The latest notes and rumors from Danny Knobler of CBSSports.com…
- The Brewers hoped to market Francisco Rodriguez to teams seeking bullpen help, but that may be difficult given the right-hander’s recent struggles and $8MM salary. "Good luck to them," one scout told Knobler.
- The Tigers view Anibal Sanchez as a true rental player, Knobler writes (all Twitter links). They see the right-hander as a middle-of-the-rotation starter, but felt they didn’t have a strong chance of acquiring a true top-of-the-rotation starter this summer. The Tigers proposed the trade for Sanchez and Omar Infante last week.
- It now appears likely that trade candidate Edinson Volquez will stay in San Diego, Jon Heyman of CBSSports.com reports. The Padres intend to keep Volquez, who drew trade interest this summer, according to Heyman.

I seem to remember Tiger fans mocking Cub fans, “There no way you’re getting Turner for Garza!” Well, technically you were right. You get a similiar pitcher for one less year of control. Congrats on that.

LOL, we’d of took Garza, not Dempster.

Infante is at least equal value to Sanchez this year and is under control for another year… and they got a sandwich pick from the Marlins. The Tigers are going from 30th (last) in 2nd base performance, to well above average.
Garza and Barney would have netted exactly what the Marlins got (Turner and others). Theo is likely regretting not taking what Dombrowski was willing to give him.

My point is Tiger fans said Turner wouldn’t have been traded for the likes of just Garza/Barney (Sanchez/Infante) and it happened. Dombrowski would have BOTH Garza and Barney next year (which is important becasue they still have gaping holes in the offense this year with the poor performances they’re getting from RF & DH) and a pick for Graza if he left after 2013.

Hard for me to speculate about what the average fan thinks… but I think DD would have made the same deal for Garza/Barney instead of Sanchez/Infante. I think Theo is in the tough spot now.
Boesch is an extremely streaky hitter… he has hit over .350 lately with power. They also have enough quantity to play the hot hand in the corners now (Boesch, Dirks, Berry, Kelly, Raburn).
They will live with Delmon for the rest of this year. He is heating up as well… and the Tigers will hope for positive production (too much to hope for a repeat of the 5 Home Runs he had last post season). If they are very lucky, VMART comes back around Sept 15th.
I think the Tigers are hoping the “gaping holes” are more due to slumps that are now over (except Raburn, whose role has been minimized), than having the wrong players.

You don’t have to speculate what the average fan thinks. Go to the July 6th post titled “Tigers interested in Matt Garza”. It was the consensus opinion of the Tiger fans in that post.

This is a great trade for the Tigers. Unless we plan on going to a 6 man rotation where was Turner going? Smyly already will only get spot starts.
Smyly > Turner, for the foreseeable future
And we go into the second half with an actual 2B.

K-Rod for Heath Bell straight up.

Yeah… because everyone wants to take on the Marlins’ terrible Free Agent signings. We’ll go Gallardo for Buehrle too! He’s only due $48,000,000 over the next three years.

Why would the tigers trade Turner for a rental ? They have to resign Sanchez.
