The Angels have placed outfielder Torii Hunter on the restricted list due to personal reasons and plan to select the contract of Ryan Langerhans from Triple-A Salt Lake, according to Tim Mead of the Angels (via Twitter). Hunter's Texas-based son was charged with a crime earlier today, according to a report from NBC Dallas Fort Worth.
Hunter, 37 in July, is in the final year of a five-year, $90MM pact. So far this year, the outfielder is hitting .256/.328/.413 with five homers in 33 games. Players on the restricted list do not count toward a team's 25-man or 40-man roster.

Another one? Hope everything is alright..

His son was arrested. Hang in there Torii!!!

Any one know why?

From what I hear this is something major. I’ll let MLBTR post the details.

Wow, apparently one of his sons are 1 in 5 Texas high school students arrested for alleged sexual assault.
Melvin McMurf
sexual assault of a child….
melonis_rex
Hunter’s son is 17, above age of consent in Texas.
“Child” could very easily mean a 15 or 16 year old (Not that that makes it OK, if he actually did it).
aemoreira81
Probably non-consensual if he did it though…it does note that 5 were arrested.
I cannot imagine what Torii Hunter is going through right now…raising your child and then seeing this happen. His son was considering playing football at Oregon – he can kiss that goodbye.

Even if it was consensual, it’s statutory rape if she’s underage.
aemoreira81
There is a 3-year window in Texas (i.e., if she was less than 1095 days younger than him, it’s okay). But given that it was 5 arrested, this points to a forcible act if the details on KXAS are correct.

It’s being reported that his son was 1 of 5 Texas high schoolers arrested for sexual assault.

wow, thats brutal.

The restricted list seems to be getting a lot more use this season

At least Torii can take a break from the pathetic baseball the Angels are playing right now. All the best to him though this. It’s gotta be tough.

I’m sure if he had a choice he would prefer to endure thru the on field struggles rather than to see his son tied up into something like this. Not that it is at all excusable but sexual assault can be as simple as groping a girl but the first thing we tend to think is rape. Again, no type of sexual assault is tolerable but I can only imagine the shame he must feel, even if his son is guilty or innocent.

Wow how horrible. Can’t imagine how hard that would be having your kid be in deep trouble like that. Hoping for a speedy resolution for all involved.

Wow. As much as I hate all Angels players (Rangers fan here), this is really upsetting. Hunter is one of the most respected players in MLB.
My prayers are with you and your family, Torii. Hope everything gets settled soon.

No prayers for the girl, eh?
Kurisu Rg
Yes, I should pray for the girl, too. You’re right.

Reading this on SB Nation’s LA site, this is what they are saying, via KXAS:
Four of those arrested are charged with sexual assault of a child and the fifth is charged with unlawful restraint, McHone said. Two of those arrested are adults, 17-year-old Garrick White and 17-year-old Darius McClinton-Hunter. Both White and Hunter are both charged with sexual assault of a child, a 2nd-degree felony. This sounds like a gang rape incident if the facts are true, although I cannot judge without more details. I feel really sorry for Torii Hunter at this time, as this doesn’t sound like a quick resolution matter.

you can’t always blame the parents. Sometimes the kid is a bad seed to begin with. How many times have you seen kids commit crimes and you meet the parents and can’t figure out why the kid turned out the way they did since the parents are very nice stable people.
I believe in many cases that criminals are born.
This sounds like a gang rape. I feel sorry for Tori. If his son did this , he has brought great shame and disgrace to his Father and family. And if this is true , he deserves whatever happens to him.
Sexual assault is intolerable and should be treated as the major felony it is .

I agree wholeheartedly with everything you said. There are times when you can’t account for why someone turned out badly when they had (and continue to have) almost every advantage in life. This also is true of the reverse: that there are times when it is amazing how well someone turned out despite having major disadvantages that would trip others up – and ironically, Torii Hunter is actually one of these.
You are right to say that his son has brought shame upon the family, but for everything Torii has achieved as a person, he has many reasons to stand tall. When this is all over I hope he will.
