Dodgers Have Made Offer To Roy Oswalt

By Zachary Links | May 29, 2012 at 7:40am CDT

TUESDAY: While the Dodgers did make Oswalt an offer, it came a while ago and the sides were far apart, Jon Heyman of CBSSports.com tweets.  The Rangers are seen as the favorite to land the right-hander.

MONDAY: The Dodgers have made an offer to Roy Oswalt, according to Tim Brown of Yahoo Sports (via Twitter).  The Rangers, who are likely Oswalt's preferred team, are still in mix among other clubs.

Yesterday, it was reported that the Dodgers inquired on the veteran at one point but didn't appear to be involved any longer.  The Brewers also checked in on Oswalt but didn't feel that his salary could fit into their budget.  A major league source told Nick Cafardo of the Boston Globe that Oswalt's preferred destinations are Texas and St. Louis, just as they were during the offseason.

Thank GOD! Lily’s injury must be serious then. If this were to happen the Dodgers would have a legitimate #2-#3 behind Kershaw and Capuono

How can the Rangers be Oswalt’s preferred team when he’s publicly stated he only wants to pitch in the NL…

Because he’s familiar with the area (and from nearby Mississippi) and has a relationship with Rangers’ pitching coach Mike Maddux.

I’m down with Oswalt. He almost certainly has to be a better option than Billz or the Harrangatang.

Funny. Seems like*Harrangatang” always seems to do well when am bored and watch an LAD game he is pitching.. Then think his last gem watched pitch was against the hapless Padres also…

As much as I like Oswalt, I feel the Dodgers should give Eovaldi a shot.

That might happen. However, Eovaldi really only has 2 pitches. Won’t take long for hitters to figure him out.

I don’t get the interest in Oswalt. He’s hardly ready to take over for Lilly unless Lilly is going to be out for a long time, and there’s no indication of that so far. If they get Oswalt, who is the candidate for moving to the bullpen when they have both Oswalt and Lilly in the rotation?

maybe they just eat Harang’s deal or move him to the pen. idk

Harang is doing his job so far. It doesn’t make much sense to me to move a starter who is good for 200 innings into the pen. Eating two years of salary doesn’t really make sense either. If they do this deal it will sure be interesting.

Lilly’s gonna be a short-term thing; if Oswalt can be had, hopefully they can move Chad Billingsley to somewhere for a fresh start, maybe pick up a bat on a contract swap… Like for Youk.

Billz to the Cubs for Dempster is what I’m hoping for.

If the Dodgers have made an offer to Oswalt, I would think that means Lilly’s issue may not be a short term thing.

If Oswalt only wants to play for the stated two teams, why is his agent even talking to anyone else?

Leverage and pricing the market. He can go back to the teams Oswalt prefers to pitch for and say “Roy would really prefer to come to your team, but the Dodgers are offering $X. You’re going to have to get close to that.”

Hmm…is it more about the where or the how much with Oswalt?

Doesn’t matter. To his agent, it’s only about the how much. Even if Roy has no intention of ever signing with the Dodgers, his agent will still use them for leverage against teams Roy DOES want to play for.
