Here's the latest from the AL East…
- Brian Cashman said there is still a chance Eric Chavez could return to the Yankees, reports ESPN New York's Andrew Marchand. Chavez could have the edge over other DH types like Johnny Damon and Hideki Matsui since Chavez can still play the field.
- Mike Axisa of the River Avenue Blues blog sees Dodgers outfielder Andre Ethier as an intriguing trade deadline possibility for the Yankees. Ethier would ideally be paired with Andruw Jones as a lefty-righty DH platoon.
- The Yankees still see Phil Hughes as a starting pitcher long-term and aren't likely to trade Hughes given that his trade value is "at a low point," writes MLB.com's Bryan Hoch. Last month for Roto Authority, I wrote that Hughes could be a nice dark horse fantasy option if he's healthy and able to win the No. 5 spot in New York's rotation.
- Orioles GM Dan Duquette tells MASNsports.com's Steve Melewski that he wants to get Adam Jones' 2012 salary settled before exploring a multiyear extension with the center fielder. "I've said several times that we like Adam Jones as a player and if we were to consider a long-term deal, that is something that we can certainly consider," Duquette said.
- Melewski also reports that Jones' arbitration case is set to be heard on February 17. The Orioles' other two outstanding arb cases (Jeremy Guthrie and Brad Bergesen) are scheduled for February 6 and 8, respectively.
- The Orioles are still looking for another bat, and it will probably have to come through the free agent market, reports Dan Connolly of the Baltimore Sun. The O's had "tepid interest" in Casey Kotchman but had already moved on before Kotchman agreed to terms with the Indians today.
- The Red Sox have hired veteran scout Gary Hughes as a special assistant to the club, reports Bob Nightengale of USA Today (via Twitter). Hughes has spent 45 years in a variety of different scouting and front office positions for numerous teams, including the last nine years as Jim Hendry's special assistant with the Cubs.
- The New York Times Co. has sold 100 shares of its ownership stake in Fenway Sports Group, which owns the Red Sox, reports MLB.com's Evan Drellich. The sale will net $30MM for the Times Co. Between this and a larger sale in July, the Times Co. is down to roughly a third of the 750 units it bought in Fenway Sports Group in 2002. Major League Baseball still has to approve the sale.

The Times should just buy more shares instead of selling. Or read the newspaper on how newspapers aren’t selling.
User 4245925809
Isn’t that a fact, or just write something believable that people will read instead of rubbish that the Times and it’s sister publications owned by them decide to print.. No wonder the Times just lost another 39m dollars.. Selling this 30m will recoup some of that.. Then I read the just fired CEO got a 21m dollar “booted out the door” bonus.. So I guess if you lead trash long enough you get paid well for it also.
Surprising there are not dolts “occupying” that house of lunacy.

Yankees hire Jim Hendry, we hire someone a little less awful…his assistant.

The O’s are looking for another bat, but aren’t willing to trade and waited way too long. Also they are sold on ::shudder:: Chris Davis at first.
Who does that leave? Manny, Damon, Vlad?
Lefty
Raul Ibanez can play first…. I am not sure if his play qualifies as well , but he can play first. He does have a smokin hot bat when he’s on, but when he’s cold, he is cold! Other than that I have no idea what Duquette has in store for Oriole fans.
As a side note Duquette has been been genuine about on thing, he plans to build through the draft and it looks like he’s keeping his word! If Guthrie is our opening day starter and therefore our #1, it looks like a lock as of right now. I guarantee that the O’s will have the #1 overall draft pick in 2013.
Bleed_Orange
I wish that we would just suck enough to grab that #1 pick. For some reason we are always just good enough to drop to no.3 or 4.
Jeff 30
To be fair there is (again) about 5 players who are head and shoulders above the rest in the upcoming draft. Some interesting HS arms, but my money is on Zunino.
Could also see the O’s having a lot of interest in Byron Buxton (HS outfielder)
Andrew Rickli
Apple is #1

And I wouldn’t want him, though I can definitely see why he’d go first.

