The Rockies have been scouting the Giants’ minor league teams, so a deal could be developing, Henry Schulman of the San Francisco Chronicle writes (Twitter links). The Giants asked about acquiring Marco Scutaro for bench help a couple of weeks ago and relievers Rafael Betancourt and Matt Belisle could also interest San Francisco, Schulman writes. Here are more notes on the 37-60 Rockies…
- The Rockies don’t want to move Michael Cuddyer and are determined to keep Belisle, Jon Heyman of CBSSports.com writes.
- Scutaro, Jason Giambi, Betancourt, Matt Reynolds and Jonathan Herrera are the most likely Rockies to be traded in that order, Heyman writes.
- The Rays, Nationals, Rangers and A’s appear to have interest in Scutaro, along with the Giants. Heyman reports that the Rockies could either seek a highly-regarded prospect for Scutaro or accept salary relief and a fringy prospect.
- Several teams have called about Reynolds, Heyman reports.

Sadly, the only way the Rockies are going to be competitive in 2013 is if they hit the “create prospect” button and make three starting pitchers with all their attributes cranked up to 99.

Rockies insist on being a horribly run organization, only a few years ago they had a chance at a world series, the owner needs to blow up the front office, they dont wanna admit that this current team is a failure, start all over, just keep tulo, cargo, fowler and the catcher, pitching is horrible and every position player is replaceable. Get what you can for the marginal players you have.

NOBODY is going to give up a highly regarded prospect for Marco Scutaro! C’mon
SwingtimeInTheRockies
So, new to the game, then?

What do you propose a free agent-to-be with an OPS+ of 75 should fetch in trade?

Don’t forget was a salary dump before the season in exchange for a middle reliever and Scutaro has little range at either 2b, or SS.
little over 3m left on his contract. Awful lot for a 36YO defensively challenged middle IF whose offensive game actually went down at Coors field.
SwingtimeInTheRockies
3mil’s not that much in today’s crazy environment and obviously, the better the prospect, the more money the Rockies eat. Worth it as an all-rounder. You see this sort of guy go all the time at the deadline. The Scutaros and any halfway-decent LH relievers. Coin of the realm.
Jason_F
You’re right, you do do see this sort of guy go all the time at the deadline….for next to nothing.

“The Scutaros and any halfway-decent LH relievers. Coin of the realm.”
Oh yeah.. a middle reliever, not any top one. Maybe not even a lefty, but one exactly like Mortenson that he went for in the spring to begin with.
Not any kind of a real prospect though.
Nothing against Scutaro. he is a tough and gritty ballplayer who is good with handling the bat, but he is on the downswing of his career big time, as proven by every one of his offensive numbers going down at Coors field from Fenway.

Pre-season and deadline trades are two different animals.

depends on whether you think his .284.356.404 line over the 3 years before going to Denver matters
SwingtimeInTheRockies
Scoot is the perfect trade-deadline guy. Solid D at 2nd, short, and 3rd. Respectable hitter. Good contact, uses all fields, low strikeouts. No long-term cash commitment. He’s the guy you go get when your guy’s hurt and you can’t have an infield hole. Would he bring Profar or Teheran? Of course not but he’s easily worth a solid prospect.
notsureifsrs
sabean is certainly not one to overpay for a rental
Jayson Miller
lol highly regarded prospect for scutaro? he’s an impending FA and has a sub .700 ops, rockies must be delusional

Just looked over the Giants minor league affiliates. I think the Rockies would do well to come away with either Chris Heston or Clayton Blackburn for Scutaro. Rox need arms, but can’t expect much just for Marco.
55saveslives
Not going to happen. Both Heston and Blackburn are killing it at their respective levels. Most likely Giants take on the contract and give a scrub.

I’d have to agree. Especially since the claim is the Giants only view Scutaro as “bench help”. The Rockies probably missed out on getting a slightly better return from a team like Detroit that truly needed an everyday upgrade at 2B. At this point, it seems that Oakland is the best fit for Scutaro.
ReedleyFarmeroX4
Sounds like my Giants 36yr old fits the bill or should I say sabens m/o..giving away prospects for a soon to be retired player.damn this sucks
Adrian Garro
do it, Billy!
corey23
should have expected more of a scutaro trade than a hanley trade… lew is our owner afterall… fail
oaklandfan22
I dont feel like the A’s should make a move for scutaro due to his age and that he is only under team control for the rest of this year. Not only that but he is 36 years old which doesn’t fit the A’s mold. I feel like Billy should go after a long term option at shortstop, that can stay with the A’s for several years. We don’t have many shortstops in our farm system currently, except for addison russell who still has several years to go before he reaches the major league level. I feel like we should make a move at starlin castro or yunel escobar. I would like yunel over scutaro because hes still somewhat young (29) and under team control for a while. Hanley would’ve been a good fit, but we didn’t want to pay him that much
Adrian Garro
Meh, I’d say go for it if all it costs is spending some money. We know they have it, and I think he’d be good. Of course, that’s unless a better deal is in the works.
corey23
I’d love to have starlin or yunel i just don’t know if we make it happen… i feel like we’re better at trading away good young players than we are at acquiring them. I really hope I’m wrong though.

its coming from heyman all garbage
