6:56pm: The Red Sox have "made some progress" with Ross, a team source tells Pete Abraham of the Boston Globe (Twitter link).
4:33pm: It sounds like Ross will probably end up with the Red Sox, Adam Rubin of ESPNNewYork.com tweets. Rubin suggests the Mets didn't want to spend more than $1MM.
3:59pm: The Braves aren't among the finalists for Ross, David O'Brien of the Atlanta Journal Constitution tweets.
2:56pm: Free agent outfielder Cody Ross is expected to pick a team by the end of the day, Andrew Baggarly of the San Jose Mercury News tweets. The Red Sox are having an ongoing dialogue with Ross, ESPN.com’s Jerry Crasnick tweets.
The Mets also have some interest in the free agent outfielder, but the Red Sox can offer more money and a hitter-friendly home park, according to Baggarly. The Mets aren't sure Ross fits for them, so the Red Sox and others are more likely fits, Jon Heyman of CBSSports.com tweets.
Ross, 31, posted a .240/.325/.405 line with 14 home runs in 461 plate appearances for the Giants in 2011, while playing all three outfield positions. The SFX client has a career .282/.349/.563 line against left-handed pitching. Ross won the NLCS MVP in 2010, when he hit three homers against the Phillies. The Braves and Rockies have also been linked to Ross this winter.

AFCFAN06
hope its the braves on a 2 year deal he can play all OF spots would be a nice add
Brv Rocks
Ross would be a super nice fit for the Braves. I’m not sure what the FO is waiting on but they really need a back-up CF. This has been a dreadful offseason for the Braves.
NYBravosFan10
i wouldn’t say dreadful. Boring? Yes, but not dreadful. What else did we need besides a backup shortstop?
erm016
Exactly. It’s just been boring because so much has gone on in the NL East. We didn’t need anything except things we can’t change (Heyward slumping, Uggla slumping, injuries) with new players.
michael hughes
Personally, I would have liked to see Jurjjens traded. I’m very concerned about his injury history, his decline in velocity, and his ability to replicate last year’s performance. Our farm system needs a serious re-stocking when it comes to hitting prospects, and after 2012 we’ll likely have at least three big holes in the line-up at CF, SS, and 3B. If Prado does bounce back then we can assume he fills the hole at 3B but that just opens a new hole in LF, if he doesn’t bounce back you add LF to our needs along with 3B.
Don’t get me wrong, I don’t want to trade Jurjjens just to trade him, if the return isn’t strong then we need to take a chance on him. Also, all the reported trade opportunities were horrible and I’m glad we didn’t do them, but I would’ve liked to see something done.
NYBravosFan10
I’m assuming you aren’t a farm system/minor leagues specialist (nerd?) like me? We actually have some good talent at shortstop and 3rd in the minors. None are ready except Pastornicky but the wave is coming.
michael hughes
You assume incorrectly. I’m guessing you’re talking about salcedo and Andrelton Simmons? Salcedo put up extremely disappointing numbers this year and simmons looks to be a glove specialist. The biggest problem is a lack of depth as insurance if neither work out, which isn’t unlikely, neither are top 100 prospects and both have large flaws to their game.
NYBravosFan10
yes that is who I’m talking about. You could put Terdoslavich and Lipka in there as well.
Jeff 31
Isn’t Lipka a CF now? Terdo I got a feeling will end up a LF, or a AAAA player, but he has a chance.
If he can play 3B that’s a plus, but I’m not sold yet.
michael hughes
Yeah, Lipka got moved to CF mostly because they don’t have a single impact prospect at that position even though Bourn will be gone in 2013. Lipka’s still pretty far from the majors and probably won’t be ready by the time Bourn’s gone anyway.
YaGottaBelieve11
Boston can offer him a hitter friendly park, but the Mets will Be able to promise him playing time. Interesting choice, I hope it’s the Mets
chris_synan1
he will get playing time in RF…we don’t have anyone solid
Holidayjesus
I don’t see him going to the Red Sox unless they plan on panning out Clayton out.
GoAwayNow
valid point.
bravesdude
I’ll bet my left nut he doesn’t get signed by the Braves .
CaseyBlakeDeWitt
Chris Snyder accepts your proposal!
chris_synan1
I’ll take Cody Ross for cheap money…but the point of trading marco scutaro was to free up money to sign a SP…but then again the Sox haved signed many SP this offseason so still a possibility
Sully65
actually it was reported it was to free up money for a SP and an OF so this does make sense.
pcrammons04
If the Sox traded Scutaro just to be able to sign Ross…oh boy, I’ll have serious doubts about the Ben Cherrington era. Now…if they sign Ross and Oswalt….that works.
chris_synan1
ya agree…that’s the first thing i thought…lol….smh…but if we can sign Ross cheap…then we can just trade away Sweeney, Kalish,Nava etc who were competing for the RF job for some pitching or to free up cash to sign Oswalt
rainyperez
Love what he did for the San Francisco Giants by leading the way for their 1st World Series win out west.
But seriously!? We need a headline that says Cody Ross will be making a decision on what team he chooses? He’s not Albert Puljos or anything.
Then again I suppose it’s a better headline and rumor than, “Prince Fielder Eats a Vegetarian Jumbaco”
NYBravosFan10
I’ve been seeing this guy with a tomahawk on his jersey for 5 years now
NYBravosFan10
what else is there to talk about except the same ol’ junk with Fielder?

