11:45am: The Nationals and Rangers discussed Torrealba, but one person involved told Kilgore “it doesn’t look like a fit.”
TUESDAY, 8:49am: The Rangers and Nationals are expected to discuss Torrealba today, tweets Adam Kilgore of the Washington Post.
MONDAY, 10:25pm: The Rangers have designated catcher Yorvit Torrealba for assignment, Troy Renck of the Denver Post reports (on Twitter). Torrealba became expendable with the acquisition of Geovany Soto.
The Rangers are likely to trade Torrealba, MLB.com's T.R. Sullivan reports. The 34-year-old has a .236/.302/.342 batting line in 182 plate appearances this year.

That didn’t take long.

i wannq know why this other guy is so special…especially at .195.

Is Soto really such an upgrade over Torrealba?
karkat
Only in terms of control.

WAIT A MINUTE! Why would you acquire an automatic out and DFA someone who is hitting better? Teams should be putting in waiver claims for Torrealba, and I would be shocked if he wasn’t acquired off waivers.
Torrealba is currently hitting .236, and Soto .195.

“someone who is hitting better”
Because he’s not hitting better. Soto is OPSing .700 since coming back from injury. Not great but better than Torrealba’s .650 over the same time frame.

I bet the red sox trade shoppy than claim yorvit

Ok I get maybe the Rangers think they can get Soto back to where he was at in 08 but getting rid of a quality Catcher while you’re making a run at the playoffs for a possibly long term project seems silly.

I’m actually really surprised by this for some reason. I don’t know if it’s that we got rid of Torrealba or did it because we aquired Soto………

tx — I’m seriously with you here, man. After the Torrealba drop, I’m thinking that something else must have been going down inside the clubhouse that we’ll probably never hear about. As a third catcher and defensive specialist, I understand it — JD has been talking about that as a priority for weeks — but to immediately DFA Yorvit (yeah, I get the 40-man implications), and to do it so soon, it just smells like something internal/personal was going on that we weren’t privy to. That said, I still like Soto’s controlability after this year and his potential when exposed to Arlington. Brigham hit a logjam and it’s nice to get some value out of him and see the kid get a chance to compete on a rebuilding club.

The Padres need to pick up Torry.

If I were The SF Giants I would pick up Torrealba, He would give The Giants another catcher and it can allow Buster Posey to play 1st base and give Hector Sanchez a chance to rest. It would be a good move. I like the prospects of The Giants signing Lyle Overbay as he is a good contact hitter and we definitely need offense.

I wouldn’t mind the Nats picking up Torrealba.

I’m confused and a little sad about this. I like Yorvit. He’s always first on the steps to rub Beltre’s head or hand out high-fives. I guess there could be some clubhouse issues we don’t know about, but it sure doesn’t look that way to me. Maybe the team is holding a grudge over his altercation with the ump in Venezuela last winter.
Could just be something as simple as wanting a younger guy with more years of control, especially if they think Veet and Nap would both walk in FA. Or maybe they have some awesome blockbuster trade planned for tomorrow, with Veet as one chip.
Whatever. I’ll miss him.

Forgot to add: they didn’t need to move Yorvit in order to make room for Soto on the 40 man, because the kid they’re sending to the Cubs was on the 40 man. So the fact that they’re DFAing Yorvit indicates to me that they probably have a trade in mind. Hope it’s a good one.

Whiteside is the Giants backup at Catcher and Sanchez is at Triple-A.

Rockies should trade Hernandez, sign Torrealba for next year to back up Rosario.
