The Braves are working to acquire a veteran stopgap-type shortstop to fill in while Andrelton Simmons is on the disabled list, Jim Bowden of ESPN.com and MLB Network Radio reports (on Twitter). The Braves are hoping to complete a deal in the next 72 hours, Bowden writes.
Atlanta manager Fredi Gonzalez said yesterday that the Braves were considering internal options (presumably Tyler Pastornicky and Josh Wilson) as well as trade options, according to Carroll Rogers of the Atlanta Journal-Constitution. Backup shortstop Jack Wilson figures to get extra playing time with Simmons injured. The list of potentially available shortstops includes some veteran options that could interest GM Frank Wren.
TheReturnOfMrBlanks
Jason Bartlett for 1 Chipper autographed game used bat. Done Deal!
roberty
Throw in one 1990 Donruss Dave Justice rookie card and you’ve got yourself a deal.
Mark
Who are some of the potential trade targets that they are interested in?
craigkimbrelfan
No one out there would possibly fit Wren’s criteria…
tomymogo
Marco Scutaro, Willie Bloomquist seem to make the most sense to me
BLB25
Scutaro seems like he’d cost an awful lot in trade for a team thats only gonna use him full time for a month. Don’t the Braves want to save their trade assets for a piece like Greinke?
craigkimbrelfan
There’s absolutely zero available that is going to meet Wren’s criteria. He wants an upgrade from what they have available in-house, with a team-friendly contract, but doesn’t want to give up anything to acquire it. Gee…who wouldn’t want that?
Mark
Yeah that pretty much leaves no one
Brv Rocks
That sounds like Brendan Ryan. He certainly fits both criteria…..not that it’s hard to be an upgrade over the Wilson twins and Pastornicky. Personally, I hope they get Scutaro….except he makes a lot of money this year.
leachim2
Bartlett for Teheran and Heyward.
craigkimbrelfan
lol
J.A.
Man that is completely unfair. Can’t believe you would even think a trade like that could happen. Obviously Hanson has to be in or no deal.
AaronAngst
Will give you Cesar Izturis, Cody Ransom, and a case of Miller 64 in exchange for the elimination of the “tomahawk chop.”
Brv Rocks
No, prefer the tomahawk chop.
TDKnies
I guess Scutaro would be my first choice, but I loathe the idea of trading any decent prospects for a guy we’ll only need for six weeks.
craigkimbrelfan
My first choice would be to persuade Miami to give Infante back to us…
TDKnies
I was going by the list of the site’s “potentially available SS” but I like your idea more.
craigkimbrelfan
You may be right with Scutaro. Something stirring in Colorado right now…I have kind of a hunch it may be him. He would answer a lot of questions…
abravesfan
I would like to see someone like Brendon Ryan for a low level RP prospect.
bighiggy
how about the cards trade you tyler greene for a prospect in your top 40? would you do it?
Vogelscheuche
I hear the Blue Jays have a pretty decent shortstop on a team friendly deal…
Colin Christopher
Yeah, I heard that too. I also heard that, despite having all the talent in the world, he’s putting up mediocre stats and is wearing thin the patience of team management. Gee, that sounds familiar…
Chris
bet the braves wish they would have traded for nunez now.
yeah i know nunez has had some issues with the errors, but i blame that on him being moved around all over the field every game. he never gets a concistent start at just one position. Nunez and phelps for Minor. lol * sarcasticly speaking of course*
C.S.
in all honesty that would not be such a bad deal. braves give nunez the starting job every game and he would improve defensively. Phelps really has not been bad what so ever for the yankees whether its coming out of the pen or even starting. he is 1-3 with a 3.05 ERA and in 41 IP he has 42 K’s and 17 walks. so it would give the braves a every day SS and a decent starting pitcher for minor
J.A.
“in all honesty that would not be such a bad deal”
You’re right, it would be an incredibly horrible deal.
Alan Davydov
I wouldn’t even put Minor’s name in a Greinke deal. I still believe he will be a great pitcher for years to come.
erm016
No, he won’t. At least, he won’t do what Greinke will/can do in Atlanta.
paulyicecubes
Is there really a better 1 month rental out there than Jack Wilson? He won’t hit much of course, but they weren’t expecting much offense from Simmons either. Wilson can still pick it at short.
