The Cubs have agreed to sign Alfredo Amezaga to a minor league deal, Ken Rosenthal of FOX Sports tweets. The Sparta Group represents the 33-year-old utility player.
Amezaga appeared in 40 games with the Rockies and Marlins in 2011, playing short, second, third and both outfield corners. He posted a .182/.247/.195 line in 87 plate appearances, but owns a career line of .247/.307/.333 in nine seasons with the Angels, Rockies, Pirates and Marlins. His most productive years came from 2006-08, when he posted a .675 OPS as a super utility player in Florida.

man this guy hasn’t had over 80 MLB at bats since 2008! Good thing it’s just a minor league deal

I don’t why I always think his name sounds like a vegetable…

If his best numbers were four years ago and consisted of a .675 OPS, I hope he likes Iowa.

At 33 Amezaga is looking pretty washed up. Can’t really see him providing anything meaningful besides AAA depth.

There goes that World Series drought!

I think it’s a good depth pickup. He could fill in nicely in the event of an injury or maybe even compete for a backup spot in Spring Training.

How come a washed up player is only seen as a mentor to the minor leaguers if he’s white?

What are you talking about?

With such an awesome name I can see why we need him. Other than that his stats appear pretty meh. But so are Rizzo’s ML #’s and he will be a bad mamajama in 2 years. I hope Al gets hot in Iowa. In short, I’d call it a fairly saucy addition.

meaningless signing he won’t make it out of ST. Then again if you hit .650 you’re not good enough to make the 25 man roster yet an .056 BA and .250 BA is good enough for back up and started. So Amezaga can hit .200 and make the team.
