6:55pm: GM Doug Melvin says that he is working on a trade involving Kottaras and hopes to complete it in a day or two, tweets Tom Haudricourt of the Journal-Sentinel.
11:03am: The Brewers announced that they designated catcher George Kottaras for assignment. In related moves, Milwaukee activated catcher Jonathan Lucroy from the 15-day disabled list, optioned infielder Jeff Bianchi to Triple-A and selected the contract of right-hander Jim Henderson.
Kottaras, 29, figures to draw trade interest in the coming days, when teams such as the Mets and Nationals could inquire about possible deals. He has a .209/.409/.360 batting line in 116 plate appearances this year, thanks to an impressive 25% walk rate. In parts of five MLB seasons, Kottaras has a .221/.326/.402 batting line.

Could this be like the Roberts situation?
MaCmAnSuX
I wouldn’t be surprised if he ends up in the same place as Roberts did too.

If he just slaughtered everyone as much as he does Pittsburgh, then he’d be the best catcher in history!

Blue Jays could use a good Canadian boy behind the plate after JPA went down last night.

The Real Greek God of Walks!

he’s in no way an upgrade over Gomes.

Alright – movement. Let’s keep the changes coming.

I can also suggest with the injury to Arencibia the Jays may be interested in him. Plus he is Canadian so that also does not hurt.

Kottaras could draw interest in the coming days? I’d be surprised if he wasn’t dealt by the end of the day, heck, even before today’s game. Teams need catchers, and we probably won’t be asking much.
Glad we made this move. Happy to have Luc back, and while I wanted to see Bianchi get more playing time, we need bullpen help more than we need him right now.
Gumby65
He should go to Boston just so they can play “Welcome back…” song.

Can Travolta throw out the opening pitch? Will George become a honorary “Sweathog?”
User 4245925809
Boston already has another backup they are looking to move in Shoppach and one that can actually hit at that. Might strike out more, but defense and hitting (power) far above George’s abilities.
craigcounsellhitsbombs
The guy’d be a good pickup for any team needing a catcher. Given more playing time, his average would probably be a lot higher. He just doesn’t have a place in Milwaukee right now. Luc and Maldonado are the future behind the plate.

The pride of Scarborough ontario!

I hope the Nats pick him up.
Slim_Hurley
I would have rather seen izturis go then bianchi. Theres a chance he could be the starting SS for them next year and he needs to get some big league ABs. He was a 300 hitter at Nashvile before being called up. Izturis has no place on a non contending roster.

If Cashman doesn’t make a push for Kottaras, it proves that Martin and/or Stewart have dirty pictures of him doing something worse than his affair.
sdsny
I was going to say the same thing…well not exactly. I don’t know anything about dirty pictures. Anyway, this has Yankees written all over it. Add the fact that Kottaras is a lefty, which certainly can’t hurt in Yankee Stadium.
levendis
he can be the Yankees starting catcher at this point
formerdraftpick 2
Wasn’t there a report that the Mets were interested in him a few weeks ago?

Kot’s: hate to see yo go, had some big hits for us…but were gearing up to make another run in the future. And small market teams like the Brewers have to do all they can to align the stars to get into a already corrupt playoff system! Tell whatever team for a compensatory pick…WE WANT YOUNG ARMS…GO CREW!
Jamespfunk
He’s going to the Nats for a bag of peanuts and a few balls.
XxMadDogxX
Whoever trades for him, has to take his personal pitcher too! it’s a 2 for 1
D.j. Wilson
Come on A’s, step in and get him so that Suzuki is expandable.

Brewers GM Doug Melvin said today Greinke will be traded. I say either to Baltimore,Texas, or St. Louis. An okay solid backup catcher Brewers could get it, Matt Treanor. If Jesus Flores wasn’t starting catcher for the National’s he’d be a good backup too. But they just need a solid catcher that’s a perfect fit for a backup. Treanor or Humberto Quintero would be a good fit.
Joey Doughnuts
Grienke and Kottaras to Chicago. Come on Doug.
aemoreira81
The Mets could use Kottaras—he would be an upgrade over automatic out Mike Nickeas on days when Josh Thole does’t start.