Colin Christopher
Wilson’s defense has seriously declined over the last two years. If they’re going to go with a shortstop who can’t hit, they might as well trade for Brendan Ryan, because at least he saves the runs he can’t produce.
BLB25
It doesn’t seem like it to me. The team friendly contract and not costing much in trade kinda narrows it down to Cody Ransom types and I don’t really see how theyre better than what the Braves already have.
Jesse
Well Braves fans you better hope you dont get Yuni Betencourt from the Royals with the way that the two teams like to swap players.
RiverKKiller999
Heh, yeah…I think Wren is shooting for a better defensive replacement than an offensive replacement right now as a stopgap till Simmons gets back.
Alan Davydov
Brendan Ryan. When Simmons got hurt, his name instantly popped in my head.
Dom Augustine
please be Clint Barmes lol
Harrison
I’d trade you mike aviles….
Todd Colvin
would take him in a min
craigkimbrelfan
Some confusion going on in the Rockies clubhouse right now with Rutledge being called to Denver and no roster moves being announced…hmmm.
bbxxj
I’m hoping it’s one of those small under the radar deals that make a big difference in the end like Ryan and League for a few decent but not top prospects.
Paul Baum
Yuni NOW!
Todd Colvin
no way
corey23
escobar or gonzales…. oh wait nm
Brian Ginn
Escobar. Wait, nvm. uh… Alex Gonzo? Wait, NVM. Eh, we’ll just settle with Wilson Betemit. Wait, nvm…
ByeByeREX
How about M. Izturis from LAA? Team friendly, better depth and the angels really have no need for him any more.
cookmeister
was going to say the same thing. pretty solid player when he gets regular time. Angels wouldn’t ask for much in return i would imagine
BLB25
he is playing basically every other day
progmatinee
Here’s a totally impossible trade, but as a Rockies fan who would be willing to do it:
Tulo, Cuddyer and Scutaro for Freeman, Uggla and Jurrjens.
Or if you want Scutaro only straight up for Jurrjens.
Javier Mejia
lol no way.
progmatinee
From your reply I can’t even tell which side you’re no waying on. :lol
Its obviously not going to happen, but its a pretty equivalent trade, IMO. Uggla and Cuddyer are pretty much the same. Cuddyer moves to 1st for the Braves. Freeman is probably a better offensive player than Tulo, but Tulo plays a premium position. The problem is both players are the faces of the franchises for the future. On the field I think its even.
Mike Waszak
We’ve got a great defensive shortstop in Simmons and good offensive production in Freeman & Uggs…I don’t know how in the world this deal would possibly make sense for the Braves.
dudemanbro
why would a rockies fan want to trade tulo?
Brv Rocks
As a Braves fan I would do that trade in a heartbeat, but the Rockies would laugh at the proposal.
I would also trade Jurrjens for Scutaro. The salaries match up for the Braves. However, again, the Rockies would say “no way” to that too.
ATLRoAcH
I wish they would put Prado at short and platoon left. Prado is more than capable of playing at short.
TDKnies
eh… Usually if you’re capable of playing a good SS, you aren’t spending multiple seasons playing another position, especially if you can also hit.
Matt Newton
Based on what? He’s not played SS in the majors during his career. He’s not quick enough to be a shortstop and has very little experience there. He’s better suited for LF and 3B right now.
*My bad,he played two games there in 2008. Still don’t think he’d work out there well.
ATLRoAcH
I remember watching Prado play those two games at SS and he looked good there. I just think that it’s worth trying. He has quick reaction, a good glove and a good arm. I don’t see why he couldn’t do it. I’m fully convinced Prado can play at every position. Maybe not great at every position but good.
CowboyJames
Prado is a fine athlete and ballplayer, however…HE ABSOLUTELY CANNOT PLAY SHORTSTOP!!
CowboyJames
…on an everyday basis that is, sure you can plug him in at short when in crisis…but thats about it
ATLRoAcH
It looks like we’re going to see how he does because Wilson got hurt and they just put Prado at short.
CowboyJames
Well then…hows this for irony
ATLRoAcH
First chance he got he made a real nice play. A back handed flip to Uggla.
