The Twins have designated Esmerling Vasquez for assignment, reports Joe Christensen of The Star Tribune. The move creates room on the 40-man roster for the recently claimed Darin Mastroianni.
Vasquez, 28, was claimed off waivers from the Diamondbacks back in September. He appeared in 31 games for Arizona last year, posting a 4.15 ERA with 5.9 K/9, 3.9 BB/9 and a 35.5% ground ball rate in 30 1/3 innings. The right-hander appeared in 50-plus games for the D'Backs in 2009 and 2010, when he posted higher strikeout rates, walk rates and ERAs than he did in 2011.

now the twins can get rid of matt maloney, jeff gray, jeff manship, and deolis guerra

Yes to Maloney and Gray, no to Manship (not yet) and Guerra.
Speaking of Guerra, sure, he’s been terrible as a SP, but once he converted to a reliever, he really improved last year.

I have no hard data to base this on, but as a Twins fan in Seattle, I saw Jeff Gray pitch a fair amount last season, and I think he’s worth giving a serious look to – epecially when you consider the Twinks likely wont contend this season. Throw a bunch of relievers at the wall, hope a few stick.

I was actually looking forward to seeing this guy come out of the bullpen in MN. He’s got more upside than just about anyone else the twins will run out there this year. I guess they’re just making sure they clear innings for Alex Burnett and his 5.00 ERA.
