The Orioles announced that they designated left-hander Dana Eveland for assignment. The move creates 40-man roster space for infield prospect Zelous Wheeler, who was claimed off of waivers from the Brewers in a corresponding move.
The Orioles acquired Eveland from the Dodgers in December and agreed to terms with him on a one-year, $750K deal later on that month. The 28-year-old spent part of the 2011 season with the Dodgers, posting a 3.03 ERA with 4.9 K/9 and 1.8 BB/9 in 29 2/3 innings. He spent most of the season starting at Triple-A Albuquerque, where he posted a 4.38 ERA with 6.3 K/9 and 3.6 BB/9 in 154 innings.

Curious why Dan Duquette gave the Dodgers two prospects for him this winter; Dana EvelAAAnd is nothing more than organizational depth at this point in his career.
Jon Glorioso
Because A) they weren’t prospects, they were young versions of Dana Eveland a.k.a AAA Depth B) It was Duquette’s first move after a decade away from the job. He probably didn’t realize how easy acquiring Eveland types is these days C) He’s a lefty and all the Orioles have as far as bullpen leftys go is Troy Patton and D) Eveland was good for the Dodgers last year and performed well at the best hitting park
With all that said, it’s better to realize you made a mistake and correct it- then stubbornly stick by your bad decisions. Go O’s!
Lefty
Because Duquette is a Balloon Head that’s why.
Although, I think he did ok with the Chen signing.
Wada still makes no sense and he might have gotten lucky with Paulino because Teagarden hasn’t looked like “The Answer” for our back-up catching position.

4.38 at Albuquerque is even better than the 3.03 at the big league level. He’ll get work.

No big deal and will see more flopsies like this get the axe before ST is over.. Everyone knows this..
The REAL shockers have not even begun yet as teams have not gotten CLOSE to 25-27 # yet.. Just wait, we will see some big names over the next 3 days.
As for giving up 2 non prospects for a has been? every team does that.

Jarret Martin actually was a legitimate prospect

It’s funny Silver this is what Duquette said a few months ago in an interview: When it comes to the closer role, are you comfortable with the pitchers you have right now for that spot, or is it a place where you see that an upgrade is necessary?
We need to build our pitching staff, but we need to build the innings with our starting pitching first. Once we do that reasonably well, I think we’ll look at a closer. We have a little more depth to our staff, but like any good pitching staff, you need to have a thousand innings going into the season. If you look at the left-handers we’ve picked up, they’ve pitched closed to 200 innings. [Tsuyoshi] Wada pitched 205 innings [in Japan], counting the playoffs. [Dana] Eveland pitched 185.
Our Closer’s still stink, although I would like to see Simon be given a chance again. However, Wada either been injured or complaining about the heat or wasn’t confident about being able to go every five days.
As for Eveland….well I think I have said enough about him.
Lastly, I think Tyler Henson had some potential and I was miffed that they traded him and quite “Frankly”, I still am!

I know Shaky was brutal during his tenure with the O’s and probably overpaid, but he would probably come back for a fraction of what he took from them the last 2 seasons and is far better than gregg. Other closers have been moved this past winter and the price was low.. Bailey.. melencon.. The opportunities have been there.
Duke has been working on the farm am pretty sure and THAT is his focus, not trying to make this team competitive this season. I don’t like seeing the orioles lose either and maybe it’s hard to see from the hard core O’s fans, but like this team from decades back as well, but there is just -0- way this team is going to be good for a few seasons.
Let him work over the far, International arena and he is going to fill up the MLB team with people you don’t want to see.. Trust me on that.. it’s the way he is.. Many Sox fans didn’t care for him either and I was probably in the minority who DID like the way he operated, but like some O’s fans, did grow tired of watching the constant parade of has beens moving onto the roster while he was building.
Once he has this team where it is close to competitive, the rabble will cease, but until then can expect the Daubach, Tinsley types to be paraded forth and yes.. Crapshot deals for more Evelands..

The AL East just became a little more difficult to play in.
