The Red Sox have removed left-hander Justin Thomas from their 40-man roster, Alex Speier of WEEI.com tweets. In corresponding moves, the Red Sox optioned Clayton Mortensen to the minor leagues and selected the contract of Daniel Nava. It's not clear if the Red Sox designated Thomas for assignment or released him.
Thomas, 28, appeared in seven games for the Red Sox this year, allowing ten hits and two walks in 4 2/3 innings while striking out four. He has a 4.14 ERA with 8.1 K/9 and 3.8 BB/9 in eight seasons as a minor leaguer.
Why did they send down Mortenson?
He doesn’t give up enough runs and makes it seem like Bobby V. kind of knows what he is doing.
Yup. Â Poor fellow just didn’t fit in….
This is pitiful. The Sox should DFA Albers and Miller and make Mortensen and Tazawa permanent fixtures in the ‘pen.
I guess it’s an options thing, but it’d be nice to be able to hold onto the relievers who actually earned a spot in the pen.
Albers ONE bad outing came recently. Up until then he has thrown well all season.
Albers is the new Tim Wakefield. It doesn’t matter how bad he pitches, he will always be on the roster. And to think, Luis Ayala was out there all winter
He has pitched a ton in the last couple days (three innings again yesterday), so he wouldn’t be available for today anyway, and he’s also the only guy in the ‘pen with options (other than Aceves who is the closer right now).
I wouldn’t blame Bobby on this one. Sox management don’t have a clue.
In Boston, $170M can only buy you a AAAA team. You gotta shell out the big bucks for a Major League Team.
It was good to see thomas unloaded, but why oh why for Nava??
“Let’s send down our most reliable reliever to call up a fifth outfielder that will provide little to no value! Meanwhile, we can keep using Padilla, Miller, and Albers late in the game! Brilliant!”
Isn’t it the pitching that is killing us…literally? Don’t we need more pitching? The bats seem to be holding their own
For the love of God anyone but Nava!
Also in Red Sox news, their announcer died.