CowboyJames
Don’t take me the wrong way. I dont want to go out of my way to dogg Prado or defend my earlier statements because I dont think I need to. I just want to point out that that ball was not hit very hard and that it was just ONE play
CowboyJames
Also he’s one of my favorite players in the game so I dont mean to slight him. Just saying hes not an everyday option at short in anybody’s world. If given the oppurtunity he would prove it.
ATLRoAcH
I know he’s not an everyday SS. I also know that wasn’t the greatest play at short ever but it was still a nice play. Especially for guy who hasn’t played that position since 2008. I think he’s good at short. Not great but good. We’ll see what happens. We know the Braves are going to get a SS now. They’ll call someone up too. It sucks that Wilson got hurt. I didn’t want his bat in the line up but he is really good on defense and I didn’t want him to get hurt.
tomr
I’m sure the Angels would be willing to move Maicer Izturis. He probably wouldn’t cost a ton either.
Crewers
We will pay YOU to take Izturis and Ransom from us
Bryce Perkins
what about Tyler Greene from the Cardinals? not a good hitter, but solid fielder and can steal bases and also can play multiple positions. Could get him cheap too.
Mike Waszak
Solid fielder and can play multiple positions…sounds a lot like Jack Wilson to me.
J.A.
Except for the whole “solid fielder” part, yeah, a lot alike…
Rbraz
Jamey carroll?
Pronk
Willie Bloomquist could be available with Stephen Drew back from the DL. He’s hitting .294 this season and has great versatility. Solid bat off the bench
User 4245925809
Mike Avilles was put up several posts above probably as a joke, but Boston may move him and go with Iglesias and his glove only approach now that Ells is back and CC any day now, plus Pedroia is now expected back sooner than expected.
They don’t need his decent xbh and power bat like they did and his habit of not taking pitches is not in the Boston tradition, it might be tolerated elsewhere.
Todd Colvin
ill take avilles in a min cause he good and look everytime some one leaves boston they start on the rise look at youk!!
User 4245925809
He is already at career numbers and Boston didn’t give up anything to get him anyway…
chris_synan1
I could see Alex Gonzalez as a fit
Sports Fan
nooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooo hahahahahahaha
Tom
Cedeno for O’Flaherty
Brv Rocks
No!!!
Tom
Why not? Fine Chad Durbin?
3runhomer
What about Stephen Drew from the DBacks? With the recent comments from the owner, I could see them wanting to bring in something before he walks in the offseason. His backups hit well while he was recovering, and there’s been recent talk in AZ circles of them moving him.
tomymogo
they could platoon Drew and Wilson. Though Drew has 3.8 million left on his contract this year(including his 1.35 buyout), if D-Backs send half of it(which is basically the buyout +500 k) maybe the Braves can give them a reliever like Cory Gearrin
Christopher Moore
it is probably a trade for carlos gonzalez from the rockies just a guess since they called up rutledge but we will see.
progmatinee
not all Venezuelans use the name Carlos Gonzales.
tomymogo
Robert Andino, Yuneisky Bethancourt? Bloomquist, Drew, Scutaro, everybody else is not fit or available
Rangersalchamps
Andrus or Profar for Heyward? Who
Hangs up first
CowboyJames
Uh….
Jason Edward Nunnally
Well wilson just got hurt so better be getting on something quick if its serious
3runhomer
What happened to Wilson?
harmony55
Felix Hernandez, Brendan Ryan and Brandon League for Jason Heyward, Mike Minor and Tyler Pastornicky. Who hangs up first?
CowboyJames
Sick…I cant decide who hangs up first. It’d be hard to give up all the potential in JHey but Dayam…I think as the Braves you require a better position player than Ryan. But then that makes the deal un-appealing to the M’s…Interesting hypothesis
erm016
Seattle hangs up first. Braves do that deal in a heart beat. I would.
harmony55
Given the years of control, ages and salaries, the Braves might hang up first.
bravesfan22 2
Wilson dislocated his finger, so we really need to make a move at SS. No time to wait around Wren.
Nick P
Stephen Drew, a Georgia guy, may end up in ATL, but he won’t bring too much in return because Drew is unlikely to get the 2-pick compensation for ATL when he goes FA this winter…
Hoosierdaddy92
How about Jhonny Peralta and Ryan Raburn for Martin Prado?
