The Indians are focused on trade candidates who are under team control beyond 2012, ESPN.com’s Buster Olney reports (on Twitter). This means players such as Shane Victorino aren’t ideal targets for Cleveland. Here are more links from around MLB for Thursday afternoon…
- Marco Scutaro is the most likely Rockies player to be dealt this month, Troy Renck of the Denver Post writes. The Nationals and Rays are among the teams watching Scutaro, Renck notes.
- The Twins are hoping Carl Pavano and Matt Capps get healthy and pitch well in August so they can pass the pitchers through waivers and consider trading them, Joel Sherman of the New York Post reports (on Twitter).
- The Orioles, who continue looking for a third baseman, would have "tried hard" to acquire Placido Polanco if the Phillies hadn't placed him on the disabled list, Danny Knobler of CBSSports.com reports (on Twitter).

Look, Gausmen is not ace quality, so send him to Sd for Headley and D’FA Reynolds or try to pass him through waivers to AAA to get his swing back like Lind. D’FA Betemit if not Reynolds. This Os team is now going to playoffs, so a guy like Polanco does not help for next year and is not doing any better than in-house options.

Gausmen would have to be a PTBNL for almost an entire year …

Yup. The Pete Incaviglia rule.

To every O’s fan who says Reynolds needs to be DFA’d:
Who plays first if he’s gone?

Davis…Thome…Betemit…1B isn’t the problem.

Lack of options is the problem.
If the O’s wanted Davis at first, they would put him there. As bad as Davis has been offensively this year, his bat is better than Reynolds. So why hasn’t he played first in months? There’s probably a reason.
Same goes for Betemit. His OPS is 50 points better than Reynolds. If he could play first base, he would. Especially considering how bad he is at third base.
And there’s no way Thome’s going to play first. The reason the Phils dealt him to an AL club was because it was proven that he can’t play the field any more.

After watching Wiggington play third for ONE GAME, I’m glad Polly can’t be trade. That guy must play with his glove on the wrong hand or something. He is brutal.

Have you ever watched Mark Reynolds? Ask an orioles fan how adept he is with the leather and Reynolds is raking in a cool 7.5m this year.

Reynolds at third is a train wreck. Reynolds at first really isn’t so bad.
Of course, a sub-.700 OPS from a supposed power hitter makes everything look ugly…

I doubt any team would have had to try too hard to get Polanco. A C-level prospect would have got it done in about five minutes.

I’m tired of Terry Ryan being so passive during the trade deadline. He quit when he didn’t want to make a decision on Santana all those years ago and he comes back and is screwing up our team! Yeah he got Willingham and Doumit in, who are 2 key bats in our lineup, but what we really need is pitching, and that’s an issue that has yet to be addressed even though it’s been a problem since last year!!! We need to be more aggressive and pursue these big names either via trade or free agency! It sickens me to see pitchers like Dempster and Garza go on the trade block and Ryan not even nibbling at them. Twins need to do what Fletcher and the Wild did, if they ever want to become a winning team again!

If anything, the Twins would be sellers if active at the deadline this year.

Tim as a fellow Twins fan, I feel your pain. I just don’t see a change in philosophy. Bill Smith rocked the boat by acquiring Young in a trade giving up Garza and the failed Santana Mets trade. He tried, but isn’t a legit evaluator of talent and thus failed with direction. Ryan is stand fast kind of guy unless its dumping salary and letting free agents walk. This team WILL NOT acquire good pitching prospects.

Scutaro for Dan Uggla? Uggla is struggling this year, but he will bounce back. Rockies aren’t going anywhere this year, and can wait till next year for him to unload in Coors Field.
User 4245925809
Scutaro was a salary dump prior to the season, even though he put up decent offensive numbers last year. He is making 6m, has little range and wnt for Clay Mortenson, a long reliever who has been at AAA Patucket half the year because the Sox are loaded on middle relievers.
How the Rockies think a SS/2b with little range can draw any kind of prospect package back is beyond me. The guy is 36YO.. I see no reason why he still wouldn’t be marginally above a salary dump type player. His numbers actually went DOWN at Coors field vs fenway, not the other way around.

The Pirates need to be going after Scutaro. Barmes is not getting it done.

Any ideas who the Tribe may target that is available with contract years left? Or is it just a “we’re not going to make any moves and this is our reasoning”
Would love to see them go after Justin Upton, but after the prospects we gave up for Ubaldo, I don’t know if the farm system can withstand what it might cost.
