Let's keep track of the day's outright assignments right here…
- Nate Spears has cleared waivers and been outrighted to Triple-A by the Red Sox, tweets Peter Abraham of The Boston Globe. Mike Andrews of SoxProspects.com first reported the news (on Twitter). Spears, 26, was designated for assignment when the Red Sox acquired Marlon Byrd. The utility man has not reached base in eight big league plate appearances over the last two seasons.

Poor guy still hasn’t gotten his first hit.

He should have never had the chance in the 1st place.. Poor roster choice to call up, even in an emergency situation. Ciriaco played the L/S IF positions and has terrific speed and neither can hit. At least Ciriaco could have came in and stolen a base as a pinch runner for say.. Ortiz/Youk/Agone…

Spears is probably firmly planted in Pawtuckett the rest of his career

I just think it kind of sucks that he’s been called up at least twice now and still hasn’t gotten a single hit. Hah, poor dude.

Yeah and he may never get another opportunity again. Who knows? Was going to say remember a kid named Roger LaFrancois spent an entire season (1982) on the Sox roster without a hit, but he did actually get 4 after just now looking it up.
This was a really nice kid, remember talking to him at ST when he was a really young minor leaguer and was as nice as could be when he was 1st drafted.

Yeah, I just wish he could get one hit, ‘ya know?
