The Marlins designated right-hander Elih Villanueva for assignment to create 40-man roster space for Greg Dobbs, tweets Clark Spencer of the Miami Herald. The Marlins, who finalized their deal with Dobbs earlier today, still have a full 40-man roster.
Villanueva, 25, started one game for the Marlins last year, allowing eight earned runs in three innings. He spent most of the season at Triple-A New Orleans, where he posted a 5.35 ERA with 5.7 K/9 and 3.2 BB/9 in 165 innings. The Marlins selected Villanueva in the 27th round of the 2008 draft.

If I were the Pirates, I would stake claim.

this means he can be picked up by another team right?

I haven’t seen Elih pitch since he played for AA Jacksonville but he was real solid then. I remember reading that he has had to prove doubters wrong at every level so maybe he finally is overmatched at the big league level???

Yeah, but his Triple-A numbers weren’t impressive either. The only reason he was called up was for an emergency start, and Philadelphia rocked him.

It reminds me of that other guy who sucked in his first start. Horrible pitcher. He pitched 3 innings, gave up 5 runs and had a bloated 15.00 for an ERA. His name was Nolan Ryan. Good thing he didn’t pitch today because he would have been written off after his first appearance in the bigs.
