The Brewers announced that they beat Jose Veras in yesterday's arbitration hearing. The right-hander will earn $2MM in 2012, instead of the $2.375MM his agent Bryce Dixon had requested.
Veras posted a 3.80 ERA with 10.0 K/9 and 4.3 BB/9 in 71 innings of relief for the 2011 Pirates. The 31-year-old will remain under team control through 2013. The Brewers have now signed all of their arbitration eligible players for 2012, as MLBTR's Arbitration Tracker shows. Jon Heyman of CBSSports.com first reported the news on Twitter.

Yet another positive to come from the Casey McGehee trade.

Check his splits. Jose Veras had terrible command in the 2nd half. So unless your team plans on reserving him for the 1st 3 months, he probably won’t be a good pitcher in september and october.
He’s a decent middle reliever, but not a great setup man.

We have K-rod… the $8MM setup man.

Doesn’t this seem like a small enough gap that it should have settled a while ago?

agreed… likewise, I’d have thought the Pirates and McGehee (and Garrett Jones) would have settled by now, but they haven’t

Saving $375,000 is like selling 10,000 tickets priced at $37.50. It all adds up.

I disagree sir, I think it’s more like selling 100,000 tickets at 3.75 each. 100,000 Brewer fans will buy way more beer. :p

It does seem like an arbitrary figure. ‘Fitzzzay’, your scenario works if they give 100K tix worth $3.75 each away to get people in the stadium spending $$$ on beer (which they will do). ‘daveineg’, your scenario works only if management is going to take the savings and give 10K tix worth $37.50 each to let people in. Now, you didn’t mention the take at the concessions, but that could be implied…whew…I think the Mel gave less thoughts on this one!!!
