The Athletics announced that they designated first baseman Kila Ka'aihue for assignment. They selected the contracts of Brandon Moss and Evan Scribner and placed Andrew Carignan on the 15-day disabled list in related moves.
Ka'aihue appeared in 39 games for the A's this year, posting a .234/.295/.398 batting line in 139 plate appearances. The 28-year-old has a .687 OPS with 15 home runs in 465 career plate appearances for the Royals and A's. Oakland acquired him from Kansas City for Ethan Hollingsworth last September.

kind of surprising. So is moss going to play first?
melonis_rex
I assume so. There’s not another 1B on the roster, and Moss has been playing 1B in AAA.
RocknRollFan77
Moss tore up Spring Training and earned a spot, outplaying most of the players who are now on the roster, but they had their outfield already set and didn’t give him the spot he had earned. He hit over .400 most of spring and was hitting over .300 at AAA. He has a clause in his contract that he can get his outright release if he so choosed if they didn’t call him up by June 15. Knowing they didn’t have room for him in the outfield, they stuck him at first in AAA recently to see if he could get the job done. Obviously he did because that’s where they’re putting him.
Ka’ahuie’s average and OBP were low and he’s really streaky. So bye, bye! Chris Carter is hitting hr’s and knocking in a lot of RBI’s (as usual) at AAA. So if Moss doesn’t work out or gets hurt and Ka’ahuie ends up being claimed off waivers and they are tired of giving Derrek Barton chances, they can always call Carter up.

Color me not surprised.
AAAA 1B #3 – Gone.
Of course, he’s being replaced with Brandon Moss, but at least Moss has absolutely destroyed AAA.

so has kila. and so has brandon allen

Sweeeeet!!!!!!

DFA’s All the Players!

How unfortunate for him, just days before his wife is expecting twins. Ouch. But yeah, underperforming, although not sure if Moss will do any better.
corey23
what’s minor league pay, 75k a year? i think he’ll be alright
itsmewade
That’s an 85% pay cut at least.
Matthew
Didn’t they just announce he was going to be their starting first baseman when they sent Barton down less than a week ago?
oaklandfan22
Ya, but they were both doing terrible, they needed to change things up.
Randy
can’t believe they did not call carter up insted but i will vomit if they call that loser barton up ever agin
Iconoclast17
+1,000 on Barton comment.
On Carter (and taylor) I’m afraid neither may be major league material—especially Taylor. Moss may as well get his turn in the musical chairs 1B game BB’s playing. We knew this was likely when the season began with AAA talent across the board and Beane refusing to part with Mr. troll for wal or strike out. Sigh.
Bobby
Sorry Kila, i hope it works out better with the next team.
bigmike04
baseball-reference.com/minors/player.cgi?id=carter… out carter stats, not doing so good to get the call up.. Thought i do wonder if Kila does accept his outright assignment to Sacromento…

Kila is a terrible 1b. He missed covering the bag last noight and against the twins he misplayed a DP which would have ended the game instead the A’s lost. Moss is being rewarded for hitting well in AAA.

280 in the minors isnt hitting “well” in my book so I am confused to why everyone thinks Moss is doing well…
Manny should learn first

I do question Billy on this one because we just sent Barton down and gave Kila the full-time 1B job. He was 3-8 on his last two games against Texas, one hit being a 2 run shot. I am disappointed. He could have been given another week or two. I suppose Moss is good at 1B though I only knew him as an OF in Pittsburgh when he took my boy Craig Monroe’s job.
The way I am seeing it right now, Moss included, we have 7 OF-eligible players on the MLB roster and not 1 true 1B, not to mention we will have #8 when Man-Ram arrives…

I’m happy for Moss, and hope he does well with this opportunity, but his record with the Pirates doesn’t bode well.
lautrec
We watched Kila enough years in KC to see this coming for the A’s. He hits in AAA and nobody notices how bad he is defensively. He gets to the Show, and can’t get on base and can’t really hit. But at least he backs that up with horrible defense….ugh, Kila is a nice guy, but as Rex Hudler says, “You got to go!”
xbalanque2012
Don’t be surprised if a Japanese team makes play for him in the near future
bluesbreaker
Moss is no prize catch either, A’S are notorious for picking BAD PLAYERS !!
