5:34pm: The Blue Jays announced that they have signed Torrealba to a minor league deal.
2:42pm: Veteran catcher Yorvit Torrealba, placed on release waivers last week by the Texas Rangers, is close to joining the Toronto Blue Jays, a source tells Drew Davison of the Fort Worth Star-Telegram (Twitter link).
Torrealba, 34, posted a .236/.302/.342 batting line in 182 plate appearances for Texas before being designated for assignment earlier this month.

Decent pick up. With Mathis playing everyday and Gomes can’t hit anything, this is a decent pickup.
I think Mathis stays for next season to complement one of JPA / TDA.

An improvement over Jeff Mathis and Yan Gomes for sure. After just seeing the Jays and Yankees square off, it was evident that they needed a veteran backstop of some kind. Torrealba has been around and should be a decent fill in until the offseason.

Gomes can play 1B/DH. Lyon or Rasmus going back.

Damn. Was hoping the Yankees would grab him. He’d be a nice upgrade over Chris Stewart.

What the heck happened to Cervelli?

Yorvit Torrealba would be a good backup catcher for Jeff Mathis since Yan Gomes is doing terrible offensibely, Yorvit will probably signed for the rest of the season due to the fact Jeff Mathis’ contract has been extended, JPA will be back by then, and D’Arnaud will have his chance in the majors next year.