Ethier as part of a platoon has to be one of the most ridiculous and genuinely insane suggestions I’ve ever read.
I think someone might not actually be too familiar with who Ethier is…
Jeff 30
Did you read the article? I’m gonna guess no.
hrbomber1113
I’m going to guess that person is YOU. I’ll repeat what I said before…What is Ethier good at?….hitting righties. What is Ethier TERRIBLE
at?….hitting lefties and playing defense. So what is the ideal way to
use someone who’s sole skill in the game of baseball is to hit right
handers well if it’s not the lefty 1/2 of a DH platoon? Just because the
MSM says someone is a superstar…..doesn’t mean they are. His name is
better than his actual production. And the Gold Glove he won only put
that award in the proper context. Derek Jeter wins GGs and Brett Gardner
can’t get one. What a joke. Que the Dodgers fans that “have seen him
play in person many times” and his defense is: A) Good B) Better than
people think or C) He catches everything he gets to.

Career:
Vs Righties: .386 wOBA, 139 wRC+
Vs Lefties: .292 wOBA, 77 wRC+
Hmmmmm….

Thinking that Ethier in a platoon as one of the most ridiculous and genuinely insane suggestions you’ve ever heard is pretty ridiculous in and of itself.
Too Many Idiots
Seven people who “liked” your comment aren’t familiar with Ethier, either.
Lefty
Well I am surprised the Mariners aren’t all over this.
Jack Z seems to dig positional players who can’t play their position. Ethier sounds like exactly what he is looking for in player. Offer the Dodgers the “King” Jack, offer the the “King” for Ethier! Kershaw and Felix in the same rotation and all they would need to do is trade Ethier. Now that would be a plan!
FS54 2
still Andre is better than just a platoon DH for freaking Yanks.
hrbomber1113
How? Explain to me why his career makes him need to be used in the field or against LHP. I’d love to hear it.
FS54 2
How is a GG winner bad defensively?
How many platoon DHs are there that accumulate 3+ WAR every season?
despite struggling against lefties, how many platoon DHs can hit more than 20 HR and drive in more than 75 runs almost every season?
His 162 game average, according to BBref, is still .290+ avg, 21 HR, 85 RBI, and 123 OPS+. All are pretty respectable numbers I believe.
Encarnacion's Parrot
How are gold gloves a good indication of anything?
FS54 2
I don’t think they are.
inleylandwetrust
First of all, gold gloves aren’t really a ringing endorsement. Not sure why people still think it is a relevant award.
Secondly, according to Fangraphs, Ethier has eclipsed 3 WAR exactly once in his career.
Lastly, yes he can slug against righties, but you are limiting your offense’s potential by starting him when southpaws are on the mound.
FS54 2
I was talking about offensive WAR from BBref.
GG winners may rob others who deserve the award but they are not terrible defenders themselves.
Yankees420
Jeter is a GG winner and is bad defensively…..so there’s that.
User 4245925809
None of them are relevant anymore.
All of them, including the writers HOF ballot have become nothing more than a popularity contest.
Yankees420
I know, I was attempting to say that just because Ethier won a GG does not mean he’s a capable defender, I thought making the Jeter comparison was clear, I don’t hold any stock in who wins a GG.
Too Many Idiots
He accomplished the majority of his offensive stats against right-handers. He’s shouldn’t be on the field vs lefties.
hrbomber1113
LOTS of GG winners are bad fielders. I guess you’ve never heard of the Palmeiro incident. RBI is 100% useless. Oh, and he doesn’t play 162 games so that is inflated and still not that good. And regardless of what his numbers look like at the end of the year, he can’t hit lefties. And giving those AB’s to someone who can maximizes your output. He still has broken the 3+ WAR mark on BBref. You can’t just disregard how awful he is in other aspects of the game. The guy just isn’t that good. He mashes righties. That’s it. That is the absolute definition of a platoon DH. A player who sucks at defense and can only hit opposite handed pitchers.

Is Gary Hughes the compensation for Theo?
