Padres outfielder/first baseman Mark Kotsay is drawing interest from multiple clubs, including the Reds, Jon Paul Morosi of FOX Sports reports. However, the Padres value Kotsay's leadership and may keep him.
Kotsay, 36, has a .292/.370/.375 batting line in 81 plate appearances and a salary of just $1.25MM. The left-handed hitter could provide the Reds with late-game flexibility at a reasonable cost.
Cincinnati has also been linked to Juan Pierre, so the club appears to be eyeing low-cost outfielders who bat from the left side. I've speculated that Ryan Sweeney and Daniel Nava might also appeal to the Reds. For a detailed look at the trade market for outfielders click here.

Reds trade Rolen for Justin Upton, Aaron Hill, and all of the Dbacks best prospects?
Kevin Noonan
As a Reds fan, I would laugh hysterically at that trade if I was in the Diamondbacks’ front office.
What about Rolen and Brackman would interest any team? They sure haven’t helped the Reds this season.
Upton is much better than Stubbs and Soto isn’t exactly an Alonso/Grandal/Hamilton type prospect.
Not even close.
Brv Rocks
LOL, no!! The DBacks would want a LOT more than that for Upton. Probably more like Todd Frazier, Billy Hamilton and a couple more prospects. I don’t think the Reds have the system to get Upton after the trade for Latos last winter.
Javier Mejia
swooooooooooooooosh.

Would the Arizona GM be fired before the deal was announced or immediately thereafter?
bigpat
Wow, I don’t think Arizona would field another call from the Reds if they proposed that with a straight face.

This guy has 6 comments ever guys… Let him live in fairyland.

You know it!
Parker Perry
Guys, I think he meant this as a joke…
reds2012
They need a 3rd baseman. Rolen hasnt done anything for us because we dont need him anymore because of Frazier. Brackman hasnt done anything because he is in the minor leagues. And soto can move to 3rd base, they have tried him there before. also stubbs obviously is not upton but he is still one of the fastest players in the game with pop when he does hit the ball. Soto is one of our top end prospects in out farm system if you think about it. Brackman is ready to come up to the MLB too, its just we dont have room for either of them right now. We give the Dbacks 4 major leagers that are all around “3 stars” for a “5 star” player. There is obviously something wrong with upton if they want to get rid of him.
Guest 4437
I don’t think Brackman is MLB ready considering his 9.87 ERA in AAA and it has only been worse since being demoted to A+ as he is sporting a 4.97 ERA there.
reds2012
What about Upton for Valdez straight up?
Brandon 20
I’m a Reds fan too but I seriously hope you’re joking. The Reds aren’t getting Upton, especially at a price we can afford with Votto and Phillips on pay roll for the next few years without giving up pretty much the entire farm.
reds2012
I dont think they would accept that trade anyways….Valdez for Upton…..hahahah
rgslone
reds2012, we’re on the same side (Reds fans) so I wish we could sell your proposal. But Arizona has scouts too, and they aren’t likely to be duped like that. The truth is Rolen “hasn’t done anything for us” because he’s basically done as a player. Brackman is not MLB talent – he’s not even AAA talent. Stubbs’ is ok against LH pitching, that’s about the best you can say regarding his offense; he’s a good defensive player who can hit 7th or 8th in a line-up and not kill you too bad – that’s about the best you can say about him period. That only leaves Soto as having any kind of decent value; and while he has a ton of power potential, like too many of the Reds hitters he couldn’t make contact with water if he fell out of a boat. Just the truth my friend.

I think that Kotsay for Bruce, Corcino, Stephenson, lotzkar, Latos and Mesoraco would be fair, No?
sdsuphilip
hamilton and frazier would need to be in the deal
leachim2
Yeah if we’re trying to make it fair why not throw in Votto too.
MetsMagic
Votto is making WAY too much for that to even be possible. They’d have to include a pitcher like Cueto or Chapman, and an infielder like Larkin or Morgan.
Brett Davis
WHAT? Latos or Bruce ALONE would be a bad deal for the Reds. Holy crap….
leachim2
This guy. I tell ya.
vpsd
You are totally underestimating Kotsays value. You can’t put a price on that kind of veteran leadership.

