The Athletics announced that they claimed left-hander Travis Blackley off of waivers from the Giants. The A's moved Joey Devine to the 60-day disabled list to free up a 40-man roster spot in a corresponding move. The team will announce a corresponding 25-man roster move once Blackley reports to his new club.
Blackley, 29, allowed seven hits and five earned runs in five innings for the Giants before getting designated for assignment two days ago. He has a 3.98 ERA with 7.7 K/9 and 3.5 BB/9 in ten minor league seasons.
This marks the third time this year the Athletics have claimed an Australian-born player, as MLBTR's Transaction Tracker shows. They claimed Rich Thompson from the Angels and Luke Hughes from the Twins back in April.

Ok seriously….why? norberto and fuentes and figueroa have been pretty decent lefties out of the pen, our problem is mostly in the righties like balfour and carignan (and when he was up FDLS)
D.j. Wilson
Completely agree. Bob Melvin said having 3 lefties was a luxury now we have 4. We are in contention! We don’t need any more losers here.
Snoochies8
I’m sorry, but we’re not contending right now, playing very well and playing above our ability, but not contending. i’m still in the mindset that at the trade deadline we’ll most likely be sellers.
but it’s definitely true that right now, and probably moving forward, one thing that we’ll be pretty strong on is lefty relievers.
melonis_rex
Agree with the A’s are not contending, but I don’t think the A’s are playing above ability.
The only position player who’s obviously overachieving is Reddick, but he also posted above .200 ISOs in the minors so he has some legit power potential (obviously not this much though). A’s 3B as an aggregate are still some of the worst in the majors, in spite of Inge’s HR heroics. You have Weeks and Pennington underachieving, and Cespedes is still a wildcard.
The team was going to be difficult to predict due to the massive number of unknowns, and even moreso now. They could lose 100 or they could hover around .500 or better. Who knows?

Figueroa isn’t very good. neither is Fuentes, who could be trade-bait in a few months. The A’s have Blevins, too as a L reliever. Wish Beane would get a major league quality 1Bman next.
Snoochies8
fuentes has been our second best reliever so far behind cook, but i agree that he’ll probably be trade bait. he’s a different pitcher from the fuentes of last year, partly because the velocity is back up above 90 mph. figueroa is good, he has dominant stuff and just needs to get it a little more under control. blevins is odd, he’s got a good k/bb ratio, but he’s been pretty homer prone so far in a SSS. Norberto has also been a pretty solid lefty. there really wasn’t any need to get blackley
also kila’s been pretty at least league average so far….

Have fun with his 9.00 era k thanks.

Saw that when you commented. THOUGHT it was humor. Nice call Lastings.

If he were a righty, he would have cleared waivers…or maybe Oakland is really that desperate.
norcalbowler76
He’s already been with the organization once before… He will spend a day or two up in Oakland, at the most through the weekend cause of the A’s/Giants series and be DFA’ed again and sent to Sacramento.
