The Athletics have signed pitcher Jeremy Accardo, according to Susan Slusser of the San Francisco Chronicle (via Twitter). The right-hander will report to Triple-A Sacramento.
Accardo was designated for assignment by the Indians on August 4th and released on August 9th, the same day that they parted ways with Johnny Damon. The 30-year-old posted a 4.58 ERA with 7.1 K/9 and 4.1 BB/9 in 26 appearances for the Tribe this season. For his career, Accardo owns a 4.27 ERA with 6.5 K/9 and 3.5 BB/9 across eight seasons.

Another game changer for the A’s. Hopefully they don’t make a mistake and try to sign someone that could actually help the team win.
jpshark
Right…because there are so many above average players available to sign at this point in the season…
itsmewade
They passed on Hanley. They passed on Drew. They passed on Escobar. They signed Kottaras. They signed Neshek. They signed Accardo.
MaCmAnSuX
They did not sign Kottaras, they traded for him. And they also did not sign Neshek either, they picked him up off waivers from the O’s.
itsmewade
Right. Now that changes EVERYTHING!
thegoldenone
Minor note Neshek was never waived. A’s just traded cash for him. Since minor leaguers don’t have to pass through waivers in August.
jpshark
They didn’t pass on Hanley or Drew, they decided the asking price wasn’t worth it. There’s a difference. Plus were talking signing vs. trading. I don’t blame them for not wanting to give up anything of value for Drew, and don’t blame them for not wanting to pick up all of Hanley’s contract. Either move would have been dumb for a small market team relying on talent from within the system.

And honestly, Hanley probably would have just ruined the clubhouse chemistry the A’s currently have. He probably wouldn’t have fared well in their ballpark, and in LA he can be as vocal as he wants without any controversy. As for Drew, he’s been a oft-injured shortstop the past couple of years, and who knows whether he will return to being the productive shortstop he was from 2008-10.

Hanley stuff is speculation. He could have also hit .350 with 15 HR’s. Nobody knows that. A horrible Hanley is better than all three players they got at their peak.
thegoldenone
A horrible Hanley at his price is crippling to a small market team like the A’s. And no he couldn’t hit .350 never has and in a decline. So that’s not speculation.
itsmewade
Hanley has never his .350 over two months? Everything about clubhouse chemistry and not faring well in Oakland is speculation. So it his hitting .350.

Well I heard the two prospects involved would have been Michael Choice and Daniel Straily, who are two of the top prospects in the organization. Even if they’re just prospects, that would have been a steep price to pay for someone who was under-performing for the last year and a half.
thegoldenone
agree
itsmewade
1/2 of Hanley’s contract was what I heard. They passed on Hanley because of the price. They passed.
thegoldenone
they didn’t pass on that deal, they were in the middle of talks for it. Then Dodgers swooped in and said they would pay all of it and Miami said sure without going back to Oakland.

Here’s the quote from this website:
“The Marlins recently offered Oakland a “sweet deal” that would
have sent Ramirez to the A’s for a couple of minor leaguers and enough
cash to cover half of Ramirez’s contract, Knobler writes. But the A’s
held off on the deal, and the Dodgers agreed to take on all of Ramirez’s
salary.”

i heard the A’s were checking on his hand injury and the dodgers came in and took the contract susan slusser was on a show called the rundown on mlb network and said she heard it was straliy and choice for hanley and half his contract and if the dodgers would not of came in when they did he would have been a athletic the next day
itsmewade
Wow, Straily and Choice. That’s expensive. Didn’t Choice break his hand on the 24th?
randy
yes he did i would not won’t to lose choice but srtaliy would not bother me alot of A’s fans don’t wont to trade pitching for some reason they have so much of it if it’s for a good bat i would give up one of them just off the top of my head they got straliy, malione, parker, anderson, griffin, peacock, gray, cole, and ross so if you lose one or tow of them for a good bat it’s not going to hurt
itsmewade
I totally agree.
thegoldenone
Yes A’s held off by not taking that deal that night they were still talking to Miami, they wanted to see how Hanley’s wrist performed that day.
Beane also said on the radio he had a pretty big deal almost done with a lot of moving parts that fell apart right at the deadline. Right up the deadline they thought it was going down.