Why do the Dbacks not like Upton?
Colin G
Too Inconsistent and it seems that Upton is not getting along with Gibson, Kevin Towers, GM and the Owner, Ken Kendrick. He’s had 6 years in the bigs and really only one good season – Last Year. He is a great player nothing more. It’s in the genes, look at his brother. they both just can’t figure it out. Dbacks need to get what they can now. They have too many hardworkers on that team that wanna win now. Not enough effort for a 50 Million Dollar man.
letsgogiants
The only thing though is that he is only 23. Not many players have the type of five-tool potential that Upton carries and have let alone even showed that potential in the majors. As last year showed, Upton basically carried the Diamondbacks into the NL West Crown and he is the face of that franchise. If they can get a monster package for him such as what the Rangers got for Texeira back in 2007, then I think Arizona should move him. But otherwise moving him just for the sake of moving him would be a bad move on the part of the Diamondbacks.
reds2012
Yeah I dont understand. He is a stud, who cares if he doesnt work hard he is still only 24 and this year is an “off” year and hes still batting 273! I dont see why they would want to trade him just because he doesnt get along with some important people. It would be like trading Brandon phillips because “he doesnt try hard” or “he doesnt get along with us”.
V. Mitchell May
If the Reds wanted Pierre, Kotsay, Quentin, etc., they should have signed them when they were trash heap free agents.
TophersReds
We already maxed out on our trash heap free agents when we signed Ludwick though…
Jay
He has done a fairly decent job too. At least a lot better than I was predicting. Nice catch Jocketty.
letsgogiants
To be fair, I don’t think anyone thought that Pierre or Kotsay would be as productive as they have been this year.
jewofa
Coco seems like a good fit. Veteran leader, leadoff batter, speed at the top of the line up, gold glove caliber CF and a manageable 2 year deal…
Dylan Ramirez
A’s are only 2.5 games out of the Wild Card I think they may hold on to Crisp.
jewofa
They aren’t even using him in CF, which is where he belongs, and have a log jam of OF prospects that could fill in. Besides, the fact that the A’s are in contention means they likely have more glaring needs to be taken care of and trading Coco could help fill those voids…just saying
letsgogiants
Crisp started out the season in LF because of Cespedes. However, after Cespedes went on the DL for the second time this season, Coco got more opportunities to play in center field which coincidentally was the same time he happened to get hot with the bat. Once Cespedes returned from the DL, Melvin decided to keep Crisp in center and move Cespedes to left. The way the A’s play the next two weeks will decide whether or not they become buyers or sellers.

Unless the rumor is true that Hamilton, Cingrani, & Corcino are untouchable, I can’t see any deal for Upton. But if we’re targeting players like Pierre & Kotsay, I’d have to say its true, they won’t be included in any deals.
That leaves players like Gregorious, Sulbaran, Joseph, LaMarre, Hoover, & H. Rodriguez as trade bait.
Josh Mohr
All those players will NOT be dealt, they are our future. Sulbaran and Soto could be moved
wouldyalookatthat
I hope this is just our attempt to get a LH bat off the bench and not the only move we make.
Joshua
Mark Kotsay is still in the league?
Nick Daniels
Didn’t Upton start his career as a shortstop? He is still young enough to be converted to another position. Maybe trade for him and convert him to 3B? He isn’t very good in the OF and maybe that’s why he is underperforming since they took him out of his original position.
SalvadorM
W. Venable for the reds
Jeff Snedden
I would imagine Mark Kotsay would be a “future considerations” or “cash” trade. Padres fans are seriously off their rocker with the way they overvalue some of these guys.
