizona, so they probably wouldn’t risk blocking him for fear that he’d end up on their roster.
Why is he hated in Arizona? Is it about last years NLDS?
Exactly, Wilsonl
Gross…just, gross.
Morgan has had a lousy year, but he’d be energized going to a contender and when he’s playing well, he’s an asset to your team. Forget the goofy stuff, he plays hard.
Not a whole lotta power happening in THAT outfield.
Anyone that could really help, Cody Ross, Josh Willingham, Chase Headley…etc would be C-Blocked by AZ. 🙁
Don’t laugh and yes.. You are probably right that the Dbacks would block the big guys who would be waived, but I wonder if they would block a guy like Pods who could help? Not a fancy guy at all, but has done very well this year and plays good defense at all OF positions + excellent speed.
Dbacks already released him, so probably safe to get by them and cost would be almost nothing.
I’m sure plenty of guys already snuck through waivers, especially guys that have negative trade value. Soriano could be a decent fit.
Belt’s finally seeming to get the hang of hitting… lets get him back in LF & bring up Pill again. Get Posey a few more games @ 1b & Sanchez more reps behind the dish.
Seriously I agree with the notion he’s getting closer to being the prospect Giants fans have been waiting for. I mean he missed first 2 home runs off a RH pitcher this season on Tuesday as a result of being AT&T’d.
I don’t agree with putting him at LF this season D there is not as valuable there. Should stick with 1st because that’s where he is comfortable and it gives him one less thing to worry about mentally.
I’ve got the deal for you – Vernon Wells to the Giants for anyone who can throw strikes in the late innings – with the Angels picking up 65% of Vernon’s salary. Good outfielder, good price, good clubhouse guy.
Nobody is going to take on $7-8m/year of Wells’ contract, let alone give something of value in addition to that. He’s a .220 and 20 HR hitter, at best.
It would literally have to be an Ed Monix level trade.
Beckett should have been on waivers on August 1st. No excuse for this.
How did Damon do in Cleveland? I know he hit about .220; I’m guessing he could do better in a pennant race. If Ibanez can help the Yankees, Damon’s a year younger.
He can’t field or throw…..or hit very well.
have they contacted Victor Conte yet?
Tigers should contact the Giants.. we have a couple outfielders who can go away.. Boesch & Young.. lol 😛
Frenchy makes sense. Fans will love him. A vet that wont freak out in playoffs
Because of the D’Backs’ presence, I see the Giants as having to make do with what they have. There is no way that the Giants can make a trade NOW; Kevin Towers will simply put in waiver blocks.
Carl C. from Boston because won’t cost to much.
The SF Giants are in good shape as you know that Jeff Francour will be very available.