Stonehands
Sox have the most to offer, a 2/5 contract, and playing time while Crawford’s out, then RF is his with Sweeney as a platoon, then get Oswalt for 1/8 or Cherington going to have a handfull of grenades in his bedroom window…
Lefty
Cody, get the first flight that you can to Baltimore. Take the “Light Rail” to OPACY.March into the Warehouse and tell them “Lefty” sent you and demand a contract!See what happens!
KyleB
“Who the __ is Lefty?!?”
Lefty
Hahahaha! You’re probable right… still ..
TophersReds
He’s demanding to play in Baltimore because…? I think he would rather go to a team that wants him, just saying.
AmericanMovieFan
I think he deserves and should get 2 years/$9MM with a $1MM buy out and an option for $5MM. I have no clue who will signed him, but this is what I think he’s worth. A lot of people think he isn’t worth much but if you look at his overall numbers the last few years, comparable players get deals of an equivalent value.
obsessivegiantscompulsive
If the Mets want to collect the full set of the 2010 World Championship Giants OF, the Giants are willing to trade Pat Burrell, for one of their top position prospects. :^)
GoAwayNow
Pat Burrell is still in baseball?
icedrake523
Throw in Madison Bumgarner or Buster Posey and you got a deal.
NYBravosFan10
I like Dave O’Brien but he’s not always right
Larry Scapecchi
Dave O’Brien reported it as a direct quote from Cody Ross himself. Pretty sure he’s going to be right on this one.

