The Orioles have lost 17 of their last 24 games, but they're just half a game out of the Wild Card race, so their top baseball executive says the team’s future is now. Dan Duquette told Ken Rosenthal of FOX Sports that the Orioles are "going to try to do everything [possible] to get into the playoffs this year.” Here are today’s links…
- The White Sox agreed to sign Dominican corner outfielder Hanlet Otano, Ben Badler of Baseball America reports. The 16-year-old Otano has raw power from the right side, according to Badler.
- Austin Jackson, Mark Trumbo and Jason Kipnis make appearances in Dave Cameron's latest pieces about the MLB players with the greatest trade value.
- The Tigers, Red Sox and Dodgers figure to be among the most aggressive teams in summer trade talks, ESPN.com’s Buster Olney writes. The Tigers are pursuing starting pitching, Olney reported this morning.
- Dodgers chairman Mark Walter told Dylan Hernandez of the LA Times that the Dodgers won't pass up ways of improving their team this summer, even if it means boosting payroll. "I'm not trying to save a dollar," Walter said. "I'd rather say we have a great team and maybe spend a little too much."

The Orioles have a -57 run differential this year which is the 2nd worst in the AL. I’d be really surprised to see this team finish above .500. I was hoping for that too. Now just gotta hope the Pirates do.

I think the Dodgers need a Chase Headly-type player (Headly might be dangerous with the Padres want of prospects); someone with a decent batting average and can fit in near the top of the order.

Orioles should stay the course in their rebuilding process. The have a very good core. If any of their young arms had panned out, they’d be in much better shape to go for it all this year.

Just wondering, why is Joe Buck your avatar if you hate him?

If you can see by the beard I think he’s attempting to ridicule Mr.Buck.

Ehh, ain’t that a microphone?

The Orioles are “going to try to do everything [possible] to get into the playoffs this year.” Well saying that is one thing, doing that is another.
Putting a pitcher like Ayala in the game when there’s bases loaded and nobody out is never a good idea! Not even a little bit. Signing Endy Chavez for the fourth spot in your outfield is not indicative to me of doing “everything”. I could drone on and on, but if you have a 4 to 1 lead against a bad team, with no viable bullpen and you lose that looks bad no matter how you slice it. Duquette has done nothing to indicate, he is making an all out approach to the playoffs. It has me really agrevated. The other thing is even if we trade and get more pieces, the Oriole overall play has been terrible as of late. So unless the O’s start playing better, I don’t see why Duquette wants to make all these big moves.

Not sure how I feel about going “all out”

A couple of points: 1) The Orioles have a better record than they should. I’m sorry but it’s true. As MB923 pointed out, they have the AL’s second worst run differential.
2) Would you really want them to go all out? Going all out means giving up the farm and the O’s still have some gems there.

It is nice to see my ChiSox finally dip into the Latin American player pool. 3 in one season makes me excited! We can finally get some “rank” on our farm system…plus our draft is looking pretty good this year!

“the Dodgers won’t pass up ways of improving their team this summer, even if it means boosting payroll” Really? Youk was available for a Fernando autograph and a B level prospect. I guess the Dodgers missed that.
