The Padres are tied for last place in the NL West with a 34-53 record, but there's lots of intrigue for Padres fans this summer. Carlos Quentin, Chase Headley and Huston Street are among the players who figure to draw interest from rival teams as the July 31st trade deadline approaches. Here's the latest on the Padres…
- The Padres have scouted the Cardinals and will watch one of St. Louis’ top minor league affiliates this week, Derrick Goold of the St. Louis Post-Dispatch writes. Street, San Diego’s closer, could be targeted by the Cardinals in trade talks. He says he prefers to continue closing if he’s traded.
- Commissioner Bud Selig told reporters, including Scott Miller of CBSSports.com, that he doesn’t know if the Padres’ sale will be completed by the owners meetings scheduled for next month (Twitter link). "I understand they [still] have two or three weeks of work," the commissioner said.

How dare you, the Rockies are in the NL West basement.
sam_lammert
were finally going after someone useful. i actually really like this
sam_lammert
i can honestly say i dont pay much attention to the padres, what would they be asking for?
SDOurTeamOurTown
I honestly don’t pay much attention to the Cardinals … what do they have?
sam_lammert
pretty good pitching with miller, martinez, swaggerty, second base got wong, third base we have cox, i guess you could still consider matt adams a prospect hes at first base, in the outfield theres taveras, those would be our top overall, and of those id say miller wong and taveras are untouchable

Martinez is no longer untouchable? Last season when there were talks of Bell going to the Cardinals, it sounded like he was the second coming.
sam_lammert
i dont see him as untouchable, hes projected to be very good yes but i also see him as a very good trade piece that can be had for something we need
Beersy 2
I can tell you right now, if Martinez was offered for Street, you guys would have yourself a new closer. Now why can’t you and I be the GMs of these two teams? We’d already have a deal done. 🙂
sam_lammert
we would not have a deal done haha, cause martinez would never be offered for street, in a deal like for a reliever hes untouchable, for a top tier starter, he is not untouchable
Mickey Koke
Volquez and Street lol
sam_lammert
hahaha you wish
Beersy 2
Well then apparently we wouldn’t have a deal then. 🙂
JohnS
Cardinals don’t need a closer….
sam_lammert
second most blown saves in mlb. cardinals need a closer
JohnS
20 saves out of 24 opportunities… I can name a lot of teams that would love to have a guy with 20 saves at All Star Break! BTW… anybody can pitch in San Diego.
sam_lammert
they obviously dont trust him if they put other people in for the save…and he was also successful in coors
JohnS
His biggest year was 37 saves with 11 Blown Saves… I would hardly call that successful.
sam_lammert
it was also coors field

According to reports, they have been scouting my Pirates low A team in regards to a possible Quintin trade, so apparently major league ready isnt a must.

Saw footage during the All Star Game of Huston Street doing some charity work for a foundation of his. Off the field he looks like a nice guy and those types of intangibles along with the fact that he would add a young closer to a contending teams bullpen makes him the perfect bullpen piece to look to acquire. When you take a look at his WHIP, he’s definitely one of the games better relievers who has been very consistent outside of a few injuries here and there. If I were a team looking for Bullpen help, Street would be my number one target for sure. He’s been around and is highly touted.
Mickey Koke
What about Street for Allen Craig? Could be expendable with Berkman due back shortly after the All-Star break without giving up any top prospects and could provide some much needed production for the Padres and also insurance if they cannot extend Quentin.
sam_lammert
how would you feel about kelly and a lower level pitching prospect, kellys had some success in the majors in a couple starts
cardsfan1988
If we trade Kelly, who goes into the rotation without knowing when Garcia is coming back? The rotation is depleated enough without trading away the person we brought up to fill in in the rotation.
sam_lammert
im still seeing the cardinals going out and making a trade for a big name starter, at least im hoping
dvmin98
I’d take Craig. He’d surely like to come play at home!
cardsfan1988
Maybe expendable for this year and this year only…but Craig is a long term plan for the Cardinals at first next year with Berkmans contract expiring. Craig in my opinion is untouchable, over .300 average with 13 Hr and 45 Rbi in only 46 games. We would want a ton back for Craig, not just straight up for Street. Craig is cheap and extremely productive and only getting better.
Mickey Koke
Valid points.

Dear Bud,
Will you please stop allowing people that don’t have any money from buying baseball teams?
Thanks,

do you guys see the cardinals going after a guy like hamles?
Jeff Snedden
No way does St. Louis trade Allen Craig for a RP, that would be a historically bad trade for the Cardinals. Craig is a legit right-now star that is controlled trough 2017, and is a cornerstone to the future of that team. St. Louis is one of the top organizations in baseball because they know how to evaluate talent, not make hasty trades. Not a Cardinals fan, just an observation.

I could see the Cardinals trade Pete Kozma and Cox for Street. I think the Padres will be looking at Ryan Jackson in a Street deal (defensive shortstop who has shown a little with the bat the past couple of years). Cox would enable to the Padres to then move Headley for more prospects (possibly to Pittsburgh where they could get Marte and some pitching) and also trade Quentin to the Reds for more prospects. After this season, the Padres should boast the best farm system without question and have top prospects/youth for every position on the field.
Dylan Ramirez
Padres already have Gyorko (#50 prospect in baseball) in the system and Logan Forsythe in the majors. They already have the ammunition to move Headley if they want.
Also agree with Jeff below me that Allen Craig is going nowhere.
Tommy Ngo
I would take Cox and move him to second but I dunno if he would transition well.

I wouldn’t be surprised if they aren’t even looking at Street. Clayton Richard and Joe Thatcher make more since to me. Move Kelly to a relieve role and Cleto out of the pen. I know Kelly has pitched well but I think he could be “2011 Lynn like” out of the pen. Trade something like Gorgen, Freeman, Cleto, Reifer, Fornataro for Richard and Thatcher.
ace590
What about Street for Tyrell Jenkins straight up?

My bad on the double post lol

This could be the ideal time for Brynes to work some magic and get the Padres a couple OF prospects in exchange for the 3 mentioned above. Allen Craig would be sweet but everyone from the redbirds side on here seems to think that would never happen, I kinda like Marte from the Pirates although he could end up being the next Veneble……who knows
Jdobb
The Cardinals are sitting pretty right now with Mcclean,Burkman and Garcia coming back in July. I would hate for the Cardinals give up a big prospect BUT to get a Houston Street I think you have to make THAT move. Then Cardinals could have a great 7th and 8th inning guy in Motte. I would be willing to give Jenkins up for a PROVEN closer in Street.
JAmarcus
If the Padres don’t get new ownership before the trade deadline, all this trade speculation could be moot. Its frustrating, because the Padres need to make some tough financial decisions including whether or not to sign Quentin long term and build around him. Also, what about Headley? Can JB trade Headley without knowing what the new owner’s plan to do going forward?
Jdobb
That is a really good point! Unless new ownership approves it. Im sure they just want payroll down so they can build on a younger team.