Why in the hell would anyone want to go to the NY Mets? People are leaving that team as quick as they can.
DerekC
Playing time. If he’s not getting the 3-year deal that he previously wanted, he could take a one-year deal, play with some consistency and get the multi-year deal he wants next season. However, I’m not sure how much his stock can rise.
vtadave
Yeah the concept that Ross will play well enough to warrant a multi-year deal next offseason is a hard one to grasp.
alphakira
Mets let one guy go – internet: “NO ONE WANTS TO BE THERE! EVERYONE IS LEAVING!!!!!!11!”
And I don’t exactly see anyone running to play for the playoff-less Braves…
chris_synan1
I’m gonna be angry if the only reason they traded scutaro was so they could sign Ross
Leonard Washington
Even with Crawford missing a little time to begin the season I think we should just give the two spots to a combo of McDonald/Lin/Sweeny. We don’t really need that expensive of a platoon partner for Sweeny. Lin is a patient bat and has got a nice arm and D in center field so I think he could def handle any OF spot. Just split McDonald/Lin between left field and right field when its a lefty. Then when Carl is back we can keep the best of the two on as our platoon/4th OF guy. Offense is gonna be deadly either way so sign Oswalt already so we can be done.
Angry Disgruntled Sox Fan
Anyone is better than Darnell McDonald.
Leonard Washington
I’ll grant you he is not a great player, but off the bench he isn’t that bad in stretches.
chris_synan1
Wow im suprised teams are going that low…1mm maybe the Sox can get a better deal than I though..well i guess Ross is our new full time RF
nats2012
$1 million?
nats2012
What were the Mets trying to get him at if they didnt want to go over $1 million?
alphakira
…I’m take a wild guess in assuming $1 million.
Angry Disgruntled Sox Fan
The Red Sox freed money so that they could sign Cody Ross? Pathetic.
vtadave
yep, that’s what they did.
Sigh….
Tko11
Are you a Red Sox fan?? Just wondering haha. PWNdroia as a name can go either way. But yeah if they don’t get Oswalt trading Scutaro to sign Ross is pretty bad…
Angry Disgruntled Sox Fan
I am a Sox fan more or less.
Tko11
Now tomorrow watch the Red Sox receive Marlon Byrd as compensation for Theo…this team is looking like a mess right now.
nats2012
It feels like the Mets are Ebay shopping. They wont do a Buy It Now, they’re looking for a good bid.
MetsMagic
I think you’ve made your point. I think it’s more like Peapod than anything else, except they’re offering the players groceries and not vice versa. That’s how they’re paying Mo Vaughn.

BillB325
So Red Sox fans who would you guys give up for Garza after the compensation has been settled? Or maybe the compensation could be the Cubs paying most of his contract.
BoSoXaddict
Taking the compensation in to account, I would be OK with the Sox offering something like Ranaudo/Doubront/some other prospect. I would say Iglesias is probably untouchable now with our shortstop situation and I’m not sure the Sox would be willing to part with two of Ranaudo/Middlebrooks/Lavaranway in any deal. Maybe if it was Ranaudo/Lavaranway for Garza/compensation..or perhaps they could get Byrd involved too.
BillB325
I might be reaching on this but if a deal like Garza, Barney(the comp), Byrd and cash for Lavarnway, Middlebrooks, Ranuado, and Owens be fair?
MaineSox
Owens can’t be traded yet, and I wouldn’t want the Sox to make that trade.
drjayphd
I’d let the Cubs assume the responsibility for paying Carl Crawford and John Lackey. Oh, I wouldn’t TRADE either player to Chicago. I’d say that in exchange for Garza, the Cubs get the privilege and honor of cutting the checks to Crawford and Lackey. They’ll still suit up for the Bosox, of course.
Lefty
I am scratching my head here. While Cody Ross can play all outfield positions, he doesn’t have the Arm to play right field, I am assuming that where’s they (Red Sox) are going to play him. Also, the Red Sox hurt their defense up the middle by trading Scutaro to clear payroll for Ross. Usually, not a good idea. Is Cherington drunk? As for my Orioles, they haven’t really done anything this offseason except provide a lot propaganda to the fans. It’s looking more and more I am off to the Cactus League for the 2012 Spring Training. I really need to know how the other side lives! Because, it ain’t happening in Sarasota this year!
phee17
i can’t find the espn special on this…

I bet Doc Halladay is hoping and praying that Ross signs with the Red Sox so he won’t have to face Ross 50 times this season
Phillies_Aces35
Why, because of one game?
I think Roy Halladay would gladly face Cody Ross, excluding the post season, he’s 3-16 off him.
hoagiebuchanan
No, it’s gotta be his lifetime .723 OPS against the Phils!
ChiefTomahawk
Would have been a really nice signing for the Braves, but we do have Diaz off the bench again so I’m not sure how useful Ross would be.
