A few notes to share coming out of the American League East …
- An arbitration hearing appears likely for the Red Sox and David Ortiz, according to Jon Paul Morosi of FOXSports.com. When the sides exchanged salary proposals earlier this month, the Red Sox offered $12.65MM, while Ortiz and his representatives at SFX request $16.5MM, so a pretty sizable gap exists. The 36-year-old DH posted a sharp .309/.398/.554 line and slugged 29 homers in 2011.
- The Korean Baseball Organization is displeased by the Orioles' signing of 17-year-old lefty Seong-Min Kim to a minor league deal because of his age and is threatening to petition Major League Baseball, according to Eduardo A. Encina of the Baltimore Sun. Orioles GM Dan Duquette said he doesn't understand the complaint, as Kim and his family were both in favor of the move, and he is closer to 18 than to 17.
- Rays third baseman Evan Longoria said during an appearance on MLB Network's Intentional Talk that he has no regrets about the club-friendly extension he signed in April 2008, according to Marc Topkin of the St. Petersburg Times. "I can honestly say that I’ve never regretted doing it. I can look at myself in the mirror and say that I made the right decision. You never know, who knows, one or two years in I might’ve hurt myself and not been the player that I am today." The six-year deal includes three club options for what would have been free-agent years for Longoria. It could be worth as much as $45MM and will expire after Longo's age-29 season.
With regards to Longo, I think if you like the organization, and can make $45MM then it’s a good deal. That’s plenty to live on, and you get piece of mind and security.
Also, did everyone see Jim Bowden’s trade proposals on ESPN?
Not to mention he’ll still only be 29 when his deal runs out if all those options are exercised. If the stingy Rays think it’s worth paying him $15m/year, he should be able to land a 100m+ deal when he’s 29 no problem.
Blah, Stingy just isn’t the word I would use to describe it.
that won’t happen though.
What was it?
1. AZ trades Parra to DET for Andy Dirks, Don Kelly, Andy Oliver
2. TEX trades Martin Perez to MIN for Span
3. LAA trades Trumbo to TB for Davis
4. NYY trade Betances and Austin Romine to LAD for Ethier
5. STL trades Shelby Miller, Jon Jay, Zack Cox to BAL for Jones
Lmao at that Texas trade. Texas is gonna trade a top prospect in their system and in all of baseball for SPAN? No way.
you better watch your back or SPANdemonium will respond to you…

I’ll take the STL trade for Jones. Where do I sign.

I’ll take the STL trade for Jones. Good for both teams.
Its not good for St. Louis. Very lopsided.

That Seong-Min Kim named looked way too familiar, so I looked it up.
Crazy, the A’s signed a guy with the same name, only difference being that he’s a catcher….that definitely threw me off a little
Hopefully the Rays decide to draft a replacement if Longoria leaves, or they lock him up with an extension. Mike Moustakas from the Royals looks like a long term solution if Evan decides to chase the money. The Rays could ship Shields or Upton to KC, however the Royals value him very highly.
Not sure Upton is a viable piece to them, perhaps Shields.
Longo is under contract (including option years) through 2016, at which point Moustakas will be 28 and in his prime, and Shields and Upton will no longer be on the Rays. So…I don’t think the Rays will be trading Shields or Upton for Moustakas, and I don’t think the Royals are really looking to trade one of their franchise cornerstones.
I honestly believe Longo will be a Ray for life. After the 2016 option, the Rays can and will spend 5/90 for a franchise player. Even if their payroll must increase.
I think Longo looks for atleast a 6+ year deal
I think Longo looks for atleast a 6+ year deal
Longo will be out of that contract just in time to score another big deal so there is no reason to worry on his part. Waaaaaaawaaaaa Korean league waaaaawaaaaaa, who cares? I think that about covers it.
Those Koreans are mad
Does Papi think he’s going to see an offer anywhere near $12 mil on the open market?
I bet he gets more than $12 mil in arbitration.
does he ever get tested for p.e.d.?
You don’t seem to understand how arbitration works, Papi isn’t on the open market and he is guaranteed at least 12.65MM for 2012.
Somebody ask Dan Duquette to explain how a 17-year-old is closer to 18 than 17.
what if he is 17? it’s not like mlb teams haven’t signed 15 year olds from dominican republic.
btw, the mlb should raise the age of latin american prospects when they are signed so that they don’t have to resort to the identity thefts.
Even if the singing age were 18, you’d have 21 and 22 year olds trying to pass themselves off as 18. I agree that the age should be raised though; the whole MLB system in the DR is very exploitative and gives rise to very unsavory businessmen.

Well, he turns 18 in April, which means that right now he is over 17 and a half (17 yrs, 9 months), making him closer to 18 then he is 17.
But…he’s 17. I mean, I don’t have a problem with them signing him, but it’s kind of silly to say that a 17-year-old is closer to any age other than his own.
so you’d have problems with the ladies kinda taking some numbers off their real ages.
I’m smart enough to not tell “the ladies” what to do, but not smart enough to know what your comment has to do with this thread.
Time doesn’t actually freeze for a year on your birthday.
17 doesn’t magically become 18 because Dan Duquette says so.
You forgot what you said earlier?
Would it have made you happier if he had rephrased it to “He’s closer to his 18th birthday than to his 17th?”
semantics people
In mathematics anything greater than or equal to 17.5 is increased to 18 when rounding.
For some reason “In mathematics” made me laugh.
And here I thought no one would get my sarcasm.
Everyone has very serious and important things to say. It would be a shame if someone didn’t realize how important this issue of rounding was to be honest
He’s a Korean, not a mathematic.
All Koreans are mathematicians. Just ask anyone who’s ever said a joke about Asians.
What has the KBL so upset? It’s not like Japan where they would make money off the signing. My only concern about signing a young Korean is the required military service time.
They don’t like young KBO prospects leaving to go to MLB.
Loyalty is a big deal in S. Korea, and players are typically encouraged to stay in the country and play for a team there.
I wish more Players were like Longoria, just wants to play the game to play the game and win, money isn’t his major motivation…………..Refreshing.
By taking less money Longo becomes a more likeable person, but it’s still one of the worst contracts. He should have done what Lincecum did, he would be making 20 million by now. He can rake! Same for Moore.
I agree..and as somebody posted above, the less he takes in payroll the more they can spend on having quality people around him.If he takes up too much he ends up all alone..I also still love Jeff Weavers comments after his “Team Friendly” deal..”If I can’t find a way to live off 85M then I’m not very smart”
Wrong Weaver, though Pujols did accidentally call Jered “Jeff” at the press conference.

its a problem because he hasnt graduated high school, Duquette took him without permission of the KBO and the high school team.
Took him? He didn’t kidnap the guy.
Took him? He didn’t kidnap the guy.
Evan Longoria is the man, how much money does one person really need?
Were this the Yanks, everyone would be singing a different tune, methinks, but the “lowly” O’s? They must have taken him in the middle of the night at gunpoint, right? NOT!! Let us not pretend that no one has ever signed a 17 yr old (almost 18, lol) before, ok?
Go O’s!
