Even as pitchers and catchers report for Spring Training, Roy Oswalt remains unsigned. Here’s the latest buzz on the 34-year-old, who’s undeniably the top free agent available…
- Royals GM Dayton Moore explained to Bob Dutton of the Kansas City Star that he has passed on available starting pitchers this offseason because he wants to see what his young pitchers can do at the Major League level. Moore said he doesn't think the Royals' offseason plan would have changed much if they had known from the start that Oswalt and Edwin Jackson would end up signing one-year deals.
- Rangers senior director of player development Tim Purpura said adding Oswalt to a pitching staff that already includes six starters wouldn't be easy, according to Bryan Dolgin of ESPNDallas.com.
- The Reds haven't been in touch with Oswalt's agents in the past week and GM Walt Jocketty thinks the right-hander is waiting for the Rangers to create room for him on their payroll.

It looks like the only team interested is the Red Sox.
blh2010
and he doesn’t want to go there
NickinIthaca
Didn’t someone say that regarding Cespedes and the Marlins last night?
James Hallow
With the Oswalt case, teams are saying they would have to move money. I’m pretty sure no teams can out and said they don’t want Cepedes.

No don’t count out Billy Beane! That guy is sneaky! Also please do not over look the pirates! Please do not!
Madman2TX
That’s a non-denial denial from the Rangers about trying to sign Oswalt. I still think it’s gonna happen somehow.
Brandon Smith
What would Texas do with him? I’d hate to see Harrison bumped to the pen. Oswalt won’t take a relief role at all. I think if the Rangers get rid of Uehara it will be to pick up Gonzalez. They need some bullpen work, not starter work.
Jdobb
Cardinals are waiting to get into camp to see how Wainwright and Carpenter are doing with heath. If they are hurting at all Cards will pick him up for 6 million for the season.
John Federspill
Detroit offered Oswalt $10 mill for one year and had Verlander call him, don’t know what he’s thinking
BoSoXaddict
He seems to be placing the MOST importance on geography. Pretty stupid if you ask me but I guess he has earned the right to prioritize teams in whatever way he wants..as long as he’s comfortable retiring if he can’t get his way
slider32
The fiasco in Boston’s front office has made players hesitant to go there.
BoSoXaddict
Like who?
TY
Other than Oswalt, who is this statement based on?
karkat
Does Oswalt just not want to pitch anymore? He has to know he’d be treated like a hero in Boston at this point, at least to start >_>
Maybe Lackey’s story has scared off viable pitchers from Boston. They’re afraid they’ll get the Lackey treatment if they don’t perform.
Stephen Coelho
He is trying to prove he is still what he once was, going to the AL East would make that much less likely. Plus Boston is pretty far away from his family. Still Boston is the only team with a spot for him and he can still play for a contender. He should sign now, before pitchers and catchers report.
crzycanuck
If he signs with Boston he better get a long-term deal cuz he’ll get killed in the AL east. It makes more sense for him to sign a 1yr deal within the NL central. He can put up better numbers than Marcum and thus drastically increase his chances at a huge payoff this time next year.
Crucisnh
It’s possible that Oswalt might get shelled in the AL East, and that could be a factor. I think that his apparent desire to stay closer to home in a more central location seems to be driving this. I get the feeling that he’d prefer to stay in the NL Central or alternatively the AL Central, but that that is limiting his options.
TY
My guess is that he will probably not get more than a 2-year deal with MAYBE an option year than can vest into a players option with a certain number of innings next offseason. There are more starting pitchers (as of now) that will look to be free agents and all are younger than him.
TY
Plus, if he does go to the AL East and pitches well it increases his stock moreso than going and having a good year in the NL Central would. Shows he can still be productive whereever he goes. Bigger risk, bigger reward.
This is all about geographic location and whoever thinks otherwise is delusional.
2001morecowbell2001
I agree with this. I think he’s earned his money and he wants convenience and proximity to home. I honestly think he’d rather retire or sit a year out than play elsewhere (aka Boston).
2001morecowbell2001
A hero now….maybe. But when he loses a game or two in a row armchair nation and the Boston media will cast him out like yesterdays garbage just like they do with all their “heroes”. If Ellsbury wasnt epic last year we’d still be hearing about how fragile of a coward he is and that he needs to be let go due to his injury marred season of 2010.
MUCHRIS64
Can’t believe Dayton is that stubborn not to take a look at Oswalt with his reduced price.
Also, I’m tired of our ownership looking cheap.
Lefty
Dayton is out of his MIND! The Orioles went with a young staff last year and look what happend. I have no idea what Duquette is doing FOR 2012. Anyway, Dayton is simply out of his MIND! Kudos to Dutton for at least asking.
PS Dayton is OUT OF HIS MIND! Unless Oswalt told him no, but he’s wasting the signing of Broxton. Royals need to get this done. Their offense is young, but I think they can go toe to toe with the Tigers even with the Prince signing.
MUCHRIS64
If Oswalt wont sign with KC that’s one thing, but his excuse just doesn’t ring true to me. Oswalt will NOT block anyone. The young pitchers still need to prove themselves in the minors first. Montgomery, for instance.
crzycanuck
That’s how many Jays fans feel up in Toronto.
BarrelMan
Would like to see Royals pick him up.
Although, c’mon Roy, just sign with the Brew Crew; it’ll be cool.
KenAndTonic
it’s guys like this that make me wish payroll wasn’t already pushed to the max. very reasonable price and would be an excellent fit
BarrelMan
For sure. With Oswalt on board the MIL rotation wld be nicely stacked. I guess spending money on any SP is excessive with their finances. Hope Narveson can keep it together.
Stephen Coelho
Royals would be smart to sign him, it would at the least generate some excitement. They have a pretty good roster this season and the AL Central is weak after Detroit.
MUCHRIS64
We’ve got the ASG this year so ticket sales will be up. The Royals can afford him easily.
BarrelMan
Oswalt wld seem to be a perfect addition and lead by example
MUCHRIS64
We signed injured Jonathan Broxton for 4 million but can’t go to 8 million or so for Roy freaking Oswalt? Ugh!!
BarrelMan
No doubt. Provided it would be an OK destination for picky Mr. Oswalt, it wld be a nice message to the KC faithful to sign him and say ‘hey, we’re gonna make some noise this year’.
BarrelMan
E-Jax wldve made some sense too on a 1-year deal
Bennie
The Rangers already have 6 starters who are as good or better than Oswalt. They don’t need another starter. Some act as if this was 2008 instead of 2012. The Rangers could only use him if he wanted to pitch out of the bullpen.
Lily
You wanted to be close to home, Roy? Well wishes are horses, cuz you get to be in your home, all summer, sitting on your butt, doing nothing.
JohnnyX77
SHOW ME how Jonathan Broxton is injured. don’t you think the Phils would give him a physical before signing him.
